Single administration of tripeptide α-MSH(11-13) attenuates brain damage by reduced inflammation and apoptosis after experimental traumatic brain inj…
2013
Following traumatic brain injury (TBI) neuroinflammatory processes promote neuronal cell loss. Alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) is a neuropeptide with immunomodulatory properties, which may offer neuroprotection. Due to short half-life and pigmentary side-effects of α-MSH, the C-terminal tripeptide α-MSH(11-13) may be an anti-inflammatory alternative. The present study investigated the mRNA concentrations of the precursor hormone proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and of melanocortin receptors 1 and 4 (MC1R/MC4R) in naive mice and 15 min, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h after controlled cortical impact (CCI). Regulation of POMC and MC4R expression did not change after trauma, while MC1R levels incr…
Synthesis and anti-inflammatory activity of chalcone derivatives
1998
Chalcones and their derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity. In vitro, chalcones 2, 4, 8, 10 and 13 inhibited degranulation and 5-lipoxygenase in human neutrophils, whereas 11 behaved as scavenger of superoxide. Only four compounds (4-7) inhibited cyclo-oxygenase-2 activity. The majority of these samples showed anti-inflammatory effects in the mouse air pouch model.

Effects of overabundant nitrate and warmer temperatures on charophytes: The roles of plasticity and local adaptation
2018
Global change effects, such as warming and increases in nitrogen loading, alter vulnerable Mediterranean aquatic systems, and charophytes can be one of the most affected groups. We addressed the possible interaction between these factors on two populations of the cosmopolitan charophytes Chara hispida and Chara vulgaris. Populations were taken from two different environments, a nitrate-poor mountain lake and a nitrate-rich Mediterranean coastal spring. The laboratory experiment had a 2 × 2 factorial design based on two nitrate levels (similar to and double the local conditions) and two temperatures. Increased temperatures favoured the growth of the four populations, but an increase in nitra…
Porous materials as delivery and protective agents for Vitamin A
2016
The suitability of porous materials to immobilize and release under control bioactive molecules prompted us to design and study delivery systems of Vitamin A (VitA). This molecule, relevant in several physiological functions, is easily oxidized. Commercial VitA was immobilized in two different clays, montmorillonite K-10 (MMT) and sepiolite (SEP), and in MCM-41, by impregnation. Characterization of the resulting hybrid materials by XRD, FTIR and 13C and 29Si (MAS) NMR spectroscopies revealed its presence. The photo-stability tests showed decreased degradation of VitA in the clays, compared to MCM-41 and the pure VitA, while thermostability is observed until ∼100 °C. The kinetics of the rele…

The principles of bioethics and the growth of an intercultural bioethics
2010
In this article, I defend that the inter…
Chiral Symmetry And Low Energy Pion Photoproduction
1992
The low energy theorem based on chiral symmetry for the photoproduction of neutral pions from proton at threshold is reviewed in the light of recent experimental results from Saclay and Mainz. There is no appreciable disagreement at threshold but the energy dependence of the threshold amplitude remains unexplained. A critique of the assumptions made in deriving low energy theorems by various methods is presented.
