Statue ritratto "ideali" a Gortina
2018
The paper deals with the category of the “statua - rischen Idealporträts”, treating the few specimens until now recognizable within the large corpus of Roman sculptures collected in the city of Gortyn at Crete. A high-quality example of Hadrianic age was found by Prof. Antonino Di Vita, head of the large scale excavations in the site, during the 1988–1990 field season in the area NW of the “Praetorium”, adjoining the Caput aquae of the Roman aqueduct. Beside this spectacular find, two acephalous torsos of the “Diomedes” type are suitable to have been used for portrait statues, most probably for a couple of emperors. These latter are old surface finds in an area (W of the theatre near the Py…
Una statua togata di retore (?) da Alesa
2017
The paper examines a togated statue found on the site of Halaesa before the start of scientific investigations and carries out a re-contextualization, on the basis of the analysis of iconography, style and antiquarian data, in the bed of middle-imperial portraiture. The…
Families of Two-dimensional Vector Fields
1998
In this section we will consider individual vector fields. They can be considered as 0-parameter families. We assume these vector fields to be of class at least C 1. This will be sufficient to ensure the existence and uniqueness of the flow φ(t, x) (t is time, x ∈ S, the phase space) and the qualitative properties which we mention below.
This Is Not Vivian. The Photographer as a Form of Life
2019
In Semiotics, the notion of form of life seems to be associated to crossing a boundary, be it the one between dimensions of language (usage/rule), between cognitive aspects of a discourse (ethical/aesthetic) or generic dimensions of living (particular/general) in such a way that its own perception (and therefore its heuristic relevance) seems subordinate to the possibility of comparing those that initially appear to us as heterogeneous textualities. In order to detect the form of life it is necessary to go beyond the text, whether this leads to a practice or another text, and therefore a discourse. But is there a possibility that a text does not limit itself to speaking about a form of life…
Existence of a traveling wave solution in a free interface problem with fractional order kinetics
2021
Abstract In this paper we consider a system of two reaction-diffusion equations that models diffusional-thermal combustion with stepwise ignition-temperature kinetics and fractional reaction order 0 α 1 . We turn the free interface problem into a scalar free boundary problem coupled with an integral equation. The main intermediary step is to reduce the scalar problem to the study of a non-Lipschitz vector field in dimension 2. The latter is treated by qualitative topological methods based on the Poincare-Bendixson Theorem. The phase portrait is determined and the existence of a stable manifold at the origin is proved. A significant result is that the settling time to reach the origin is fin…
Un contributo ‘palermitano’ al ciclo giulio-claudio di Centuripe
2021
The Julio-Claudian portraits from Centuripe. A contribution from Palermo · The sculptural group of Julio-Claudian princes from Centuripe (en, Sicily) deserves an in-depth analysis after the recent works by R. Patané, who collected a lot of data and proposed a new interpretation of the whole context. Patané’s proposals are discussed starting from two pieces in the Regional Archaeological Museum “Antonino Salinas” at Palermo. A fragment of a cuirassed statue, discovered in the 19th century near the Chiesa del Crocifisso (that is, near the “Edificio degli Augustali”, at that time not yet discovered), is similar to several fragments belonging to three to six different statues of the Julio-Claud…
Eminentissimae foeminae: la dinastia giulio-claudia vista dalla Sicilia
2019
The paper deals with the portraits of the female members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty that were found in Sicily (Tyndaris, Thermae Himeraeae, Solunto, Centuripe, Syracuse, Catania, ?Lipari) and in the surrounding small islands (Pantelleria/S. Teresa, Malta/Rabat, Gozo/Victoria). In addition to some portrait heads, a series of lesser known pieces, among which several fragments of iconic statues, rather neglected till now, are discussed. Iconography, associations and contexts are considered in order to assess the messages and functions of the statues, and the role these images played in the cultural discourse.
Drusilla sacerdos o diva nella Colonia Augusta Himereorum Thermitanorum?
2018
Among the sculptures of the Museo Civico of Termini Imerese that were published by Nicola Bonacasa in 1960, a female portrait head of a Julio-Claudian princess is remarkable for its excellent workmanship. The paper deals with the problem of the identification of the subject, variously referred to as Agrippina I, Agrippina II, Messalina or Drusilla, according to the interpretation of the portrait series “Glyptothek of Munich 316- Caere” to which the head belongs. The comparanda, some iconographic details giving a certain aura of sanctity to the subject, and the very strong physiognomical resemblance with the likenesses of Caligula confirm the hypothesis that the woman portrayed in the head f…
Premessa
2019
After having isolated and described what he calls "epiphanies of the royal body in the image", replacing the royal body, physical, of some rulers of the Hauteville dynasties (Roger II, William I, William II) and Staufen (Henry VI, Frederick II, Manfredi), which we received through seals in lead and wax and coins, as well as in mosaics, paintings and monumental sculptures (but there is also mention of those lost), in a chronological span that goes from 1130 to 1266, the author assesses them for each visuality, reception and performance, i.e. commission, recipients, mode of use (or non-use) social, sources and models, location.
Ritratti in Sicilia tra Sei e Ottocento
2019
A significant exemplification of portraits of Sicilian aristocrats of the modern age is proposed. Among the late sixteenth-century portraits are those commissioned by Cardinal Ludovico II Torres.Other emblematic portraits, explaining fashion, costum…
