Psychomotor, Psychosocial and Reading Skills in Children with Amblyopia and the Effect of Different Treatments

2020

Amblyopia influences psychomotor and psychosocial skills, although not all studies are unanimous. Different treatments coexist, but the effect on those variables is not clear. This study aims to probe whether children with amblyopia have impairments in these areas and if different optometric treatments reduce them effectively. 50 children, diagnosed with amblyopia, and 33 without amblyopia participated in this study. Eye-hand coordination, psychosocial skills and reading abilities, were measured before and after three months of different treatments (patch, patch and near vision activities and perceptual learning). Results revealed lower scores in eye-hand coordination and some reading issue…

Do trained assessors generalize their knowledge to new stimuli?

2005

Previous work showed that trained assessors are better at discriminating and describing familiar chemico-sensorial stimuli than novices. In this study, we evaluated whether this superiority holds true for new stimuli. We first trained a group of subjects to characterize beer flavors over a two year period. After training was accomplished, we compared the performance of these trained assessors with the performance of novice subjects for discrimination and matching tasks. The tasks were performed using both well-learned and new beers. Trained assessors outperformed novices in the discrimination task for learned beers but not for new beers. But on the matching task, trained assessors outperfor…

Passive sound exposure induces rapid perceptual learning in musicians: event-related potential evidence.

2013

Musicians show enhanced auditory processing compared to nonmusicians. However, the neural basis underlying the effects of musical training on rapid plasticity in auditory processing has not been systematically studied. Here, the rapid (one session) learning-related plastic changes in event-related potential (ERP) responses for pitch and duration deviants between passive blocks were compared between musicians and nonmusicians. Passive blocks were interleaved with an active discrimination task. In addition to musicians having faster and stronger overall source activation for deviating sounds, source analysis revealed rapid plastic changes in the left and right temporal and left frontal source…

Auditory perceptual learning : evidence from electrophysiological recordings in rodents and humans

2018

Yllättävät muutokset äänimaailmassa viestittävät yleensä selviytymisen kannalta tärkeistä vihjeistä, joten niiden nopea ja automaattinen havaitseminen on tärkeää. Tietoinen harjoittelu mahdollistaa havainto-oppimisen ja oppimisen seurauksena hermostoon muodostuu uusia muistijälkiä. Varhaisessa kehityksessä herkkyyskauden aikana muistijälkien muodostuminen, ihmisellä erityisesti puheäänille, on automaattista, eikä siihen vaadita tietoista harjoittelua.

Around the world in four senses : a teaching material package for a high school culture course

2012

Kulttuuri vaiku…

Kształcenie umiejętności efektywnego słuchania na lekcjach języka polskiego

2015

The aim of this article is to verify the way in which authors of school textbooks propose develop listening comprehension in Polish language lessons. The author, after discussing the specifics of listening within an interpersonal communication and detailed perceptual skills, sets objectives of improving the auditory reception in Polish language education. Subsequently, she presents an analysis of didactic tasks that are classified according to a perceptual skill which are being developed. The article finishes with the presentation of a model of developing listening comprehension that emerges from selected school textbooks.

Music Training Enhances Rapid Neural Plasticity of N1 and P2 Source Activation for Unattended Sounds

2012

Neurocognitive studies have demonstrated that long-term music training enhances the processing of unattended sounds. It is not clear, however, whether music training also modulates rapid (within tens of minutes) neural plasticity for sound encoding. To study this phenomenon, we examined whether adult musicians display enhanced rapid neural plasticity compared to non-musicians. More specifically, we compared the modulation of P1, N1, and P2 responses to standard sounds between four unattended passive blocks. Among the standard sounds, infrequently presented deviant sounds were presented (the so-called oddball paradigm). In the middle of the experiment (after two blocks), an active task was p…

Tapology: A Game-Based Platform to Facilitate E-Health and E-Inclusion

2014

Published version of a chapter in the book: Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction. Aging and Assistive Environments. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-07446-7_36 We have developed a tablet computer game app for low vision users that can be used to introduce a platform for gaming, internet and visual rehabilitation to older users who have not had prior experience with information communication technology (ICT). Our target user group is people diagnosed with Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The primary goal of the app is to present a fun and engaging means for participants to engage with Information Communication Technology (ICT). A long…

Learning styles meet classroom activities

2010
