Local Interactions and the Global City Metropolization in Warsaw
2002
A number of the world's large cities are taking on increasing economic importance in the international arenas because they concentrate high-order activities This metropolization process is a result of the changes occurring in the emerging post-industrial economy, i.e. the rise of services and information. It is based on the combination of proximity interactions and global interactions and it is characterized both by a specific internal spatial pattern and by a large outside area of influence. Since the transition period, services, and particularly high-order services, have grown more rapidly in Poland than in EU countries, as if a catching-up process has been underway. A large part of these…
Polarization and suburbanisation in Warsaw
2001
The economic transition in Poland leads to a restructuration of economic activities which affects spatial patterns of cities, especially in Warsaw. Analyzing the location and re-location of population and employment in Poland’s capital allows to enlarge the debate on the suburbanization forms to the Central and Oriental European Countries. The results support the fact that the city center is still largely the most important district in terms of population andemployment, so that in 1999 the city keeps a strong monocentric character. However, from 1994 to 1999, population and employment move towards the Warsaw’s suburbs. Two significant observations, namely the suburbanization of retailing an…
2001
This article evaluates empirically the effect o f market introduction on the level o f regional inequalities and on the polarisation o f economic activities in Poland. We note an increase o f the disparities between regions over the relevant period. The re-polarisation process cannot been explained by a spatial re-allocation of labour force but rather results o f the differentiation of sectoral restructuring between regions the regional diversity o f sectoral adaptation. The search for agglomeration economies explains the spatial concentration o f services and o f added value in the regions where the biggest cities are located. A cumulative process o f agglomeration is observed. Therefore, …
2016
The main subject of this thesis is a case study of Polish cinematographic production under the communist period in the 1970's called TOR (Kieslowski, Zanussi, Rozewicz). This research points out the author-filmmaker's creative autonomy confronted to the Cultural Policy upheavals which have determined film production in a non - democratic country : Polish People's Republic in the 1970s. The TOR filmography is homogeneous and its movies transmit the author-filmmaker's point of view about the existential and moral matters while the individual occupies the central place. How was it possible to produce films focused on the individual in a country where the political class and its collective poli…

The political aspirations of the press of the Germans evicted from Silesia : as seen in the case of the Grafschafter Bote
2012
The integration process was very difficult for the millions of Germans evicted from the eastern territories at the end of WWII. The numerous newspapers that they published in FRG testify to their unique identity. This sector of the press reflects a large social group. One can find there the integration problems as well as the political claims of the evicted Germans. The Grafschafter Bote is a newspaper aimed at the Germans who were evicted from the County of Glatz (pol. Ziemia Kłodzka) in Silesia. It is an independent newspaper representing the most important associations and it has been published continually since 1950. The study of its content allows a better understanding of the evicted …
History and Nowa Huta
2007
Can football heal the wounds of the past? The image of Poland in the German media on the occasion of the European football championship
2016
In 2012, Poland and Ukraine organized the European football championship. In Germany, where football has a prominent place in the media, the newspapers seized the occasion to shed a new light on Poland. Indeed, when the articles concerned Poland, the main topic in the German press always seemed to be the diplomatic relationships, which are scarred by the history and never-ending political controversies. This article shows how a major sporting event can trigger an opportunity for the general press to present a well-known geographic space beyond traditional points of views and clichés.
