Influence of morphology and chemical structure on the inverse response of polypropylene to gamma radiation under vacuum

1999

Abstract In this work the influence of the chemical structure and of the morphology on the gamma-radiation effects on polypropylene based polymers is studied on the basis of a previously discussed kinetic model [1] . For this aim an isotactic polypropylene and a random ethylene–propylene copolymer were irradiated under vacuum at one dose rate and several absorbed doses after well defined solidification conditions. We show that the model is reliable varying both the chemical structure and the morphology of the polypropylene based polymer. An inversion of the response of the material to gamma radiation under vacuum is always observed, and the inversion conditions depend on the irradiation par…

Novel polyolefin materials via catalysis and reactive processing

1998

Recent advances in transition metal catalyzed olefin polymerization and melt processing stimulate the production of new polymers derived from old monomers Modern polyolefin processes do not require polymer purification and give excellent control of molecular and supermolecular polyolefin architectures. Progress in catalyst design and preparation of tailor-made homo-and copolymers is highlighted for isotactic, syndiotactic, atactic and stereoblock polypropylene (PP), novel 1-olefin copolymers, and ethylene copolymers with polar monomers, e.g., CO and acrylics Today polyethylene short-and long-chain-branching is controlled either by uniform ethylene copolymerization with 1-olefins using singl…

Large-area dielectric breakdown performance of polymer films

2015

In this study, large-area dielectric breakdown performances of various bi-axially oriented polypropylene (BOPP)-silica nanocomposite films are studied by utilizing the self-healing multi-breakdown method presented in the Part I of this publication. In particular, the effects of silica filler content, pre-mixing method, co-stabilizer content and film processing on the large-area breakdown performance are analyzed. Nanostructural and film cross-sectional analyses are correlated to the breakdown responses. The optimum silica filler content is found to reside at the low fill fraction level (~1 wt-%) and automatic pre-mixing of the raw materials and the optimization of the orientation temperatur…

Effect of the elongational flow on morphology and properties of polypropylene/graphene nanoplatelets nanocomposites

2018

Abstract In this work the effect of the presence of graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) on the morphology and mechanical properties of polypropylene/GnP nanocomposites has been investigated when these polymer systems are subjected to non-isothermal elongational flow in a melt spinning operation. The presence of the GnP magnifies the effect of the elongational flow. Indeed, the elastic modulus and the tensile strength of nanocomposites increases with the orientation more than that observed for the pure matrix. Moreover, the elongation at break increases at low values of the draw ratio for the nanocomposites, while, the matrix shows the expected decrease in deformability. These effects have been cor…

Swift heavy ion induced modifications of luminescence and mechanical properties of polypropylene/ZnO nanocomposites

2014

Abstract The effect of irradiation with 150 MeV Kr ions at fluencies 10 11 and 10 12  ions/cm 2 on luminescence of PP/ZnO nanocomposites and PP matrix has been studied. In unirradiated composite the luminescence is comparatively weak and is contributed mainly by the excitonic luminescence of ZnO. Irradiation of nanocomposite and PP matrix leads to a strong increase of luminescence intensity in a wide spectral range of 360–600 nm. It follows from the obtained results that the enhancement of luminescence originates mainly from the broken bonds in PP matrix. Ion-induced scission of polymer bonds and fragmentation of polymer chains is deduced also from the nanoindentation tests which show a rem…

Aqueous Laponite Clay Dispersions in the Presence of Poly(ethylene oxide) or Poly(propylene oxide) Oligomers and their Triblock Copolymers

2008

The effect of polyethylene oxide (PEO) or polypropylene oxide (PPO) oligomers of various molecular weight (Mw) as well as of triblock copolymers, based on PEO and PPO blocks, on aqueous laponite RD suspensions was studied with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The radius of gyration (RG) increases for low Mw whereas the opposite occurs for larger Mw. This behavior is explained on the-basis that an effective RG is given by two contributions: (1) the size of the particles coated with the polymer and (2) the interactions between the laponite RD particles which are attractive for small and repulsive for large polymers. The SANS curves in the whole Q-range are well described by a model of n…

Gamma radiation induced maleation of polypropylene using supercritical CO 2 : preliminary results

2000

Abstract The charging of maleic anhydride (MA) and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) into polypropylene matrices has been carried out by CO2 in supercritical conditions. The grafting of MA into polymer chains was done through gamma irradiation in CO2 atmosphere (0.1 MPa, 25°C). The grafting was successful and the amount of grafted anhydride was dependent on the amount of MA and DCP charged into the polypropylene matrix. The presence of grafted succinic anhydride was shown by FT-IR spectroscopy and its amount was determined through a calibration curve derived from standard samples. The effect of swelling due to supercritical CO2, maleic anhydride grafting and gamma irradiation on the molecular structur…

Improving the properties of polypropylene–wood flour composites by utilization of maleated adhesion promoters

2007

Polymer composites filled with natural organic fillers have gained a significant interest during the last few years, because of several advantages they can offer compared with properties of inorganic-mineral fillers. However, these composites (based, in most cases, on polyolefins) often show a reduction in some mechanical properties. This is mainly due to the problems regarding dispersion of the polar filler particles in the non-polar polymer matrix and their interfacial adhesion with polymer chains. In this work, polypropylene-wood flour composites were prepared and the effect of the addition of a maleated polypropylene was investigated. The two materials were compounded by an industrial c…

Mechanical, structural and magnetic properties of polypropylene/iron ferrite magnetic nanocomposites

2012

In this research, composites of polypropylene (PP) and a relatively small concentrations of iron ferrite (Fe3O4) nanopowder equal to 2, 5 and 10 wt.% have been made. An methacrylate monomer 2,2'-bis-(4-(2-methylprop-2-enoyloxy)phenyl)- propane (BAD) was added at a small amount (3 wt.%) to part of the composites during the thermoplastic mixing. The BAD has been used as a compatibilizing agent on the phase interaction between the filler and the matrix of polypropylene. It has been found that composites have adjustable mechanical, structural and magnetic properties dependent on the content of magnetic filler. Increase of concentration of ferrite particles affects a notable increase of elastic …

Dynamic evolution of the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction upon addition of a non-ionic polymer

2006

Abstract The dynamic evolution of the oscillatory Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction upon addition of increasing amount of the non-ionic polymer polypropylene glycol with molecular weight 425 g mol−1 (PPG-425) was investigated in a stirred-batch reactor by monitoring the Ce(IV) absorbance changes. The oscillatory parameters are significantly altered by the presence of the polymer. The findings obtained in the present work revealed that the PPG-425 is not only more effective, than other polymer previously [R. Lombardo, C. Sbriziolo, M.L. Turco Liveri, K. Pelle, M. Wittmann, Z.
