Multilevel system optimisation via nonlinearity management
2006
Nonlinearity management is explored as a multilevel tool to obtain maximum transmission reach in a WDM system. A technique for the fast calculation of the optimal dispersion pre-compensation in systems with distributed amplification is proposed.
Patterns of genetic and phenotypic variation in Iris haynei and I. atrofusca (Iris sect. Oncocyclus = the royal irises) along an ecogeographical grad…
2002
Iris haynei and I. atrofusca are two closely related narrow endemics distributed vicariously along an ecogeographical north-south gradient in Israel and the West Bank. To obtain baseline information of the taxonomic status, conservation and population history of these taxa, we investigated patterns of phenotypic variation and the partitioning of genetic variation within and among populations using dominant random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Multivariate (principal components analysis) and taxonomic distance analyses based on morphometric traits from eight populations revealed no unambiguous separation into two distinct groups. Results of genetic analyses for nine populations d…
A population genetic study of the endangered plant speciesLimonium dufourii(Plumbaginaceae) based on amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP)
1999
Limonium dufourii (Plumbaginaceae) is a triploid species with obligate apomictic reproduction and is endemic to the East Mediterranean coast of Spain, where it is present in only six populations, most of which have a very low number of individuals. Genetic variation and population structure in this species was studied using amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) as markers, using the same individuals as in a previous study with random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Three different primers provided 252 bands of which 51 were polymorphic among the 152 individuals analysed. Those polymorphic bands were able to define 65 different phenotypes, of which all but two were present in onl…
Phylogenetic relationships, evolutionary origin, taxonomic status, and genetic structure of the endangered local Lower Elbe river (Germany) endemic O…
2005
Abstract Oenanthe conioides is an endangered local endemic of the Lower Elbe river region in Germany where it is found in areas with freshwater tides. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were used to investigate its phylogenetic relationships, evolutionary origin, taxonomic status, and genetic structure. Oe. conioides is most closely related to Oe. aquatica and Oe. fluviatilis, and cannot be distinguished from Oe. aquatica by ITS sequence variation. Oe. aquatica is found mainly in standing or slow-flowing freshwater habitats. The AFLP analysis indicated that Oe. conioides may constitute a monophyletic lineage nested within Oe. aquatica…
Magnetic field amplification and magnetically supported explosions of collapsing, non-rotating stellar cores
2014
We study the amplification of magnetic fields in the collapse and the post-bounce evolution of the core of a non-rotating star of 15 solar masses in axisymmetry. To this end, we solve the coupled equations of magnetohydrodynamics and neutrino transport in the two-moment approximation. The pre-collapse magnetic field is strongly amplified by compression in the infall. Initial fields of the order of 1010 G translate into proto-neutron star fields similar to the ones observed in pulsars, while stronger initial fields yield magnetar-like final field strengths. After core bounce, the field is advected through the hydrodynamically unstable neutrino-heating layer, where non-radial flows due to con…
Accurate tuning of mismatched twin-core fiber filters
1998
We have demonstrated a reproducible and accurate way of tuning the coupling wavelength of a mismatched twin-core filter. This method allows high quality all-fiber filters to be implemented with low loss at any desired wavelength over a range of few hundred nanometers from the same fiber. An ~500-nm tuning range is demonstrated, limited only by the measurement setup and not by the technique itself. Highly accurate control of the filtering wavelength in combination with control of filtering strength by adjustment of the length of the twin-core fibers allows complex filter profiles to be implemented by cascading of several different filters. These filters are also very stable to a change in te…
The focal plane assembly for the Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit instrument
2016
This paper summarizes a preliminary design concept for the focal plane assembly of the X-ray Integral Field Unit on the Athena spacecraft, an imaging microcalorimeter that will enable high spectral resolution imaging and point-source spectroscopy. The instrument's sensor array will be a ~ 3840-pixel transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter array, with a frequency domain multiplexed SQUID readout system allowing this large-format sensor array to be operated within the thermal constraints of the instrument's cryogenic system. A second TES detector will be operated in close proximity to the sensor array to detect cosmic rays and secondary particles passing through the sensor array for off…
