Previous studies have identified an altered C1q molecule in synovial fluids from the joints of rheumatoid arthritis patients. We therefore immunized arthritis-susceptible Lewis 1A.AVN rats with either native C1q (C1q nat), altered (oxidized) C1q (C1q ox), or type II collagen (CII, induces arthritis in these animals), in order to induce arthritis. Unlike C1q nat, both CII and C1q ox were able to induce swelling and erythema of joints consistent with an arthritis-like inflammatory reaction. We report 17 cases of the campomelic syndrome (CS) and a follow-up of one of the original patients of Maroteaux et al who is now 17 years old. Our review is based on 97 patients, including our own. An infant with the CS presents at birth with spectacularly short and bowed femora and tibiae. The initial chest radiograph confirms the diagnosis by demonstrating extremely small bladeless scapulae and hypoplastic pedicles of many thoracic vertebrae. Ossification of the sternal segments, pubis, talus, and knee epiphyses is also retarded. Usually the hips are dislocated and talipes equinovarus deformities are present. Chondrodysplasia punctata, tibia-metacarpal (MT) type.

We describe 7 patients with a new form of chondrodysplasia punctata. Its principal clinical manifestations are flat midface and nose, short limbs, and otherwise normal development. Consistent radiologic manifestations in the newborn infant are discrete calcific stippling, coronal clefts of vertebral bodies, short tibiae, and shortness of the 2nd and 3rd metacarpal bones. Radiologic findings in the older child include shortness of tibiae and the 3rd and 4th metacarpals.
Stippled epiphyses in fetal alcohol syndrome.

We report on punctate epiphyseal calcifications (stippled epiphyses) in the fetal alcohol syndrome and present the differential diagnosis of chondrodysplasia punctata. A literature survey shows that epiphyseal calcifications accompanying alcoholic embryopathy are regularly located in the lower limbs and rarely found in the upper extremities.

In this report we are able to show that intravenous (i.v.) application (day 0) of a nonapeptide (residues 26-34) from the human C1q A-chain (designated peptide A-C1q) prior to intradermal (i.d.) administration of chicken type II collagen (CII) in arthritis-susceptible DBA/1 mice (H2q), leads to abrogation of polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) invasion into the joints. This nonapeptide exhibits epitope characteristics and high homology to residues 137-147 of CB11 (a cyanogen bromide fragment of chicken CII, known to contain both arthritis inducing and suppressing determinants). The author has studied, in a group of 40 dissections on cadavers of individuals of different ages, the main “critical zones” of entrapment of some terminal branches of the lumbo-sacral plexus, which include canals (fibrous, osteo-fibrous, fibro-muscular), intervals (intermuscular, fibro-muscular, musculo-ligamentous), rings (fibrous or fibro-muscular) and foramina. They provide the topographical anatomical basis for possible compressive phenomena of the nerves of the lower limb.
Arthralgia as an early extraintestinal symptom of Whipple's disease. Report of five cases.

Five patients with Whipple's disease all suffered from arthralgia for a long time (15 years in one case) before developing gastrointestinal or other symptoms. In all patients, arthralgia was seronegative, and there was no evidence of joint destruction. Arthralgias were symmetric and migrating. Whipple's disease is part of the differential diagnosis of enteropathic arthralgia. Thereby, the polymerase chain reaction can be a helpful tool to prove Whipple's disease in difficult differential diagnosis.

AIMS: To report on our anatomic and electrophysiologic findings about the sacral nerve roots and the pelvic splanchnic nerves during laparoscopic pelvic surgery. METHODS: The pelvic splanchnic nerves and the sacral nerve roots were dissected in 336 consecutive patients undergoing laparoscopy for pelvic pain syndrome or gynecologic diseases. Intraoperative assessment of the functionality of the exposed nerves was performed using the LAparoscopic Neuro-Navigation (LANN) technique. RESULTS: Dissection of the sacral roots and the splanchnic pelvic nerves lateral to the sacral hypogastric fascia was feasible without any complications in all patients in this series.
