Banks Digitalization - A Challenge for the Romanian Banking Sector

2019

Abstract The banking system has undergone several transformations since its beginning up to now, some as a result of adapting to customers’ requirements that have become increasingly sophisticated, and others as a result of the economic and political contexts that have passed, which again – have required its adaptation. Regardless of the situation, the banks have undergone a large digitization process, a process that is now in progress and which in the coming years can cause a significant change in the banking we knew about 10-15 years ago. Through this paper, I propose to analyse the situation of the banking system in terms of adapting to these challenges, at the level of Romania, in the c…

The COVID-19 Impact on Bucharest Stock Exchange. The First Six Months

2020

Abstract The first case of coronavirus was registered in Romania on February 26. From this moment, Romania has become “infected”, just like the whole world, and the economy has suffered milder or more severe symptoms, depending on the activity field. Four months have passed since then, during which in Romania, the effects of the health crisis overlapped with a tense political situation, in an unfavorable economic context. Once the COVID-19 hits each country, the economic effects started to become visible in all the world’s financial markets, the financial market being among the first to suffer the impact of the COVID-19 crisis. This paper analyzes how the financial market in Romania was aff…

Superdiversity perspective and the sociolinguistics of social media

2018

This chapter shows how the superdiversity perspective suggested in recent critical sociolinguistics provides the study of social media discourse and communication with a useful approach to conceptualizing and empirically investigating complex and multiple axes of diversity and difference in social media practices. It discusses recent work in sociolinguistics of social media, highlighting how social media practices illustrate many of the aspects of contemporary social life and communication that are considered symptomatic of superdiversity. It shows how research in this field has moved from viewing superdiversity as a quality or quantity characterizing specific places, spaces, groups and net…

Political discretion and corruption: the impact of institutional quality on formal and informal entrepreneurship

2017

This paper analyses the impact of political discretion and corruption on firm creation rates, distinguishing between formal and informal entrepreneurship. The results show that political discretion discourages the creation of formal enterprises as fewer restrictions on the government's opportunistic behaviour increases uncertainty and risks for entrepreneurial activities. Corruption also has a negative influence on formal entrepreneurship, as it increases the costs of the procedures required to create and manage the company with no assurance that the other party will fulfil the agreement. Regarding informal entrepreneurship, our results show that the negative impact of corruption also appli…

In the Mood: Place and Tools in the Music Industry with a Focus on Entrepreneurship

2016

In this book a phenomenological approach is often used to explore how objects are sensitised: the analyses explore what is happening interobjectively. Humanitarian aid, political portraits, and bequeathed objects are examples of such sensitising in the previous chapters. Chapter 9 adds an analysis of place and dwells on affective atmospheres. The point of departure is a Norwegian black metal musician. While being part of a subgenre of heavy metal music associated with being macho, aggressive, grotesque, and even satanic, this musician has a striking tendency to constantly involve nature – meadows, trees, streams, and a watermill from his homestead – in his music and performances. Building o…

Inter-basin water transfer conflicts. The case of the Tagus-Segura Aqueduct (Spain)

2020

Since its inauguration in 1979, the Tagus-Segura Aqueduct has become one of the hydraulic infrastructures that have given rise to the highest number of inter-regional conflicts in Spain during recent decades. The aim of this paper is to analyse the political, social, environmental and economic conflicts presented in the donor (Tagus) and recipient (Segura) basins of this infrastructure. To this end, through the holding of interviews with the main stakeholders and an analysis of the regulations, an assessment has been made of the results (for and against) of those who defend maintaining this infrastructure, owing to its far-reaching social and economic impact, and those who advocate its imme…

Geodiversity and geoheritage: Detecting scientific and geographic biases and gaps through a bibliometric study

2019

Abstract Many scientists have recognized that there is diversity in nature, including biodiversity, geodiversity, and pedodiversity. Studies in biodiversity date back as far as the 1700s, but geodiversity and pedodiversity studies are much more recent, dating to the late 1970s to early 1980s. Given that we are now approaching 40 years of geodiversity and geoheritage work, this study was undertaken to determine areas that have been well addressed and where current gaps are. This was accomplished by reviewing the publications in the journal “Geoheritage”, the Scopus and Google Scholar databases, and established geoparks according to UNESCO records. It was found that geodiversity studies typic…
