Managing Persistent Hypoxemia: what is new?

Mechanical ventilation is the standard life-support technique for patients with severe acute respiratory failure. However, some patients develop persistent and refractory hypoxemia because their lungs are so severely damaged that they are unable to respond to the application of high inspired oxygen concentration and high levels of positive end-expiratory pressure. In this article, we review current knowledge on managing persistent hypoxemia in patients with injured lungs.

Maternal homework assistance and children's task-persistent behavior in elementary school

The present study used a sample of 365 children to investigate the longitudinal associations between maternal homework assistance (i.e., help, monitoring, and autonomy granting) and children's task-persistent behavior in learning situations from grade 2 to grade 4 of elementary school. Also, the extent to which task-persistent behavior plays a role in the links between parental homework assistance and children's academic performance was examined. The results showed that the more autonomy granting mothers reported, the more task-persistent behavior children exhibited; and more task-persistent behavior children exhibited, the more autonomy their mothers granted. BACKGROUND: Symptomatic severe osteoarthritis and hip osteoporotic fractures are the main conditions requiring total hip arthroplasty (THA), whereas total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is mainly performed for pain, disability or deformity due to osteoarthritis. A NEW INDEX OF POVERTY PERSISTENCE

This paper proposes a new indicator of poverty persistence based on a synthesis of the temporal sequences of the years spent in poverty and non poverty, taking into account the order in which poverty spells follow each other. The index is a measure with cardinal properties and it allows not only the ranking of the individuals according to the duration of their poverty experience but also to measure the distance between any two individuals in the population. The index can be built up at individual level and it is also possible to have an aggregated index at any territorial level. Micro data from a longitudinal survey are needed.

This paper describes the architecture and a partial implementation of a system designed for the monitoring and analysis of communities at social media sites. The main contribution of the paper is a novel system architecture that facilitates long-term monitoring of diverse social networks existing and emerging at various social media sites.
