Early modern trade flows between smaller states : the Portuguese-Swedish trade in the eighteenth century as an example

2015

The eighteenth century was a period of many great power wars and competition for colonies. However, despite the turmoil, smaller nations were able to carve their niches in the international trade of the period. Examination of new sources, used in a comparative fashion, indicates that bilateral trade still has much to offer for the analysis of international trade history. The pattern of bilateral trade between Sweden and Portugal indicates that they were not equally dependent on that trade, and that the products traded varied over time. Usually bulk commodities dominated this trade, as each country focused on its core competencies. Overall, the volume of trade and the number of ships travell…

Reactions in Spain to the expulsion of the Jesuits from France

1996

Adeus a Georges Moustaki

2013

Occurrence of fumonisins B1 and B2 in Portuguese maize and maize-based foods intended for human consumption.

2007

Fumonisin B(1) (FB(1)) and fumonisin B(2) (FB(2)) are mycotoxins mainly produced by Fusarium verticillioides and Fusarium proliferatum, which are field pathogens of maize. A survey was conducted on the incidences of FB(1) and FB(2) in both maize and derived products purchased in Portugal. The analytical method involved extraction with methanol-water, clean-up by immunoaffinity column and derivatization with naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde. Determination was carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with spectrofluorimetric detection, with liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) confirmation. The presence of FB(1) and FB(2) was determined in 67 samples of maize an…

The colonization history of Olea europaea L. in Macaronesia based on internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) sequences, randomly amplified polymorphic …

2000

Phylogenetic relationships in the Olea europaea complex and the phylogeography of 24 populations of the Macaronesian olive (O. europaea ssp. cerasiformis) were assessed by using three molecular markers: nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) sequences, randomly amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPD), and intersimple sequence repeats (ISSR). Parsimony analysis of the ITS-1 sequences and Neighbour-joining (NJ) analyses of RAPD and ISSR banding variation revealed four major lineages in the O. europaea complex: (1) ssp. cuspidata; (2) ssp. cerasiformis from Madeira; (3) ssp. laperrinei; and (4) ssp. cerasiformis from the Canary Islands plus ssp. europaea. These results provide unequ…

Differences in gene activity in a Drosophila species cluster belonging to the Obscura group

1993

The polytene chromosome puffing pattern of Drosophila madeirensis was established and compared with those of the related species D. subobscura and D. guanche. A total of 145 loci, active in some of the 12 developmental stages analysed, were described, 38 of which were found to form the puffing pattern characteristic to this species. Taking into account the number of puffs as well as the mean puff expression, D. madeirensis shows a similar activity level to D. guanche, both species being less active than D. subobscura. The low gene activity of D. madeirensis and D. guanche was explained as a consequence of their ecological characteristics.

A chemical status predictor. A methodology based on World-Wide sediment samples.

2015

As a consequence of the limited resources of underdeveloped countries and the limited interest of the developed ones, the assessment of the chemical quality of entire water bodies around the world is a utopia in the near future. The methodology described here may serve as a first approach for the fast identification of water bodies that do not meet the good chemical status demanded by the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). It also allows estimating the natural background (or reference values of concentration) of the areas under study using a simple criterion. The starting point is the calculation the World-Wide Natural Background Levels (WWNBLs) and World-Wide Threshold Values (WWTVs…
