Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate of possibility of biotransformation and toxicity effect of monoanthraquinone dyes in cultures of Bjerkandera adusta CCBAS 930. Phenolic compounds, free radicals, phytotoxicity (Lepidium sativum L.), ecotoxicity (Vibrio fischeri) and cytotoxicity effect were evaluated to determine the toxicity of anthraquinone dyes before and after the treatment with B. adusta CCBAS 930. Excretion and metabolism of phenol, 4-nitrophenol and 2-methylphenol by the frogs Rana temporaria and Xenopus laevis.

1. Rana and Xenopus excrete 90-95% dose, and metabolize 50-65% dose of phenol, 4-nitrophenol and 2-methylphenol within 24 h, to about the same extent. 2. Kinetic data for the excretion of phenols from both species fit a two-compartment model. The elimination constants of Rana and Xenopus are not significantly different. 3. Metabolism is mostly conjugation by glucuronidation and sulphation of the original phenols. Acute toxicity of several chlorinated phenolic compounds detected in waste waters of bleached pulp was determined forSelenastrum capricornutum and indigenous phytoplankton using bioassays. Five of the phenolic compounds were chlorocatechols, four were chloroguaiacols and one was chlorosyringol. The response ofSelenastrum capricornutum to chemicals was measured by cell counting and phytoplankton14C-uptake. Histochemical and biochemical investigations concerning the function of larval oenocytes of Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera, Insecta).

Larval oenocytes of Tenebrio molitor were investigated histochemically. In contrast to the lipid droplets of the fat body, they did not stain with Sudan black. A positive reaction for lipoproteins appeared only after destructive oxidation with sodium hypochlorite. These lipoproteins are the remnants of degenerated membranes, as revealed by ultrastructural analysis. Polyphenols could be identified in the exocuticle of exuvia, and in the newly formed procuticle. Endocuticle, epidermis and oenocytes showed no staining reaction. In oenocytes a great amount of lipase is also present which could be detected with several Tweens as substrates. Pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) for the green recovery of bioactive compounds and steviol glycosides from Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni leaves

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni leaves are a natural source of diterpenic glycosides, and various bioactive compounds. The objectives were to characterize antioxidants and steviol glycosides in the extracts obtained from Stevia after "green" pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE). PHWE extracts were obtained at different temperatures (100, 130, 160 °C); static extraction times (5 and 10 min), and cycle numbers (1, 2, 3) using a constant pressure of 10.34 MPa.
