Influence of the drying processes of yeasts on their volatile phenol sorption capacity in model wine.

2009

International audience; Volatile phenols, such as 4-ethylphenol, are responsible for a "horsey" smell in wine. Thus, the study of volatile phenol sorption in yeasts, and their subsequent elimination from wine, helps to optimize eco-friendly wine curative processes. Here, we compared the influences of spray drying, lyophilization and evaporative drying at low water activity on yeast, for improving the 4-ethylphenol sorption capacity in a synthetic model wine. The changes that occur in the physico-chemical characteristics of the yeast surface (surface hydrophobicity, electron-donor character and zeta potential) during these drying processes were determined to assess if any correlation exists …

Arginine clustering on calix[4]arene macrocycles for improved cell penetration and DNA delivery

2013

Cell-penetrating peptides are widely used as molecular transporters for the internalization inside cells of various cargo, including proteins and nucleic acids. A special role is played by arginine-rich peptides and oligoarginines covalently linked or simply mixed with the cargo. Here we report cell-penetrating agents in which arginine units are clustered on a macrocyclic scaffold. Instead of using long peptides, four single arginine units were covalently attached to either the upper or lower rim of a calix[4]arene, kept in the cone conformation building a ‘parallel’ cyclic array. These new macrocyclic carriers show high efficiency in DNA delivery and transfection in a variety of cell lines.

Solid-state NMR and computational studies of tetratolyl urea calix[4]arene inclusion compounds.

2009

Solid-state guest dynamics of tetratolyl tetraurea calix[4]arene tetrapentylether dimeric capsules filled with different types of aromatic guests such as benzene-d6, fluorobenzene-d5 and 1,4-difluorobenzene were studied. Upon inclusion, all guest moieties revealed complexation-induced shifts varying from 2.8 ppm to 5.1 ppm. All guest molecules were shown to undergo distinct motions, ranging from mere C6-rotations of benzene-d6 to (ill-defined) 180 degrees phenyl flips of fluorobenzene-d5. In all cases, dynamic heterogeneities were identified based on 2H lineshape deconvolution. In addition, by combination of both a computed nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) map and explicit 19F and …

Guest exchange in dimeric capsules formed by tetra-urea calix[4]arenes

2008

Ten tetra-urea calix[4]arene derivatives with different ether residues (methyl, pentyl, benzyl, all combinations of methyl and pentyl, 1,3-dibenzyl-2,4-dipentyl), including also the tetrahydroxy compound and the 1,3-dipentyl ether, were synthesised. Their urea groups were substituted with a lipophilic residue to ensure sufficient solubility in cyclohexane. Thus, kinetics for the exchange of the included guest (benzene) against the solvent (cyclohexane) could be followed by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The apparent first order rate constants decrease with increasing size of the ether residues from methyl to benzyl by more than three orders of magnitude. This can be understood by a decreasing flexibi…

Enhanced thermodynamic and kinetic stability of calix[4]arene dimers locked in the cone conformation.

2004

Wide rim tetraurea derivatives (2a,b) have been prepared from a calix[4]arene rigidified in the cone conformation by two diethyleneglycol ether bridges between adjacent oxygens. In comparison to the analogous tetraurea derivatives (3a,b) of a tetrapentoxy calix[4]arene, 2a,b show an increased thermodynamic stability in mixtures of CDCl(3) and DMSO-d(6). Their kinetic stability as expressed by the rate of guest exchange (benzene or cyclohexane against the solvent benzene-d(6)) is also strongly increased by factors of 30-38. Noticeable differences for the inclusion of selected guests are found.

Guest exchange in dimeric capsules of a tetraurea calix[4]arene in the solid state

2007

A solid powder of hydrogen bonded dimers of a tetraurea calix[4]arene is able to exchange the encapsulated guest in contact with the vapor of a second guest. The molecules of a guest-free powder obtained from a polar solvent cannot rearrange in the solid phase to form new guest-filled capsules under these conditions.

New prenylhydroquinone glycosides from Phagnalon rupestre.

2001

Three new hydroquinone glycosides were isolated from the MeOH extract of the aerial parts of Phagnalon rupestre. Their structures were elucidated as 1-O-beta-glucopyranosyl-1,4-dihydroxy-2-(3',3'-dimethylallyl)benzene (1), 1-O-beta-glucopyranosyl-1,4-dihydroxy-2-(3'-hydroxymethyl-3'-methylallyl)benzene (2), and 1-O-(4' '-O-caffeoyl)-beta-glucopyranosyl-1,4-dihydroxy-2-(3',3'-dimethylallyl)benzene (3) by spectroscopic methods.

Obesogen effects after perinatal exposure of 4,4′-sulfonyldiphenol (Bisphenol S) in C57BL/6 mice

2016

International audience; Bisphenol A were removed from consumer products and replaced by chemical substitutes such as Bisphenol S (BPS). Based on their structural similarity, BPS may be obesogen like Bisphenol A in mice. Our objective was to determine the impact of BPS on lipid homeostasis in C57B1/6 mice after perinatal and chronic exposure. Pregnant mice were exposed to BPS via the drinking water (0.2; 1.5; 50 mu g/kg bw/d). Treatment began at gestational day 0 and continued in offspring up to 23-weeks old. Then, offspring mice were fed with a standard or high fat diet. The body weight, food consumption, fat mass and energy expenditure were measured. A lipid load test was performed to chec…

Ex Vivo Treatment with a Polyphenol-Enriched Cocoa Extract Ameliorates Myocardial Infarct and Postischemic Mitochondrial Injury in Normotensive and H…

2016

Our objective was to determine the effects of a polyphenol-enriched cocoa extract (PCE) on myocardial postischemic alterations in normotensive (Wistar rats, W) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Isolated hearts were submitted to 110 min of perfusion or 20 min stabilization, 30 min global ischemia, and 60 min reperfusion (R). Other hearts were treated with PCE at the onset of R. Infarct size, the reduced glutathione (GSH), and the expression of phospho-Akt, P-GSK-3β, and P-eNOS were assessed. In isolated mitochondria, the Ca2+-mediated response of mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP), membrane potential (δψm), and superoxide production were determined. PCE decreased infa…

Polyphenol intake and cardiovascular risk factors in a population with type 2 diabetes: The TOSCA.IT study

2017

Background: The role of polyphenol intake on cardiovascular risk factors is little explored, particularly in people with diabetes. Aim: To evaluate the association between the intake of total polyphenols and polyphenol classes with the major cardiovascular risk factors in a population with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Dietary habits were investigated in 2573 males and females participants of the TOSCA.IT study. The European Prospective Investigation on Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) questionnaire was used to assess dietary habits. In all participants, among others, we assessed anthropometry, plasma lipids, blood pressure, C-reactive protein and HbA1c following a standard protocol. The USDA and Ph…
