SEM and XPS studies of titanium dioxide thin films grown by MOCVD

1998

Abstract The metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) method was used to prepare titanium dioxide thin films. Thin films of TiO2, about 100 nm thick, were deposited on (100)Si and (1102)Al2O3 sapphire substrates using titanium isopropoxide (Ti(OC3H7)4) as metal organic precursor. The morphology of the films and the presence of impurities on the thin films surfaces were studied using respectively, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The influence of the growth parameters such as the deposition temperature, the carrier gas (nitrogen) flow rate and the presence of an additional oxygen flow on the characteristics of the titanium dioxide films h…

Selective hydrogenation of nitroderivatives over Au/TiO2/UVM-7 composite catalyst

2020

Abstract Hydrogenation of nitroderivatives (4-nitrostyrene or 7-nitro-1-tetralone) was performed using as support a silica mesoporous material with high specific surface area (1091 m2/g) and a bimodal pore size distribution (UVM-7). Gold and/or TiO2 were deposited inside the pores of this support with the aim to achieve high activity and selectivity for this reaction. The morphology and structure of the powders have been characterized by adsorption-desorption isotherms, XRD, TEM, STEM-HAADF, XPS and ATR-FTIR. Structural characterizations shown differences between the catalysts with and without titania. The presence of TiO2 provides a better size distribution of the spherical gold nanopartic…

N-TiO2 Photocatalysts highly active under visible irradiation for NOX abatement and 2-propanol oxidation

2013

N-doped TiO2 powders were prepared by two different sol-gel methods. Samples were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET specific surface area measurements (SSA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). XPS measurements revealed a signal at 400 eV assignable to nitrogen in the form of Ti-N-O. EPR signals are attributed to molecular NO trapped with cavities/defects possibly interacting with oxygen vacancies. The photocatalytic activity under UV and visible light was determined following the abatement of NOx and the photodegradation of 2-propanol in gas-solid systems. N…

Graphene oxide-silica nanohybrids as fillers for PA6 based nanocomposites

2014

Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by oxidation of graphite flakes by a mixture of H2SO4/H3PO4 and KMnO4 based on Marcano's method. Two different masterbatches containing GO (33.3%) and polyamide-6 (PA6) (66.7%) were prepared both via solvent casting in formic acid and by melt mixing in a mini-extruder (Haake). The two masterbatches were then used to prepare PA6-based nanocomposites with a content of 2% in GO. For comparison, a nanocomposite by direct mixing of PA6 and GO (2%) and PA6/graphite nanocomposites were prepared, too. The oxidation of graphite into GO was assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Micro-Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrosco…

In-situ study of multi-phase indium nanoparticle growth on/into CuPcF4 organic thin film in ultra-high vacuum conditions

2021

Abstract We study the in-situ growth of a nanocomposite material consisting of a thin CuPcF4 film and multiphase/multidimensional indium nanoparticles, self-organizing on the surface and in the bulk, at various stages of thermal deposition of metal on an organic film under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The analysis of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) images provided valuable information about the evolution of morphology, size, density, and distribution of indium nanoparticles upon indium deposition. These 2D/3D ultra-small nano-objects turned out to have not only body-centered tetragonal (bct) crystal structure, typical for bulk indium, but also unusual face-centered…

Thermal stability of Au–TiO2 nanocomposite films prepared by direct liquid injection CVD

2015

Abstract Nanocomposite films composed of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) embedded in a TiO 2 matrix have been prepared by direct liquid injection chemical vapor deposition process, using preformed nanoparticles and titanium isopropoxide as precursors. The spherical AuNPs about 4.1 nm in diameter were synthesized by using gold (III) chloride trihydrate and stabilized by thiol ligands. The depositions were carried out by performing at first oxide deposition, then gold nanoparticle one and capping with oxide. The morphology, structure; the chemical state and optical properties of nanocomposite films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman, X-ray photoelectron and UV–Vis absorption…

Spectroscopic and Theoretical Study of the Grafting Modes of Phosphonic Acids on ZnO Nanorods

2013

Metal oxides are versatile substrates for the design of a wide range of SAM-based organic-inorganic materials among which ZnO nanostructures modified with phosphonic SAM are promising semiconducting systems for applications in technological fields such as biosensing, photonics, and field-effect transistors (FET). Despite previous studies reported on various successful grafting approaches, issues regarding preferred anchoring modes of phosphonic acids and the role of a second reactive group (i.e., a carboxylic group) are still a matter of controversial interpretations. This paper reports on an experimental and theoretical study on the functionalization of ZnO nanorods with monofunctional alk…

Template Electrochemical Growth and Properties of Mo Oxide Nanostructures

2014

This work is aimed at studying the growing process of nanostructures electrodeposited from molybdate aqueous solutions at different pH values into pores of polycarbonate membrane templates. The challenging issue was the opportunity to investigate a rather complex deposition process in a confined ambient, where electrochemical conditions are quite different from those usually established for deposition on a flat substrate. Nanostructures were grown from a bath containing Mo7O246– (NH4)6Mo7O24·4H2O) at different concentrations (50–100 g/L), at a constant cathodic current density of 2 mA/cm2 (electrodeposition area ∼8 cm2). Nanostructured deposit was characterized by XRD, EDS, Raman, XPS, and …

Cell and tissue response to nanotextured Ti6Al4V and Zr implants using high-speed femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures

2019

In this paper, the effect of femtosecond laser nanotexturing of surfaces of Ti6Al4V and Zr implants on their biological compatibility is presented and discussed. Highly regular and homogeneous nanostructures with sub-micrometer period were imprinted on implant surfaces. Surfaces were morphologically and chemically investigated by SEM and XPS. HDFa cell lines were used for toxicity and cell viability tests, and subcutaneous implantation was applied to characterize tissue response. HDFa proliferation and in vivo experiments evidenced the strong influence of the surface topography compared to the effect of the surface elemental composition (metal or alloy). The effect of protein adsorption fro…

Atomic scale surface modification of TiO2 3D nano-arrays: plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition of NiO for photocatalysis

2021

Here we report the development of a new scalable and transferable plasma assisted atomic layer deposition (PEALD) process for the production of uniform, conformal and pinhole free NiO with sub-nanometre control on a commercial ALD reactor. In this work we use the readily available nickel precursor nickelocene in conjunction with O2 plasma as a co-reagent (100 W) over a temperature range of 75–325 °C. An optimised growth per cycle of 0.036 nm was obtained at 250 °C with uniform thickness and coverage on scale-up to and including an 6 inch Si wafer (with a 200 nm thermal SiO2 top layer). The bulk characteristics of the NiO thin films were comprehensively interrogated by PXRD, Raman spectrosco…
