Patterns of male-specific inter-population divergence in Europe, West Asia and North Africa

summary We typed 1801 males from 55 locations for the Y-specific binary markers YAP, DYZ3, SRY "!)$" and the (CA)n microsatellites YCAII and DYS413. Phylogenetic relationships of chromosomes with the same binary haplotype were condensed in seven large one-step networks, which accounted for 95% of all chromosomes. Their coalescence ages were estimated based on microsatellite diversity. The three largest and oldest networks undergo sharp frequency changes in three areas. The more recent network 3‐1A clearly discriminates between Western and Eastern European populations. In semelparous populations, dormant germ banks (e.g. seeds) have been proposed as important in maintaining genotypes that are adaptive at different times in fluctuating environments. Such hidden storage of genetic diversity need not be exclusive to dormant banks. Genotype diversity may be preserved in many iteroparous animals through sperm-storage mechanisms in females. We analysed population dynamics of the louse Antarctophthirus microchir in pups of the South American sea lion, Otaria flavescens, at the Punta León rookery (Argentina) over a period of 2 years. A total of 136 pups were aged and marked at the beginning of the lactation period ashore, then sampled for lice at different times within 30 days. Sampling was restricted to the chest and belly, two sites where lice were especially abundant. This concentration on ventral areas might protect lice from thermal stress in the austral summer. Conservation, Spillover and Gene Flow within a Network of Northern European Marine Protected Areas

Microcrustacean and Rotiferan Communities of Two Close Mediterranean Mountain Ponds, Lagunas de Bezas and Rubiales (Spain)

ABSTRACT We compared two freshwater mountain ponds during an annual cycle by focusing on Rotifera and Crustacea. These ponds, Laguna de Bezas and Laguna de Rubiales, are located only 4.5 kilometers apart and share a similar altitude (ca. 1200 m.a.s.1) on the Iberian Mountain range, in Teruel (Spain). Bezas is near-permanent and dries out only in severe droughts; Rubiales is temporary, drying out periodically. They also show important differences in other limnological traits. Hydrodynamism and its influence on the reproductive condition of the edible sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus

Despite the large body of work published in the last two decades on the reproduction of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus, the reproductive aspects linked to hydrodynamic conditions and their influence on gonad production remain poorly understood. The present paper aims to evaluate the effect of hydrodynamism on the reproductive cycle of P. lividus. Variability in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) of P. lividus was estimated seasonally from 2007 to 2008 at two shallow sub-littoral flat basaltic areas at Ustica Island (Western Mediterranean). Impact on the water column biogeochemistry of a Mediterranean mussel and fish farm

We investigated and compared the impact of organic loads due to the biodeposition of mussel and fish farms on the water column of a coastal area of the Tyrrhenian Sea (Western Mediterranean). Physico-chemical data (including oxygen, nutrients, DOC and particulate organic matter), microbial variables (picoplankton and picophytoplankton density and biomass) and phytoplankton biomass (as chlorophyll-a) were determined on a monthly basis from March 1997 to February 1998.
