Intraspecific biodiversity and 'spoilage potential' of Brettanomyces bruxellensis in Apulian wines

Abstract The yeast Brettanomyces bruxellensis, generally considered the main oenological spoilage microbe, is able to survive during the winemaking process and it confers off-odors to wine, in reason of its ability to produce considerable amounts of volatile phenols. Forty-eight isolates of B. bruxellensis, obtained from several wines collected in Apulia (Southern Italy), were genetically characterized using an integrated approach, including a strain biodiversity analysis by Sau-PCR. Resolution of the ATLAS muon spectrometer monitored drift tubes in LHC Run 2

The momentum measurement capability of the ATLAS muon spectrometer relies fundamentally on the intrinsic single-hit spatial resolution of the monitored drift tube precision tracking chambers. Optimal resolution is achieved with a dedicated calibration program that addresses the specific operating conditions of the 354 000 high-pressure drift tubes in the spectrometer. The calibrations consist of a set of timing offsets and drift time to drift distance transfer relations, and result in chamber resolution functions. Optimal passive-damping design using a decentralized velocity-feedback H-infinity approach

In this work, a new strategy to design passive energy dissipation systems for vibration control of large structures is presented. The method is based on the equivalence between passive damping systems and fully decentralized static velocity-feedback controllers. This equivalence allows to take advantage of recent developments in static output-feedback control design to formulate the passive-damping design as a single optimization problem with Linear Matrix Inequality constraints. To illustrate the application of the proposed methodology, a passive damping system is designed for the seismic protection of a five-story building with excellent results. Peer Reviewed

Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje rozważania wstępne autorki związane z planowaną rozprawą habilitacyjną, której celem jest zrekonstruowanie historii polskiego przekładu powieści Der Zauberberg (Czarodziejska góra) Thomasa Manna oraz zanalizowanie jego oddziaływania na polską recepcję utworu. Ze względu na fakt, że obie części powieści zostały przełożone przez różnych tłumaczy, a tom drugi doczekał się dwóch wersji przekładu (z roku 1930 oraz z 1953), powstaje przy tym fundamentalne pytanie o spójność wyłaniającego się z przekładu światopoglądu dzieła. X-ray Spectroscopy of (Ba,Sr,La)(Fe,Zn,Y)O3-δIdentifies Structural and Electronic Features Favoring Proton Uptake

Mixed protonic–electronic conducting oxides are key functional materials for protonic ceramic fuel cells. Here, (Ba,Sr,La)(Fe,Zn,Y)O3−δ perovskites are comprehensively investigated by X-ray spectroscopy (in oxidized and reduced states). Extended X-ray absorption fine structure shows that Zn,Y doping strongly increases the tendency for Fe–O–Fe buckling. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy at the Fe K-edge and X-ray Raman scattering at the O K edge demonstrate that both iron and oxygen states are involved when the samples are oxidized, and for the Zn,Y doped materials, the hole transfer from iron to oxygen is less pronounced. Portable instrumentation is largely used in archaeometry for in-field measurements at museums and archaeological sites. The historic evolution of pigments is closely related to the technology developments in past cultures and provides relevant clues regarding their knowledge advancement. Here, a systematic study of 26 historical powdered pigments was carried out through a combined handheld instrumentation for X-ray Fluorescence.
