“Ageism” Is Associated With Self-Reported Multidimensional Frailty in Community-Dwelling Older Subjects: A Population-Based Study
2022
Ageism is a stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination against people, based on age. Ageism may impact the quality of life and the care of older people, a problem that can be greater when the older person is “frail.” However, few studies explored the role of frailty as a factor related to ageism. The aim of this study was to assess the association between perceived age discrimination (PAD), i.e., ageism, and multidimensional frailty in a cohort of community-dwelling older adults. We enrolled 1,337 community-dwelling subjects over-65 years that filled out a structured questionnaire to collect psycho-socio-economic and behavioral information. Multidimensional frailty was assessed by the SELFY…

A time series study on the effects of heat on mortality and evaluation of heterogeneity into European and Eastern-Southern Mediterranean cities: resu…
2013
Background: The Mediterranean region is particularly vulnerable to the effect of summer temperature. Within the CIRCE project this time-series study aims to quantify for the first time the effect of summer temperature in Eastern-Southern Mediterranean cities and compared it with European cities around the Mediterranean basin, evaluating city characteristics that explain between-city heterogeneity. Methods: The city-specific effect of maximum apparent temperature (Tappmax) was assessed by Generalized Estimation Equations, assuming a linear threshold model. Then, city-specific estimates were included in a random effect meta-regression analysis to investigate the effect modification by several…

Skewed Differentiation of Circulating Vγ9Vδ2 T Lymphocytes in Melanoma and Impact on Clinical Outcome
2016
OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to evaluate over time circulating γδ T lymphocytes in melanoma patients in terms of frequency, effector functions, and relationship with clinical stage and evolution, by comparing preoperative values to those obtained at a mean follow-up of 36 months or in the event of recurrence or disease progression, and to those of healthy controls. Also, we correlated the presence of tumor-infiltrating γδ T lymphocytes with clinical evolution of melanoma. RESULTS:Mean frequencies of circulating γδ T cells before and after melanoma removal were very similar and comparable to healthy subjects, but patients who progressed to stage III or IV showed a significantly decrea…
Willingness to pay for a cure of low-risk melanoma patients in Germany
2018
Malignant melanoma is potentially life-threatening but in most cases curable if detected early. Willingness to pay (WTP) is a preference-based construct that reflects burden of disease by assessment of the monetary value for a hypothetical cure from disease. Since WTP (directly as total amount of money) has not been assessed so far in patients with low risk melanoma, it was interesting to gain insights in this patient population and then, in a second step, compare it directly with the WTP of their treating dermato-oncologists. WTP was assessed in 125 patients with low-risk melanoma and additionally in 105 treating physicians, asking for the one-time and continuous payments they would be wil…
Przyjaciele Boga (gnostycy) – współdziałającymi w trudzie nabywania cnoty. Przyczynek do aretologii Klemensa Aleksandryjskiego

Acquiring virtue, understood as a well-ordered personality, is connected with a considerable toil, as follows from the writings of Clement from Alexandria. Its source is to be ascribed, first of all, to the necessity of being true to God’s commandments, but also to overcoming discouragement caused by: the long-lasting process of its acquiring, the conviction of impossibility to achieve it, undertaking yet again the ceased “moral cultivation” or other appropriate actions not infrequently given up under the influence of the opinion of the environment. Therefore, the one who acquires virtue, is supported by a gnostic, a perfect Christian, filled with concern for others, who, thanks to his acqu…

The care of people with disability represents a primary objective related to the duties of assistance that the Constitution provides as tasks of the Republic and stated also by rules of international and European nature. Among the measures the system predisposes for the protection of disability, those tools are placed directed to let the civilian invalids’ families with a serious handicap to take care of them in case of need. Among these measures are particularly relevant the ones related to the approval for the family of disabled persons to rest from work aimed to protect the mental and physical health but also to the social integration of these subjects. The specificity of the military em…
Clinico-biological characteristics of patients with myelofibrosis: an analysis of 1,000 cases from the Spanish Registry of Myelofibrosis
2020
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE MYELOFIBROSIS: is an infrequent chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm. We aimed to describe the clinico-biological characteristics, treatment, and evolutive course of myelofibrosis patients in Spain.; MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 1,000 patients from the Spanish Registry of Myelofibrosis diagnosed with primary (n=641) or secondary (n=359) myelofibrosis were analysed.; RESULTS: Median age was 68 years. The frequency of constitutional symptoms, moderate to severe anaemia (Hb<10g/dL), and symptomatic splenomegaly was 35%, 36%, and 17%, respectively. The rate of thrombosis and haemorrhage was 1.96 and 1.6 events per 100 patient-years, respectively. The cumulative incid…
