Chronic sacral neuromodulation for treatment of neurogenic bladder dysfunction: long-term results with unilateral implants

2001

Abstract Objectives. To investigate the therapeutic value of sacral neuromodulation in patients with neurogenic disorders in whom conservative treatment options were unsuccessful. Neurogenic disorders may result in various forms of lower urinary tract dysfunction. Methods. Twenty-seven patients (19 women, 8 men) aged 18 to 63 years (mean 44.9 years) were subjected to percutaneous test stimulation of the sacral spinal nerves. Their urologic symptoms consisted of bladder storage failure (n = 15) due to detrusor hyperreflexia and/or bladder hypersensitivity, failure to empty due to detrusor areflexia (n = 11), and combined bladder hypersensitivity and detrusor areflexia (n = 1). Twelve patient…

Autogenous tooth transplantation : evaluation of pulp tissue regeneration

2010

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the pulp survival that occur in transplants of autologous teeth, by comparing two surgical techniques: the conventional technique (autotransplantation for newly formed alveoli), and an alternative technique, (autotransplants for alveoli in the initial phase of healing). In each surgical techniques were applied, randomly, either saline solution or Emdogain ®. Study Design:The study group comprised 26 patents, in which 28 teeth were transplanted to recipient sockets prepared mechanically. Of the 28 teeth transplanted, 4 were intentional replants, and of the remainer, 11 had the apex closed and 13 open. The mean age at the time of transplantation …

Switching on the deep brain stimulation: effects on cardiovascular regulation and respiration.

2011

Abstract Background Objective of this study was to evaluate the acute cardiovascular and respiratory effects of switching on the deep brain stimulation in the follow up of nine Parkinson's disease patients with subthalamic nucleus stimulation and six cluster headache patients with posterior hypothalamic area stimulation. Methods Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate were monitored continuously during supine rest in both groups. Each patient was assessed in two conditions: resting supine with stimulator off and with stimulator on. Results In supine resting condition switching on the DBS induced no significant changes ( p  > 0.05) in systolic and diastolic bl…

Chronic sacral spinal nerve stimulation for fecal incontinence: long-term results with foramen and cuff electrodes.

2002

PURPOSE: Sacral spinal nerve stimulation is a new therapeutic approach for patients with severe fecal incontinence owing to functional deficits of the external anal sphincter. It aims to use the morphologically intact anatomy to recruit residual function. This study evaluates the long-term results of the first patients treated with this novel approach applying two techniques of sacral spinal nerve stimulator implantation. METHODS: Six patients underwent either of two techniques for electrode placement: one “closed” (electrodes placed through the sacral foramen) and one “open” (cuff electrodes placed after sacral laminectomy). Follow-up evaluation of their continence status ranged from 5 to …

Masticatory muscle activity evaluation by electromyography in subjects with zygomatic implants

2017

Background Zygomatic implants are an alternative treatment in the rehabilitation of atrophic maxilla to promote stability in the stomatognathic system. The aim of this study was to compare the electromyographic (EMG) activity of masseter and temporalis muscles in controls and in individuals with complete implant-supported dentures anchored in the zygomatic bone. Material and Methods Fifty-four volunteers of both genders (mean age 52.5 years) were selected and distributed into two groups: Individuals with zygomatic implant (ZIG; n=27) and fully dentate patients (CG; n=27). MyoSystem-BR1 was used to assess masseter and temporalis muscles EMG activity in different mandibular movements: protrus…

Different neuronal contribution to N20 somatosensory evoked potential and to CO2 laser evoked potentials: an intracerebral recording study

2004

Abstract Objective : To investigate the possible contribution of the primary somatosensory area (SI) to pain sensation. Methods : Depth recordings of CO 2 laser evoked potentials (LEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were performed in an epileptic patient with a stereotactically implanted electrode (Talairach coordinates y =−23, z =40) that passed about 10 mm below the hand representation in her left SI area, as assessed by the source of the N20 SEP component. Results : The intracerebral electrode was able to record the N20 SEP component after non-painful electrical stimulation of her right median nerve. The N20 potential showed a phase reversal in the bipolar montage (at about …

Exploiting the diversity of tomato: the development of a phenotypically and genetically detailed germplasm collection

2020

[EN] A collection of 163 accessions, including Solanum pimpinellifolium, Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme and Solanum lycopersicum var. lycopersicum, was selected to represent the genetic and morphological variability of tomato at its centers of origin and domestication: Andean regions of Peru and Ecuador and Mesoamerica. The collection is enriched with S. lycopersicum var. cerasiforme from the Amazonian region that has not been analyzed previously nor used extensively. The collection has been morphologically characterized showing diversity for fruit, flower and vegetative traits. Their genomes were sequenced in the Varitome project and are publicly available (solgenomics.net/projects/…

New medicines inspirated in Annonaceae = Nuevos fármacos inspirados en Annonáceas

2014

Active secondary metabolites (ASM) play a highly significant role in the drug discovery. Natural complex chemical skeleton such as statins isolated from Aspergillus terreus, or acetogenins specific from Annonaceae family, are not able to be invented in any laboratory. The ASM isolated from Annonaces, especially acetogenins and isoquinoline alkaloids should be considered as a source of continuous inspiration for the chemists, the pharmacologists and all researchers that are interested in discovering a new drug family.
