Internal jugular vein entrapment in a multiple sclerosis patient.

We describe a multiple sclerosis patient presenting with compression of the internal jugular vein caused by aberrant omohyoid muscle. Previously this patient underwent balloon angioplasty of the same internal jugular vein. Ten months after this endovascular procedure, Doppler sonography revealed totally collapsed middle part of the treated vein with no outflow detected. Still, the vein widened and the flow was restored when the patient’s mouth opened. Thus, the abnormality was likely to be caused by muscular compression. We describe 5 preterm infants (25th to 30th week of gestation) suffering from alimentary copper deficiency. The diagnosis was confirmed by low serum copper and caeruloplasmin concentrations. Characteristic clinical findings were repeated apnoeic attacks, hypopigmentation of skin and hair, anaemia, neutropenia and leucopenia refractory to other therapy, as well as increasing serum alkaline phosphatase activity in the first month of life. Imaging photoplethysmography for assessment of chronic pain patients

In present pilot study application of multi-spectral imaging photoplethysmography for assessment of chronic pain patients during topical skin heating test was proposed. Photoplethysmography signal was recorded at 420nm, 530nm and 810nm illumination from the skin and corresponding perfusion indexes and perfusion maps were calculated. The novel parameter-PPGflare index was introduced and compared in neuropathic patients and healthy volunteers. Preliminary results suggest that neuropathic patients exhibited significantly lower PPGflare index, and that local heating substantially change PPG waveform at heat exposed skin region. Temporal and Spatial Evolution of Cortical Blood Flow in the Penumbra of Venous Infarcts

A cortical venous infarction model has been evaluated regarding the temporal and spatial evolution of regional flow reduction. Two cortical veins were occluded photochemically with rose bengal and fiberoptic illumination. Seven rats served to demonstrate effects on regional cortical blood flow using laser Doppler scanning. After two-vein occlusion, there was a widespread reduction of flow that gradually deteriorated after vein occlusion when regional cortical flow in a 3.5 x 7.0 mm window: after 15 min it had decreased to 57.8% ± 8.0%, and after 75 min it was 34.3% ± 5.4%. Modelling of the Ischemic Penumbra

What happens to the ischemic penumbra – defined as a territory of critically reduced blood flow in the close neighborhood of an ischemic core – determines outcome after stroke. Currently the pathophysiology of the penumbra is studied predominantly in rat models with occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. Here we propose two other rat models with distinct advantages. One produces a large territory of critical flow reduction in the cortex of one hemisphere without presence of an infarct core: this model is suited to study mediator mechanisms that may transform the penumbra into necrotic tissue. Advanced sensor device for shape analysis of the tissue- reflected mean single period photoplethysmography (SPPPG) signals has been designed and clinically tested. The SPPPG signal shape reveals individual features of the patient's cardio-vascular state. Clinical studies of several patient groups (e.g. diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis obliterans, Raynaud's syndrome) made possible to specify components of the SPPPG signal that are sensitive to the corresponding organic or functional pathologies. Physical activity compensates for increased mortality risk among older people with poor muscle strength

The aim of the study was to determine whether habitual physical activity can compensate for the increased mortality risk among older people with poor muscle strength. Mortality was followed up for 10 years after laboratory examination in 558 community dwelling 75- and 80-year-old men and women. Maximal isometric strength of five muscle groups was measured and tertile cut-off points were used to categorize participants. Participants, who reported moderate physical activity for at least 4 h a week, were categorized as physically active and the others as sedentary. Duplex sonography is a non-invasive procedure which permits the determination of flow velocity and direction in visceral vessels. Results in 50 normals have shown that small arteries can be evaluated in about 50% of cases. The portal venous system can be demonstrated in all cases; average flow velocity and volume is 15.2 +/- 2.8 cm/s and 694 +/- 230 ml/min, corresponding with the values obtained by invasive methods. Clinical application for duplex examinations can be found in portal hypertension, varices, thromboses, aneurysms and transplant kidneys.
