A central role for Notch in effector CD8(+) T cell differentiation.

2014

Activated CD8(+) T cells choose between terminal effector cell (TEC) or memory precursor cell (MPC) fates. We found that the signaling receptor Notch controls this 'choice'. Notch promoted the differentiation of immediately protective TECs and was correspondingly required for the clearance of acute infection with influenza virus. Notch activated a major portion of the TEC-specific gene-expression program and suppressed the MPC-specific program. Expression of Notch was induced on naive CD8(+) T cells by inflammatory mediators and interleukin 2 (IL-2) via pathways dependent on the metabolic checkpoint kinase mTOR and the transcription factor T-bet. These pathways were subsequently amplified d…

Core–Shell Nanorod Columnar Array Combined with Gold Nanoplate–Nanosphere Assemblies Enable Powerful In Situ SERS Detection of Bacteria

2016

Development of a label-free ultrasensitive nanosensor for detection of bacteria is presented. Sensitive assay for Gram-positive bacteria was achieved via electrostatic attraction-guided plasmonic bifacial superstructure/bacteria/columnar array assembled in one step. Dynamic optical hotspots were formed in the hybridized nanoassembly under wet-dry critical state amplifying efficiently the weak vibrational modes of three representative food-borne Gram-positive bacteria, that is, Staphylococcus xylosus, Listeria monocytogenes, and Enterococcus faecium. These three bacteria with highly analogous Raman spectra can be effectively differentiated through droplet wet-dry critical SERS approach combi…

InN thin film lattice dynamics by grazing incidence inelastic x-ray scattering.

2011

Achieving comprehensive information on thin film lattice dynamics so far has eluded well established spectroscopic techniques. We demonstrate here the novel application of grazing incidence inelastic x-ray scattering combined with ab initio calculations to determine the complete elastic stiffness tensor, the acoustic and low-energy optic phonon dispersion relations of thin wurtzite indium nitride films. Indium nitride is an especially relevant example, due to the technological interest for optoelectronic and solar cell applications in combination with other group III nitrides.

Discrimination of non-infectious SARS-CoV-2 particles from fomites by viability RT-qPCR.

2021

The ongoing coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic constitutes a concerning global threat to public health and economy. In the midst of this pandemic scenario, the role of environment-to-human COVID-19 spread is still a matter of debate because mixed results have been reported concerning SARS-CoV-2 stability on high-touch surfaces in real-life scenarios. Up to now, no alternative and accessible procedures for cell culture have been applied to evaluate SARS-CoV-2 infectivity on fomites. Several strategies based on viral capsid integrity have latterly been developed using viability markers to selectively remove false-positive qPCR signals resulting from free nucleic acids and damaged viruses. T…

PCOS and infertility. Metformin administration and ovulation induction in patients with reproductive failures. Preliminary data

2014

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of the metformin administration in patients with previous reproductive failures. Inclusion criteria: 13 patients with chronic anovulation and PCOS, age < 38 years old, sterility not less than 2 years, C.C. resistance, conception failure in previous cycles with only r-FSH and negativity to the multiple miscarriages tests, absence of others infertility factors. Metformin administration started 2 months before the ovulation induction. Alternatively a spontaneous menstruation it was induced by progestin. Ovulation was performed with r-FSH and patients were invited to have sexual intercourse during the 48h after the HCG trigger. Luteal support …
