Sensitivity analysis of mesh warping and subsampling strategies for generating large scale electrophysiological simulation data
2011
The analysis of large-scale simulation data from virtual populations can be effective to gain computational insight into disease mechanisms and treatment strategies, which can serve for generating hypotheses for and focusing subsequent clinical trials. This can be instrumental in shortening the critical path in medical product development and more cost-effective clinical trials. A previously published pipeline established point correspondence among volumetric meshes to enable meaningful statistics on cardiac electrophysiological simulations on the anatomical distribution of a large-scale virtual population. Thin Plate Splines (TPS), derived from surface deformations, were used to warp a tem…
Vaporization Characteristics of Ethanol Droplets: Influence of the Environment Humidity
2011
The study of the gasification of a droplet via vaporization, which involves heat, mass and momentum transfer processes in gas and liquid phases, and their coupling at the droplet interface, is necessary for better understanding and modeling of complex spray and mixture formation issues. A detailed description of the vaporization of an isolated droplet has been realized in this experimental study aimed at investigating the impact of the water vapor contained in the surrounding gas on the evaporation of an ethanol droplet. The experimental set-up consists of a heated chamber with a cross quartz fibers configuration as droplet support. An ethanol droplet is located at the intersection of the c…
Przywracanie wiary w stworzenie. Wokół wierszy Katarzyny Citko z tomu "Post tenebras Lux"
2018
The turn of the modern human from the supernatural realm, and from the spiritual dimension - from transcendence - results in a vision of a world in whichthere is no place for the God-Creator and in which the story of creation is supplanted by evolution. On the antipodes of this contemporary trend of culture, which rejects the theme of creation and the vision of the God-Creator, the book of Katarzyna Citko Post tenebras Lux - awarded the Masurian Orpheus Prize in 2015, situates itself. In the poetic message of the volume, the author talks about the mystery of everyday life, which she experiences, about the experienced epiphany of the God-Creator, thus, giving expression to an authentic, deep…
Effect of 30 years of road traffic abandonment on epiphytic moss diversity
2014
Road traffic emits a cocktail of pollutants that can influence the vegetation and plant diversity in neighboring areas. However, the recovery potential of bryophytes after traffic abandonment is still little explored. In addition, the effects of the main pollutants of road verges, such as metals and salinity, on moss flora need to be investigated. In our study, we compared the moss richness and diversity in two closely related veteran tree allees of high conservation importance. The allees in Gryżów and Lubrza, Poland, were chosen because of their similarity in age, geographical location, type of surrounding areas, and tree species. The only difference was that the trees in Gryżów had not b…
Influence of littoral periphyton on whole-lake metabolism relates to littoral vegetation in humic lakes
2017
The role of littoral habitats in lake metabolism has been underrated, especially in humic lakes, based on an assumption of low benthic primary production (PP) due to low light penetration into water. This assumption has been challenged by recent recognition of littoral epiphyton dominance of whole-lake PP in a small highly humic lake and of epiphyton as an important basal food source for humic lake biota. However, as these studies have mostly concerned single lakes, there is a need to test their wider generality. We studied the whole-lake PP and community respiration (CR) in eight small humic lakes in southern Finland during July 2015 using 14C incorporation to measure pelagic PP and the ch…

V gamma 9V delta 2 T lymphocytes efficiently recognize and kill zoledronate-sensitized, imatinib-sensitive, and imatinib-resistant chronic myelogenou…
2010
Abstract Imatinib mesylate (imatinib), a competitive inhibitor of the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase, is highly effective against chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) cells. However, because 20–30% of patients affected by CML display either primary or secondary resistance to imatinib, intentional activation of Vγ9Vδ2 T cells by phosphoantigens or by agents that cause their accumulation within cells, such as zoledronate, may represent a promising strategy for the design of a novel and highly innovative immunotherapy capable to overcome imatinib resistance. In this study, we show that Vγ9Vδ2 T lymphocytes recognize, trogocytose, and efficiently kill imatinib-sensitive and -resistant CML cell lines pre…
Tree age‐dependent changes among epiphytic bryophyte communities in Mediterranean environments. A case study from Sicily (Italy)
2010
Abstract The epiphytic bryophytes inhabiting trees of different size/age in a Quercus ilex wood from Madonie Mountains (northern Sicily, Italy) were studied with the purpose of describing the changes that take place in the bryophyte stratum during the tree lifespan. Results indicate an increase of bryophyte cover combined with a progressive decrease of epiphytic lichens and the existence of an active process of species and community substitution. The way these processes take place corresponds to a succession sequence, which is characterised by a high number of pioneer species on the youngest trees and a sharp decline of species number on middle‐aged and old trees due to the great spread of …
