Hemostatic agents used in apical surgery: a review

2011

Objective: A review was made of the current literature on hemostatic agents used in apical surgery in order to determine their effectiveness and adverse effects. Material and methods: The main search terms used were: endodontic surgery, apicoectomy, apical surgery, periradicular surgery, hemostasis, hemostatic agents, and bleeding control. The authors searched the Medline database for articles published up to 1 September 2010. Experimental and clinical studies comparing the effectiveness and/ or adverse effects of two or more hemostatic agents and published between 2000 and 2010 were included in the review. Results: Four studies were analyzed: two clinical studies and two experimental studi…

Ecological aspects of plants inhabiting Mediterranean cliffs. Challenges and prospects of life in vertical environments

2021

El primer capítulo, titulado "The complexity of environmental factors: cliff microclimate", investiga…

Concentration measurements in molecular gas mixtures with a two-pump pulse femtosecond polarization spectroscopy technique

2001

0021-9606; Recently, we have demonstrated the ability of the Raman-induced polarization spectroscopy (RIPS) technique to accurately determine concentration or polarizability anisotropy ratio in low-pressure binary molecular mixtures [E. Hertz, B. Lavorel, O. Faucher, and R. Chaux, J. Chem. Phys. 113, 6629 (2000)]. It has been also pointed out that macroscopic interference, occurring when two revivals associated to different molecules time overlap, can be used to achieve measurements with picosecond time resolution. The applicability of the technique is intrinsically limited to a concentration range where the signals of both molecules are of the same magnitude. In this paper, a two-pump puls…

Structural analysis of Cryptosporidium parvum.

2004

Cryptosporidium parvum(Apicomplexa, formerly Sporozoa) is the causative agent of cryptosporidiosis, an enteric disease of substantial medical and veterinary importance.C. parvumshows a number of unique features that differ from the rest of the class of coccidea in which it is currently grouped taxonomically. Differences occur in the overall structure of the transmission form and the invasive stages of the parasite, its intracellular location, the presence of recently described additional extracellular stages, the host range and target cell tropism, the ability to autoinfection, the nonresponsiveness to anticoccidial drugs, the immune response of the host, and immunochemical and genetic char…

Mesoscopic organization in ionic liquids.

2017

We discuss some published results and provide new observations concerning the high level of structural complexity that lies behind the nanoscale correlations in ionic liquids (ILs) and their mixtures with molecular liquids. It turns out that this organization is a consequence of the hierarchical construction on both spatial (from ångström to several nanometer) and temporal (from fraction of picosecond to hundreds of nanosecond) scales, which requires joint use of experimental and computational tools. © 2017, Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Locking Reconstruction Double Plating of Distal Humeral Fractures: How Many Screws in the Distal Ulnar Column Segment in A3 Fracture Provide Superior…

2009

Objectives: Two 90-degree configurations of locking reconstruction plates with different numbers of screws in the distal ulnar column segment of distal extra-articular humeral fractures with metaphyseal comminution (A3) were biomechanically investigated. Methods: Eight pairs of fresh-frozen human humeri were used. For paired comparison, the humeri were divided into 2 randomized groups. In both groups, double-plate osteosyntheses with locking reconstruction plates were performed in 90-degree configurations. In group 1, the posteriorly placed radial column plate exceeded the capitellum and the ulnar column plate extended into the ulnar sulcus. The ulnar plate was molded around the medial epic…

Study of Structure–Third-Order Susceptibility Relation of Indandione Derivatives

2016

By using the Z-scan method we studied the third-order nonlinear optical parameters of several aminobenziliden-1,3-indandione (ABI) derivatives that have previously been shown to own second-order nonlinear optical properties. Measurements were carried out using two 1064 nm Nd:YAG lasers with picosecond (ps) and nanosecond (ns) pulse widths, respectively. When ns laser was employed in the Z-scan setup, a strong thermal lensing took place resulting in severe overestimation of optical Kerr coefficients. Due to this reason the ps laser was employed to evaluate correct magnitude of Kerr effect. For investigated organic molecules, experimental results show that two-photon absorption at 1064 nm is …

Phylogeny and prevalence of kobuviruses in dogs and cats in the UK

2013

AbstractThe kobuviruses represent an emerging genus in the Picornaviridae. Here we have used next generation sequencing and conventional approaches to identify the first canine kobuvirus (CaKoV) from outside the USA. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that a single lineage genotype of CaKoV now exists in Europe and the USA with 94% nucleotide similarity in the coding region. CaKoV was only identified in a single case from a case–control study of canine diarrhoea, suggesting this virus was not a frequent cause of disease in this population. Attempts to grow CaKoV in cell culture failed. Sequence analysis suggested CaKoV was distinct from human Aichi virus (AiV), and unlikely to pose a significan…

STUDIO DI UN’APPLICAZIONE IN CAMPO AERONAUTICO DI COMPOSITI STRUTTALI IBRIDI RESISTENTI AL FUOCO

2013

In the aeronautical/aerospace structural design the increasing demands of materials having high mechanical performance, has led to the a wide use of Polymeric Matrix Composites (PMCs) mainly reinforced by carbon fibers (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics, CFRP). The main drawbacks in the use of such composites are due to high sensitivity to environmental features and low working temperatures; moreover, these materials do not tolerate the fire exposure because of the inflammability of both the matrix and the fibers. In order to develop a composite that combines the structural performance of CFRP with a good strength to high temperatures and fire, in the present work the use of a hybrid composi…
