Predictors of school students’ leisure-time physical activity : An extended trans-contextual model using Bayesian path analysis

2021

Abstract Background:The trans-contextual model (TCM) has been applied to identify the determinants of leisure-time physical activity participation in secondary school students. In the current study, the TCM was extended to include additional constructs that represent non-conscious, implicit processes that lead to leisure-time physical activity participation alongside the motivational and social cognition constructs from the TCM. The current study used baseline and follow-up data from an intervention study to test the extended TCM.Methods:The current study adopted a two-wave prospective design. Secondary-school students (N = 502) completed measures of perceived autonomy support from physical…

The effect of physical education students' beliefs and values on their physical activity: A growth mixture modelling approach

2013

This study examined the change in adolescents' expectancy-related beliefs and task values towards physical education (PE). In addition, the physical activity (PA) growth trajectories of the identified adolescent subpopulations were examined. This study comprised 812 students (age M = 12.31, range: 11–13), who answered questionnaires four times during Grades 6–9. This study found that expectancy-related beliefs declined, while task values increased across the middle school transition. Adolescents who valued PE highly and experienced an increase in their expectancy-related beliefs became physically more active across time, while adolescents with the lowest levels and the most negative change …

The individual zones of optimal functioning (IZOF) model (1978–2014): Historical overview of its development and use

2015

The individual zones of optimal functioning (IZOF) model is a sport-specific framework that describes the relationship between emotional experiences and relative success in sporting tasks on the basis of individual rather than group-based patterns. Initially developed by the psychologist Juri Hanin in the 1970s, the number of published studies using the model has since significantly grown and diversified. In an effort to create a comprehensive database of IZOF research and reviews, a literature search was conducted using several databases and existing reference lists. This analysis yielded a total of 183 IZOF-based publications (from 380 compiled). The list of publications was subdivided in…

Relationships among perceived motivational climate, motivational regulations, enjoyment, and PA participation among Finnish physical education studen…

2015

The influence of teacher-initiated motivational climate on cognitive, affective, and behavioural student outcomes has been highlighted as an area of future research. This study, grounded in self-determination and achievement goal theories, examined how teacher-initiated motivational climate can increase student motivation and positive affective responses in physical education (PE) along with their physical activity (PA) participation, and whether motivational climate has a longitudinal effect across middle school. In addition, we aimed to examine the role of positive affect in explaining the relationship between motivation in PE and out-of-school PA participation. Our sample comprised 540 a…

Cambios en la representación social de la educación física en la formación inicial del profesorado (Changes in the social representation of physical …

2018

Socio-ecological analysis of trans people’s participation in physical activity and sport

2019

The purpose of this study is to explore and provide understanding of trans people’s participation in physical activity and sport through the socio-ecological perspective. A total of 43 Spanish trans people (21 trans women, 17 trans men and 5 with ‘other self-identifications’), between 15 and 62 years old, participated in semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis identified six main themes, which highlight the multidimensional relations between individual, social and environmental factors in trans people’s participation in physical activity and sport. Results reveal that the importance of body appearance for ‘passing’ and the fear of being unmasked affect their participation. Trans peop…

When Physical Activity Participation Promotes Inactivity

2010

This article analyses negative experiences in physical education and sport reported during qualitative interviews of a group of inactive adolescent Spanish boys and girls. The purpose of this analysis is twofold. First and most important, it seeks to give voice to these young people reporting negative experiences and connect them to contexts of physical activity and sport in which they occurred in order to show how, ironically, inactivity is an unintended consequence. Second, the authors attempt to connect inactivity through negative experiences by drawing on conceptual notions of a gendered performativity culture, and symbolic violence. The authors conclude by commenting on how these insi…

Pour une écriture universitaire polymorphe : la transcription de héros ordinaires en héros de bande dessinée

2018

During a workshop dedicated to adapting academic articles in comic form, the authors teamed up to produce four pages based on an article written by Sebastien Laffage-Cosnier, which was published in Society and Leisure (Volume 38, 2015 – Issue 3) ntitled “The French Snow Class: How the Focus of a School Innovation Changed from Physical Education to Academic Learning (1953–1981)”. The drawings on the following pages are the result of this common work, the process of which is described by the creators. This experience was also an opportunity to further their reflections on the process of academic writing in comics, which, although marginal, is gathering more and more attention from academics a…
