How significant is yardstick competition among governments? Three reasons to dig deeper
2013
22 pages; The significance of yardstick competition among governments is now confirmed with regard to fiscal variables. This is an important result but the significance of the mechanism must also be sought in a context broader than that of fiscal federalism and without limitation to relations and processes fully observable. Three points are made. Even in the case of governments trying to mimic each other over a single variable, additional variables are involved in an important way. Yardstick competition can be latent without being ineffective. Its major effect, then, is to set bounds to the choices that office-holders could think of making. Finally, the mechanism is a hidden albeit essentia…
The Holocaust, the Founding of Israel and the Arab-Israeli War in the British, Swedish and Finnish Press
2011
The fact that the gap between the founding of the state of Israel and the end of the Holocaust was only three years (almost to date), creates, at least in retrospect, a strong link between the two events. Articulating this view, Walter Harrelson has written that ‘[A] shamed world was certainly ready, after the Holocaust and the struggle of Jews from Europe to get to Israel, to support the Partition Plan that led to the establishment of the state.’1 Yehuda Bauer has argued that the birth of a nation ‘bridges the gap between an unconquered past tragedy and the hope for the resurrection of an almost mortally wounded people’.2 Peter Novick also agrees that the link exists, although in less cert…
The Dark Trienium: Valencia, 1389-1391. Unrest coinciding with an assault on the Jewish district
2012

Costuming in Seán Keating’s self-portraits: theatrical guise or political disguise?
2018
Astana's architecture as a representation of the new Kazakhstan : political reading of Astana's built environment
2015
In my Master’s thesis I explore the political reasons behind Kazakhstan’s Almaty Astana capital relocation and the creation of the new capital Astana with new and futuristic architecture. The strategy is to analyse Kazakhstan’s capital relocation and Astana’s creation and beautification by applying Kenneth Burke’s concepts of the Dramatistic Pentad and the Idea of the Negative. Through Astana’s three most prominent new pieces of architecture, the Baiterek Tower, the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation and Khan Shatyr shopping and entertainment centre, I analyse Kazakhstan’s political aspirations and new representational practises. Through Astana’s architecture and Burke’s Dramatistic Pentad …
Towards a Deeper Understanding of the Meaning of Male Beach Worker-Female Tourist Relationships on the Kenyan Coast
2017
<p>Knowledge and research on sexual-economic relationships between local men and Western female tourists in different touristic locations around the world has grown, as has public interest and awareness of the phenomenon. However, the direct perspectives of the men whose lives constitute the focus of such studies remain scarce. This has resulted in the phenomenon being understood mainly and inadequately through the concepts of 'romance tourism' and 'female sex tourism'. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in Kenya's South Coast region, this article foregrounds the voices of male beach workers and the meanings they assign to these relationships, against a backdrop of the histori…
TOURISM, CHARITY, AND FATHERS’ FUNDRAISING STRATEGIES FOR THEIR CHILDREN’S EDUCATION ON THE KENYAN COAST
2018
Increasing empirical evidence shows that child-raising and children’s formal education are influenced by and embedded in cross-border processes and constellations. In Kenya’s South Coast region, widespread support for children’s education is taking place through the long-term relationships local men and women are establishing with tourists from the global North. In this regard, seemingly casual beach encounters initiated by local fathers — who invite western tourist acquaintances to visit their villages and homes — have become a common parental strategy for engaging with tourists who have the potential to become sponsors for their children. In this article we look at the social, economic, a…
