Generation of Bessel beam arrays through Dammann gratings.

2012

In this work we apply the Dammann grating concept to generate an equal-intensity square array of Bessel quasi-free diffraction beams that diverge from a common center. We generate a binary phase mask that combines the axicon phase with the phase of a Dammann grating. The procedure can be extended to include vortex spiral phases that generate an array of optical pipes. Experimental results are provided by means of a twisted nematic liquid crystal display operating as a binary π phase spatial light modulator.

Liquid crystal spatial light modulator with very large phase modulation operating in high harmonic orders.

2013

Unusually large phase modulation in a commercial liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LCSLM) is reported. Such a situation is obtained by illuminating with visible light a device designed to operate in the infrared range. The phase modulation range reaches 6π radians in the red region of the visible spectrum and 10π radians in the blue region. Excellent diffraction efficiency in high harmonic orders is demonstrated despite a concomitant and non-negligible Fabry–Perot interference effect. This type of SLM opens the possibility to implement diffractive elements with reduced chromatic dispersion or chromatic control.

Joint transform correlator with spatial code division multiplexing.

2006

A joint transform correlator may suffer from overlapping of the zero diffraction order of the output, which does not contain relevant information, and the correlation peaks that appear in the first diffraction orders if objects are not sufficiently separated. Such overlapping significantly reduces the signal-to-noise ratio of the identification process. We propose a novel approach based on code division multiplexing technique in which the contrast of the identification peaks is significantly enhanced. The approach does not include placing the two objects side by side but rather includes code multiplexing them. Moreover, the code division multiplexing technique allows the space-bandwidth pro…

The temporal analogue of diffractive couplers

2020

International audience; Based on the space-time duality of light, we numerically demonstrate that temporal dispersion grating couplers can generate from a single pulse an array of replicas of equal amplitude. The phase-only profile of the temporal grating is optimized by a genetic algorithm that takes into account the optoelectronic bandwidth limitations of the setup.

Applications of sinusoidal phase modulation in temporal optics to highlight some properties of the Fourier transform

2019

International audience; Fourier analysis plays a major role in the analysis and understanding of many phenomena in physics and contemporary engineering. However, students, who have often discovered this notion through numerical tools, do not necessarily understand all the richness that can be derived from joint analysis in the temporal and spectral domains, particularly in the field of optics. As part of the second year of the Master's degree in Physics Lasers and Materials at the University of Burgundy, we have set up a set of experiments to highlight these concepts and to show, on a non-trivial example of periodic phase modulation, the precautions to be taken in the interpretation of the …

Fiber-based device for the detection of low-intensity fluctuations of ultrashort pulses

2012

International audience; We describe a fiber-based device that can significantly enhance the low intensity fluctuations of an ultrashort pulse train to detect them more easily than with usual direct detection systems. Taking advantage of the Raman intrapulse effect that progressively shifts the central frequency of a femtosecond pulse propagating in an anomalous dispersion fiber, a subsequent spectral filtering can efficiently increase the level of fluctuations by more than one order of magnitude. We show that attention has to be paid to maintain the shape of the statistical distribution unaffected by the nonlinear process.

Pulse trains produced by phase-modulation of ultrashort optical pulses: tailoring and characterization

2009

1094-4087; In this paper, creation of pulse doublets and pulse trains by spectral phase modulation of ultrashort optical pulses is investigated. Pulse doublets with specific features are generated through step-like and triangular spectral phase modulation, whereas sequences of pulses with controllable delay and amplitude are produced via sinusoidal phase modulations. A temporal analysis of this type of tailored pulses is exposed and a complete characterization with the SPIDER technique (Spectral Phase Interferometry for Direct Electric-field Reconstruction) is presented. Towards CEP stable, single-cycle pulse compression with bulk material

2010

We demonstrate both experimentally and numerically that self-steepening during propagation in a hollow-fiber followed by linear propagation through glass in the anomalous dispersion enables pulse compression down to 1.6 cycles at 1.8 µm wavelength.

All-fibered high-quality low duty-cycle 20-GHz and 40-GHz picosecond pulse sources

2007

International audience; In this work, we demonstrate all-fibered 20-GHz and 40-GHz picosecond pulse sources with duty cycles as low as 1/14. The pulse train is achieved via the high-quality compression of an initial sinusoidal beating through four segments of optical fibers. General design rules are proposed and experimental results are in agreement with numerical predictions.

All-fiber spectral compression of picosecond pulses at telecommunication wavelength enhanced by amplitude shaping

2012

International audience; We demonstrate efficient spectral compression of picosecond pulses in an all-fiber configuration at telecommunication wavelengths. A spectral compression by a factor 12 is achieved. Performing temporal shaping with a parabolic pulse significantly improves the spectral compression with much lower substructures and an enhanced Strehl ratio.
