Tithonia oxfordiana, a new irregular echinoid associated with Jurassic seep deposits in south-east France

2011

The infaunal irregular echinoid, Tithonia oxfordiana, is described and compared to congeneric species previously described from Upper Jurassic and lowermost Cretaceous strata. This new species characterizes a monospecific echinoid assemblage, which occurs only in some places where deep-marine middle Oxfordian deposits are exposed in south-east France. Specimens are closely packed and clearly concentrated at the top of small carbonate chemoherms; a close connection of the echinoids with the emission of reduced chemicals, which were oxidized by chemoautotrophic bacteria, is highly probable. Based on general test shape and plate architecture, T. oxfordiana probably was a deposit feeder on chem…

Anton Čechov, Il giardino dei ciliegi

2023

Anton Chekhov wrote his last play, Višnëvyj sad (The Cherry Orchard), at the dawn of the twentieth century. From Yalta on 22 April 1901 he sent a letter to the Moscow Art Theater’s actress Olga Knipper, whom he would marry within a year, telling her that he was tempted to write a four acts vaudeville or a comedy, and would have been able to send it to the Art Theatre «not before the end of 1903». So it was. And so it takes shape for the scene The Cherry Orchard; Chekhov managed to create «a spider's web» with which he captured the attention and the mind of the spectators of the first opening of the play in 1904, as well as of every subsequent re-run on all the stages of the world. The Cherr…

Maternal inconsistent socialization: An interactional pattern with maltreated children

1995

Most child abuse episodes take place in the context of child-rearing conflicts. Parents show a lack of competence in appropriately solving these conflicts, producing an escalating phenomenon which eventually ends in verbal and/or physical aggression towards the child. The main purpose of this study is to test the role of inconsistent socialization in the development of prolonged dyadic coercive exchanges. Observational information from 15 mother-child dyads referred for psychological treatment for abuse and 15 non-clinical dyads was obtained at home. Results show the mother's indiscriminate attention following prosocial child behaviour was significantly higher in abusive dyads, while disrup…

Child-centered and teacher-directed practices in relation to calculation and word problem solving skills

2019

Abstract This study examined transactional associations between classroom-level math skills and teaching practices. Participants were 523 children from 31 classrooms. Math skills were assessed three times. Teaching practices were observed in Grades 1 and 3. Child-centered practices promoted subsequent calculation skills whereas teacher-directed practices were associated with a lower level of calculation skills. Higher problem-solving skills at Grade 2 predicted more child-centered practices and less teacher-directed practices in third grade. Moreover, calculation skills mediated the effect of child-centered practices on problem-solving skills. The results suggest that teaching practices and…

DEVELOPING EMOTIONAL COMPETENCE: A PSYCHO-EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTION BASED ON STORYTELLING AND DRAMA WITHIN A KINDERGARTEN

2019

A number of studies shows the role of emotions in psycho-educational processes during childhood, as well as the importance of emotional variables in social interactions in school context. One of the major contributions to emotional domains in childhood is the model of Emotional Competence (EC) developed by Saarni. EC, which includes one's self, one's moral disposition, and one's developmental history, is crucial to children’s ability to interact and form relationships with others, and develops from 3 to 6 years of age. In Italy, there is a growing interest towards affective education in schools. However, it is rather difficult toidentify common operationalization and intervention protocols.…

A Validation Methodology for a Combined Heating Cooling and Power (CHCP) Pilot Plant

2004

A great number of variables significantly influence the energetic, environmental and economic results of CHP (Combined Heating and Power) and CHCP (Combined Heating Cooling and Power) plants operation, and as a consequence their project activity is rather complex. In order to select the best layout and properly size the machines, detailed data on hourly electric, thermal, and cooling demand are necessary, so that a series of plant life cycle simulations may have to be carried out. Unfortunately, such detailed data are rarely available, because energy consumptions data for existing buildings are usually derived from aggregated monthly or bimonthly gas and electricity bills. Even more difficu…

Bimodal tracers synthesis for medical imaging PET/MRI

2015

Today physicians can use a wide variety of medical imaging techniques to establish early and accurate diagnosis. Nevertheless, each modality has its own advantages and drawbacks. This is why bi- or multimodality approach seems interesting. Among them, PET/MRI combination seems very promising because it can bring complementary informations. It is therefore necessary to inject to patients tracers specific to each imaging modality. This work described the synthesis of molecular platforms for MRI and PET imaging, according to 2 different strategies. The first one consisted in the synthesis of a DO3A macrocycle allowing the chelation of both gadolinium for MRI and gallium 68 for PET. The aim her…

Russian concept of the Eurasian Aerospace Defense System. Analysis of the problem

2018

The author of the article describes the most important theses of A. Podberezkin plan against the geopolitical Russia background which form a paradigm of a common security in Russian terms on a strategic area of Eurasia. It is of a particular significance in view of the growing threats to modern world. Especially of hazardous nature is current problem of North Korea in connection with nuclear testing carried out by unpredictable regime of Kim Jong-un which creates the risk that sudden conflict can drag the whole Peninsula into a war. This, in turn, would lead to the US intervention there. Effects of the possible conflict involving superpower are hard to predict. Another current problem is Mo…

Exploring bilingual ideology and identity of EMI medical teachers and students in China’s mainland

2022

This qualitative research in-progress investigates the bilingual ideology and identity of EMI (English-medium-instruction) teachers and students at a Chinese medical university that aims to enrich the understanding of bi/multilingualism in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context from domestic stakeholders’ perspectives. The researcher conducted a series of semi-structured interviews with Chinese medical content teachers and students throughout an academic term. Supplementary research materials include written materials, such as lecturers’ PowerPoint slides and institutional documents. The preliminary findings suggest that the teachers and students present diverse ideological stances…

Project-based learning in the Chinese heritage language course/class in Finnish comprehensive education

2023

With the trend of global mobility and immigration, the Finnish government has been promoting integration and multiculturality since 1990. According to the Finnish National Agency for Education (FNAE), Heritage Language (oma äidinkieli) lessons aim to protect and develop immigrant students’ competencies in their heritage languages and cultures. This article shares a pilot 4-week PBL (Project-based Learning) module for a group of advanced Chinese language learners. It discusses the opportunities and challenges during the PBL and suggests possible improvements. nonPeerReviewed
