Using simulation to analyze renewables penetration in Brazil

In the new global economy, renewable energy has become a central issue for the competitive. Renewables are the main source of the Brazilian electricity generation sector. This article analyzes the vulnerabilities of hydropower generation and wind power penetration in Brazil. The study presents the results obtained from preliminary analyses of renewable energy’s market penetration in Brazil. Simulation results show the climate variation effects on hydroelectricity generation as well as wind power penetration.

An analysis methodology to evaluate the contribution to electrical security given by bare buried conductors in a system of intertied earthing grids

2004

The paper presents an analysis methodology for a single-line-to-ground fault, occurring at a secondary MV/LV substation in a power network formed by a HV/MV station, feeding, through a MV tri-phase cable line, N MV/LV substations whose earth electrodes are interconnected by bare buried conductors. In the preliminary explanation of the methodology, earth buried conductors are studied in their double function of earth electrodes and connection elements between earthing grids, both in absence and in presence of other interfering conductors. Subsequently analyzed is, with a distributed parameters approach, the system constituted by an earth buried conductor and a MV tri-phase cable line. The eq…

The burnout syndrome and associated personality disturbances. The study in three graduate programs in Dentistry at the University of Barcelona

2008

Objective: Determine the presence of ?burnout? syndrome and characteristic personality patterns in the students and faculty of three graduate programs in Dentistry at the University of Barcelona: Department of Oral Surgery and Implantology, Department of Orthodontics and Department of Integrated Dentistry. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out in 78 dentists. The level of ?burnout? was evaluated using the Maslach Burnout Inventory, socio-demographic variables and, finally, the personality test. Results: Oral surgeons constituted the group of highlevel ?burnout?. The profile of an individual with a propensity to ?burn out? is a single man, with a median age of 27, that is in the f…

Implication of Human Capital in the Development of SMEs through the ICT Adoption

2013

Abstract ICT adoption in SMEs and the attraction of benefits from use of these technologies remains a key point in their development. For an enterprise to take part in the digital economy must have a defined basis for innovative adopting, meaning a premise for the development of ICT infrastructure. Given that firms are not a self-driven machinery, human capital is a major factor of influence in enterprise digitization. Considering this, in this paper will analyze the effects generated by human capital on the level of ICT adoption in SMEs in Romania.

Thermal potential of ion-exchange membranes and its application to thermoelectric power generation

2016

The low efficiency and high price of thermoelectric semiconductors has generated interest in unconventional forms of thermoelectric materials. In this article, ionic thermoelectricity has been studied with commercial ion-exchange membranes for different aqueous 1:1 electrolytes. The theory of thermal membrane potential has been derived taking into account the ionic heats of transport, the non-isothermal Donnan potentials, the temperature polarization, and the thermally-induced concentration polarization of the electrolyte. Also the generated thermoelectric power has been experimentally studied. The experiments show good agreement with the theory, and suggest ways for systematic improvement …

Initial Preparation and Characterization of Single Step Fabricated Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFC)

2013

In this study, facile tape casting process has been successfully carried out to fabricate an unit anode supported intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC) with four different layers: a composite cathode which is a mix of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3 (LSCF48) and Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.9 (GDC10), GDC10 as thin electrolyte layer, NiO-GDC10 without pore former as thin anode functional layer (AFL), and anode support layer of NiO-GDC10 with carbon pore former. The multi-layer was sintered once to produce an unit planar cell. An OCV of 1.002 V at 500 °C, and maximum power density of 466 mW cm–2 at 648 °C are obtained. These results indicate negligible leakage of fuel through electrolyte. Furtherm…

Biomonitoring with cryptogams near the power station of la Robla (Leon, Spain)

2007

The present monitoring study was undertaken to analyze the impact of atmospheric pollution on the lichens found near a power station in northern Spain. Data from 565 releves gathered on 113 sites were analyzed. In areas near the power station the lichen species belong to the Xanthorion community. In areas away from the power station and that are not under the influence of dominant winds, the lichenic diversity increases and the species present belong to the Parmelion community. In intermediate areas between the two, there is a great increase in lichen diversity, in these areas there is a replacement of the species that typically belong to the Xanthorion community, by species typical of the …

On the power of inductive inference from good examples

1993

Abstract The usual information in inductive inference available for the purposes of identifying an unknown recursive function f is the set of all input/output examples (x,f(x)),n eN. In contrast to this approach we show that it is considerably more powerful to work with finite sets of “good” examples even when these good examples are required to be effectively computable. The influence of the underlying numberings, with respect to which the identification has to be realized, to the capabilities of inference from good examples is also investigated. It turns out that nonstandard numberings can be much more powerful than Godel numberings.

An Integrated Assessment Model on Local Aptitudes for Green-Energy Self-sustainability

2018

The Encyclical Letter Laudato Si of the Holy Father Francis on “Care for our Common Home” holds human society responsible for the achievement of a fairer world, through research into solutions to environmental problems and a moderate and efficient use of nonrenewable resources. It recalls that energy usage is one of the major factors of environmental pressure and shares the crucial questions of current European and international energy policies. In Italy, for the electric sector, energy policy requires the increase of energy production by renewable sources and the development of a transmission grid able to support a diffused and non-programmed production of electrical energy (a smart grid),…
