Separation of di-n-propyl ether and n-propyl alcohol by extractive distillation and pressure-swing distillation: Computer simulation and economic opt…
2011
Abstract Azeotropic mixtures are impossible to separate by ordinary distillation. Two of the most common methods for separating a binary homogeneous azeotrope are pressure-swing distillation (PSD) and extractive distillation (ED). The PSD process is effective if the azeotropic composition changes significantly with pressure. The ED process is effective if a suitable solvent can be found. This paper compares these two alternatives to separate a mixture made up of 50 mol% of di-n-propyl ether and 50 mol% of n-propyl alcohol by means of a practical case of a plant to treat 12,000 Tm/year of this mixture. The simulation has been carried out satisfactorily by mean of a package of commercial soft…
Approach to the 1-propanol dehydration using an extractive distillation process with ethylene glycol
2015
Abstract The extractive distillation process exploits the capacity of some chemicals to alter the relative volatility between the components of a mixture. In this way, a third component (called entrainer) may be added to an azeotropic binary mixture to break the azeotrope. This paper discusses the potential use of ethylene glycol as entrainer in a 1-propanol dehydration process by extractive distillation. First, the present work focuses on the acquisition of isobaric vapor–liquid equilibrium data of the ternary system 1-propanol + water + ethylene glycol system and the binaries systems 1-propanol + ethylene glycol and water + ethylene glycol. All measurements were done at 101.3 kPa. The exp…
The Role of Women-Supportive Organizations for Women’s Economic Empowerment in Sri Lanka : A Qualitative Case Study of Rural Women living in Monaraga…
2020
Master's thesis in Global Development and Planning (UT505) This research examines the role and strategies of a women-supportive organisation for women empowerment in Sri Lanka. The selected non-governmental organisation’s mission is to eradicate poverty by empowering grassroots-level women using holistic approaches and participatory development. This research is a qualitative case study by interviewing 41 participants over the telephone after making exploratory field visits in Hambantota and Monaragala districts in Sri Lanka.
A New FEC Scheme for Real-time Transmission of High Definition Video over IP Network
2007
Increasing the applicability of ubiquitous computing, minimizing energy consumption and hardware cost are mandatory in real world applications. In this paper we present our platform prototype for ubiquitous computing, which has been implemented based on commercial Bluetooth off-the-shelf components. It allows every object to be augmented with processing and communication capabilities in order to make them "smart". We validate our proposal by evaluating the trade-off between power consumption and performance of the experimental prototype.
Estimating rainfall erosivity by aggregated drop size distributions
2016
Rainfall erosivity is defined as the potential of the rain to cause erosion, and it can be represented by rainfall kinetic power. At first in this paper, the raindrop size distributions (DSD) measured by an optical disdrometer located at Palermo in the period June 2006–March 2014 and aggregated for intensity classes, are presented. Then an analysis of raindrop size characteristics is carried out, and the reliability of Ulbrich's distribution, using both the maximum likelihood and momentum estimate parameter methods, is tested. The raindrop size measurements are used to determine the experimental rainfall kinetic power values, which are compared with the ones calculated by a theoretically de…
Marketing Research Regarding the Usage of Online Social Networking Sites by High School Students
2013
This paper aims to present the concept of online social networks (OSN) and its evolution in the world of business as well as several important advantages and disadvantages of using online social networking sites. We are presenting a quantitative research on the main reasons for using online networking sites by high schools students from the several counties of Romania. The authors will present the results of the research which underline: the main activities undertaken by students with this new communication tool, the average number of friends the students have and the selection criteria for them as well as the influence level of OSN sites on the life and activity (school and private) of the…
Postmodernity, insecurity and job loss Focus on the unemployed's suffering
2017
International audience; Objectives Recent research shows clear correlations between the subjective perception of job's insecurity and physical, mental and relational health. This article highlights the difficulties of workers , and particularly the impact of uncertainty and job loss on their self-esteem and psycho-physical well-being. The work presents and contextualizes the perception of job insecurity as an effect of postmodern society. Methods The research involved 60 subjects that have lost the jobs and received a 3 month intervention of active policies organized in groups focusing on empowerment and employability. At two times before and after group participants filled in Rosenberg Self…
Researchers' Age, Gender and Professional Status as Indicators of the Twitter Perception in Science Dissemination
2019
Assessment of Energy and Economic Effectiveness of Photovoltaic Systems Operating in a Dense Urban Context
2013
A methodology that permits testing the level of integration of the photovoltaic technology in urban areas is presented. The percentage of coverage of the electricity demand of grid-connected photovoltaic systems installed on the roofs of buildings were investigated in a district of the city of Palermo (Sicily). After classifying roofs according to their shape, orientation and pitch by means of satellite images provided by Google Earth, the ratio of the productivity of the PV systems and the consumption of electricity of the households was analysed. The results of the energy assessment have been screened considering the economic feasibility of grid-connected photovoltaic systems: the energy …
