Evaluation of the original dose in irradiated dried fruit by EPR spectroscopy

2011

Abstract The electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) is one of the physical methods, recommended by the European Committee for Standardization, for the identification of irradiated food containing cellulose, such as dried fruit. In this work the applicability of EPR as identification method of irradiated pistachios, hazelnuts, peanuts, chestnuts, pumpkin seeds is evaluated; the time stability of the radiation induced signal is studied and the single aliquot additive dose method is used to evaluate the dose in the product.

Proximate and Sensory Evaluation of Fermented Seasonings from Soybean and Fluted Pumpkin Seeds

2020

Specialty condiment (ogiri) was produced from seeds of soybean (Glycine max) and fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis) by spontaneous moist solid substrate fermentation of their pre-processed mash. The two samples coded FSBM and FFPM respectively were evaluated for nutritional quality. Effects of fermentation on proximate values of the seeds were also analyzed. The two samples were further subjected to sensory analysis using commercial brand made  from castor bean (Ricinus communis) seeds coded FCBM as a control. Results show that FFPM was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in ash, crude fiber and protein, but significantly lower in moisture and fat than the FSBM. There was no significant…

"Man Jack the man is": An Analysis of Gerald Manley Hopkins' sonnet The Sheperd's Brow

2020

Although the sonnet The Shepherd’s Brow, written by G. M. Hopkins only a few months before his death, has been considered by Robert Bridges an unfinished work, critics have gradually tended to agree that it is one of the poet’s most refined and powerful poems, structurally and thematically. W. H. Gardner has read in it a “Swiftean cynicism”, while other more recent scholars have defined it “conflicted” (Mariani), “ironic and damned” (Feeney), and above all “cryptic” (Sobolev). Often studied as an ideal appendix to the so called “terrible sonnets”, by offering a close-reading of the sonnet this article argues that The Shepherd’s Brow is one of Hopkins’ most powerful poems, marking an importa…

HPLC-UV/Vis-APCI-MS/MS Determination of Major Carotenoids and Their Bioaccessibility from "Delica" (Cucurbita maxina) and "Violina" (Cucurbita moscha…

2018

Carotenoids are a widespread group of fat-soluble pigments, and their major nutritional importance comes from their pro-vitamin A activity and their antioxidant capacity. In this study, two different pumpkin cultivars (Cucurbita maxima, also named `Delica&rsquo

p42 MAPK phosphorylates 80 kDa MARCKS at Ser-113.

1996

Abstract It is demonstrated here that p42 MAPKinase (p42 MAPK) phosphorylates the M yristoylated A lanine- R ich C - K inase S ubstrate (MARCKS) at Ser-113. In permeabilised Swiss 3T3 cells activation of protein kinase C (PKC) leads to p42 MAPK activation, but only the protein kinase C sites in MARCKS become phosphorylated and not Ser-113. The mitogen platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) elicits the same response. These results demonstrate that while Ser-113 is a substrate for p42 MAPK in vitro and can be phosphorylated in vivo as shown by Taniguchi et al. [(1994) J. Biol. Chem. 269, 18299–18302], its phosphorylation is not subject to acute regulation by p42 MAPK in Swiss 3T3 cells.

Politiskā konkurence Latvijas pašvaldībās: labas pārvaldības dzinulis vai traucēklis?

2018

Pētījumā tiek apskatītas Latvijas pašvaldību vēlēšanas pēc administratīvi teritoriālās reformas. Tas ietver pilnus 2009.gada un 2013.gada sasaukumus, un Pašvaldību velēšanas 2017.gadā. Par darba teorētisko bāzi tiek izmantos Bartolīni izvirzīties četri sansencīgu politisko sistēmu priekšnoteikumi. Darba gaitā tiek noteikts, ka Latvijas pašvaldību politiskā sistēma atbilst visiem četriem priekšnoteikumiem. Darbā konkurence tiek operacionalizēta kā Politikās konkurences indekss. Pētījuma gaitā tiek noskaidrots, ka kopš 2013.gada velēšanām PKI rādītājs ir saglabājies nemainīgs. Novados PKI radītājs, joprojām atpaliek no 2009.gada radītāja, bet republikas pilsētās 2017.gada PKI rādītājs jau ned…

Pauline E. Hopkins's Intertextual Aesthetics in Contending Forces

2017

Pauline E. Hopkins‘s attitude towards fiction as a terrain where political and social truths could be uttered, helped her establish a new hybrid writing paradigm in Contending Forces, her historical romance. The extraordinary intertextual load of references, verbatim borrowings and changed citations, her Emersonian ―noble borrowing,‖ is in fact both an audacious maneuvering of popular literature, and a systematic and subversive redrafting of preceding canonical texts from the Anglo-American literary traditions and of contemporary historical political testimonies. Hopkins‘s palimpsestic aesthetics recreate a sense of African American literary interventions aimed at recomposing a new black ar…
