Some Critical Remarks on the Suitability of the Concept of the Photosynthetic Unit in Photosynthesis Research and Phytoplankton Ecology

Based on the classical definition of the photosynthetic unit after Emerson and Arnold, new definitions are presented and their consistency subjected to critical reflection. Modern molecular approaches to determine the physiological condition or even the efficiency of the photosynthetic machinery via determination of the magnitude of the photosynthetic unit are discussed against the background of new data on the dynamics of the thylakoid membrane.

Photosynthesis and transpiration of healthy and diseased spruce trees in the course of three vegetation periods

CO2- and H2O-gas exchange of 20- to 25-year-old spruce trees from a plantation in the Hunsruck mountains were investigated over a period of 3 years. All measurements were made as pair comparisons, i.e., in each case the gas exchange of a damaged tree and of a relatively healthy tree in its immediate vicinity was measured simultaneously. A second plantation in the Westerwald mountains consisted of 18-year-old apparently healthy spruce trees. Pair comparison at this location meant comparison of two healthylooking trees. Spatio-temporal distribution and growth dynamics of phototrophic sulfur bacteria populations in the sulfide-rich Lake Arcas

Lake Arcas exhibits a thermal stratification from April to October. A sulfide-rich anoxic hypolimnion is then formed between the deeper part of the thermocline and the lake bottom, and high population densities of phototrophic microorganisms are found at the oxic-anoxic interface. Chromatium weissei, a large rod, 8 × 4 μm in size, was the dominant phototrophic bacterium, reaching densities of up to 1.84 × 106 cells ml-1. Other phototrophic sulfur bacteria, such as Amoebobacter cf. purpureus, Thiocapsa sp., and Pelodictyon clathratiforme were also present in the anoxic hypolimnion, but their cell size and population densities were much lower. The impact of winter flooding with saline water on foliar carbon uptake and the volatile fraction of leaves and fruits of lemon (Citrus limon) trees

We investigated the consequences of recurrent winter flooding with saline water on a lemon (Citrus × limon (L.) Burm.f.) orchard, focussing on photosynthesis limitations and emission of secondary metabolites (isoprenoids) from leaves and fruits. Measurements were carried out immediately after flooding (December), at the end of winter (April) and after a dry summer in which plants were irrigated with optimal quality water (September). Photosynthesis was negatively affected by flooding. The effect was still visible at the end of winter, whereas the photosynthetic rate was fully recovered after summer, indicating an unexpected resilience capacity of flooded plants. C supply during seed filling depends mostly on current photosynthesis, but N assimilation and N$_2$ fixation decline during seed filling, with newly acquired N generally insufficient for the high seed demand. As seeds are strong sinks for mobilised nutrients, seed growth becomes metabolically closely associated with N remobilisation. Recently, the Satellite Application Facility for Land Surface Analysis (LSA-SAF) has just released a new product that helps to characterize ecosystem processes, the 10-day LSA SAF GPP product from SEVIRI/MSG data (MGPP LSA-411). The GPP product is based on Monteith's concept, which models GPP as the product of the incoming photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), the fractional absorption of that flux $(\mathrm{f}_{APAR})$ and a light-use efficiency factor $(\varepsilon)$. Photosensitivity of SiO2–Al and SiO2–Na glasses under ArF (193 nm) laser

Abstract Photosensitivity of SiO 2 –Al and SiO 2 –Na glass samples was probed by means of the induced optical absorption and luminescence as well as by electron spin-resonance (ESR) after irradiation with excimer-laser photons (ArF, 193 nm). Permanent visible darkening in the case of SiO 2 –Al and transient, life time about one hour, visible darkening in the case of SiO 2 –Na was found under irradiation at 290 K. No darkening was observed at 80 K for either kind of material. This investigation is dedicated to revealing the electronic processes responsible for photosensitivity at 290 and 80 K.
