Analysis of Early Host Responses for Asymptomatic Disease Detection and Management of Specialty Crops
2010
The rapid and unabated spread of vector-borne diseases within US specialty crops threatens our agriculture, our economy, and the livelihood of growers and farm workers. Early detection of vector-borne pathogens is an essential step for the accurate surveillance and management of vector-borne diseases of specialty crops. Currently, we lack the tools that would detect the infectious agent at early (primary) stages of infection with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. In this paper, we outline a strategy for developing an integrated suite of platform technologies to enable rapid, early disease detection and diagnosis of huanglongbing (HLB), the most destructive citrus disease. The re…
Effect of microplastics on nasal and intestinal microbiota of the high-exposure population
2022
BackgroundMicroplastic has become a growing environmental problem. A balanced microbial environment is an important factor in human health. This study is the first observational cross-sectional study focusing on the effects of microplastics on the nasal and gut microbiota in a highly exposed population.MethodsWe recruited 20 subjects from a Plastic Factory (microplastics high-exposure area) and the other 20 from Huanhuaxi Park (microplastics low-exposure area) in Chengdu, China. We performed the microplastic analysis of soil, air, and intestinal secretions by laser infrared imaging, and microbiological analysis of nasal and intestinal secretions by 16S rDNA sequencing.ResultsThe result show…
Indication of an order-order-transition by a partial disordering in ABC-triblock copolymers
1996
Poly(ethylene-alt-propylene)-block-polyethylethylene-block-polystyrene (PEP-b-PEE-b-PS) triblock copolymers were synthesized by anionic polymerization and subsequent hydrogenation of poly-1,4-isoprene-block-poly-1,2-butadiene-block-polystyrene triblock copolymers (1,4PI-b-1,2PB-b-PS). Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical spectroscopy reveal an order-order transition which is induced by the mixing of PEP and PEE above their respective order-disorder transition (ODT).
Monolayer phases of the fatty acids and their ethyl esters
1991
The miscibility correspondence between water-surface monolayer phases of the fatty acids and their ethyl esters was determined. Ester phases were found corresponding to all the known phases of the acids, and vice versa, in similar relative positions of the π-T diagram. Evidence is presented for the existence of a ninth distinct miscibility category, represented by a phase in each of the pure materials, and a tenth found only in mixtures. We propose a tentative correspondence to bulk smectic miscibility categories.
Dielectric investigations on liquid-crystalline polymers with the liquid crystal unit p…
Evolution of the “knitting pattern” morphology in ABC triblock copolymers
1996
A new morphology of ternary ABC triblock copolymers is presented which results from the asymmetric interaction between a centre block (poly(ethylene-co-butene)) to different end blocks (polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate)). This morphology with the appearance of a “knitting pattern” can be described as an intermediate of a morphology of A, B and C lamellae and a morphology of A and C lamellae with B cylinders at the A/C interface.
Thermal frontal polymerization with a thermally released redox catalyst
2012
ABSTRACT: We studied thermal frontal polymerization using a re-dox systeminan attempt to lower the temperature of thefrontallypolymerizable system while increasing the front velocity so as toobtain a self-sustaining front in a thinner layer than without theredox components. A cobalt-containing polymer with a meltingpoint of 63 C (Intelimer 6050X11) and cumene hydroperoxidewere used with a triacrylate. The use of the Intelimer decreasedthe front velocity but allowed fronts to propagate in thinner layersand with more filler while still having a pot life of days. Nonplanarmodes of propagation occurred. Fronts propagated faster when6-O-palmitoyl- L -ascorbic acid was used as a reductant. Intere…
Interacting effects of simulated eutrophication, temperature increase, and microplastic exposure on Daphnia
2020
The effects of multiple stressors are difficult to separate in field studies, and their interactions may be hard to predict if studied in isolation. We studied the effects of decreasing food quality (increase in cyanobacteria from 5 to 95% simulating eutrophication), temperature increase (by 3 °C), and microplastic exposure (1% of the diet) on survival, size, reproduction, and fatty acid composition of the model freshwater cladoceran Daphnia magna. We found that food quality was the major driver of Daphnia responses. When the amount of cyanobacteria increased from 5 to 95% of the diet, there was a drastic decrease in Daphnia survival (from 81 ± 15% to 24 ± 21%), juvenile size (from 1.8 ± 0.…
Solubility and solvation features of native cyclodextrins in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate
2022
The comprehension of the mechanism entailing efficient solvation of cyclodextrins (CD) by green solvents is of great relevance to boost environmentally sustainable usages of smart supramolecular systems. Here, 1-ethyl-3- methylimidazolium acetate, an ecofriendly ionic liquid (IL), is considered as an excellent solvent for native CDs. This IL efficiently dissolves up to 40 wt.% β- and γ-CD already at ambient temperature and X-ray scattering indicates that CDs do not tend to detrimental flocculation under these drastic concentration conditions. Simu- lation techniques reveal the intimate mechanism of CD solvation by the ionic species: while the strong hydrogen bonding acceptor acetate anion i…
Inhalable Formulation Based on Lipid–Polymer Hybrid Nanoparticles for the Macrophage Targeted Delivery of Roflumilast
2022
Here, novel lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles (LPHNPs), targeted to lung macrophages, were realized as potential carriers for Roflumilast administration in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To achieve this, Roflumilast-loaded fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles, based on a polyaspartamide-polycaprolactone graft copolymer, and lipid vesicles, made from 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-phosphoethanolamine-N-(polyethylene glycol)-mannose, were properly combined using a two-step method, successfully obtaining Roflumilast-loaded hybrid fluorescent nanoparticles (Man-LPHFNPs@Roflumilast). These exhibit colloidal size and a ne…
