Abstract BM-21 is an extract obtained from Thalassia testudinum marine plant with pharmacological properties. The effects of BM-21 and thalassiolin B (TB), its main component, on enzyme and transport proteins involved in drug metabolism and excretion in human cultured hepatocytes were evaluated. Cells were exposed for 48 h to sub-cytotoxic concentrations of BM-21 or TB. Effects on P450 isoforms revealed significant reductions of CYP1A2, 3A4 and 2D6 activities (up to 56%, 66% and 44% inhibition, respectively) after exposition to BM-21, no changes on CYP2A6 and 2C9 activities. Effect of storage on quality parameters and phenolic content of Italian extra-virgin olive oils

The quality of extra virgin olive oils is affected mainly by hydrolytic and oxidative reactions. The present paper investigated the changes of major and minor components and oxidation indices of three monovarietal extra virgin olive oils after 18 months of storage at room temperature and in dark glass bottles conditions. After storage, the basic quality parameters such as free acidity, peroxide values, extinction coefficients, fatty acids composition, chlorophyll and carotenoid content, did not exceed the upper limits set by European Community Regulations for extra-virgin olive oils. Photolysis of (E)- and (Z)-2-(1-ethyl-3-phenylpropenyl)phenol (1 and 2) under a variety of conditions produces a mixture of dihydrobenzopyrans 3 and 4, dihydrobenzofuran 5, cyclopropanes 6 and 7, and rearranged olefin 8. Acidic treatment of 1 and 2 gives a mixture of the six-membered ring products 3 and 4. Remarkable differences, associated with the nature of the precursor and the reaction conditions, are observed in the regiochemistry of cyclization and in the stereochemistry of the dihydrobenzopyrans (3/4 ratio). This points in favour of an H-bridged intermediate, rather than a fully zwitterionic species, as the direct precursor of the photocyclized products.

Phenolic profiles of olive mill wastewaters treated by membrane filtration systems

BACKGROUND Olive mill wastewater is an important by-product obtained after olive oil extraction. In this investigation, the phenolic composition of olive mill wastewater treated with a semi-industrial membrane filtration system, including ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis modules, was studied. In particular, untreated olive mill wastewater was compared with the permeate and the concentrate fractions of each filtration step. RESULTS 3,4-(dihydroxyphenyl) ethanol and p-(hydroxyphenyl) ethanol were the main compounds of all olive mill wastewater analyzed. Occupational exposure to endocrine disruptors and lymphoma risk in a multi-centric European study

Background: Incidence rates of lymphoma are usually higher in men than in women, and oestrogens may protect against lymphoma. Methods: We evaluated occupational exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) among 2457 controls and 2178 incident lymphoma cases and subtypes from the European Epilymph study. Results: Over 30 years of exposure to EDCs compared to no exposure was associated with a 24% increased risk of mature B-cell neoplasms (P-trend=0.02). Associations were observed among men, but not women. Conclusions: Prolonged occupational exposure to endocrine disruptors seems to be moderately associated with some lymphoma subtypes. © 2015 Cancer Research UK. All rights reserved.

The Bronsted aids: The first dehydrogenative arylation of β-keto esters with arenes under ambient aerobic conditions is described. Under a Pd(II)/Bronsted acid co-catalytic system, regioselective arylations with alkoxylated arenes and phenols were achieved in good yields, even in gram-scale conditions.

Boron functionalization of BODIPY by various alcohols and phenols.

The synthesis of new B–O BODIPY derivatives functionalized with different alkoxy or diarylalkoxy derivatives is described. These compounds were synthesized from the reaction of different B–F BODIPY precursors with various alcohols and phenols, in the presence of AlCl3. Water-soluble dyes could be synthesized as well with this method, specifically by the introduction of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) groups. A photophysical study of the different compounds was performed, and showed that the B–O BODIPY derivatives exhibit rich fluorescence properties. Leaves from Olea europaea represent one of the main by-products of the olive oil industry, containing a plethora of bioactive compounds with several promising activities for human health. An organic solvent-free extraction method was developed for the recovery of olive leaf phenols, which obtained an extract containing oleuropein in high amounts.
