Radial electron fluence around ion tracks as a new physical parameter for the detection threshold of PADC using Geant4-DNA toolkit
2018
International audience; The detection threshold of poly(allyl dyglycol carbonate), PADC, for C ions is determined as 55 eV/nm in stopping power, which is significantly higher than that for proton and He ions. The stopping power is not a universal parameter for expressing the detection threshold of PADC. A new physical parameter of Radial Electron Fluence around Ion Tracks, REFIT, is proposed to describe the detection threshold of PADC. It is defined as the number density of electrons passing through the surface of a cylinder of a certain radius that is co-axial with the trajectory. Furthermore, preliminary calculations are presently being performed using the Monte Carlo simulation code of G…
Universal soliton pattern formations in passively mode-locked fiber lasers
2011
International audience; We investigate multiple-soliton pattern formations in a figure-of-eight passively mode-locked fiber laser. Operation in the anomalous dispersion regime with a double-clad fiber amplifier allows generation of up to several hundreds of solitons per round trip. We report the observation of remarkable soliton distributions: soliton gas, soliton liquid, soliton polycrystal, and soliton crystal, thus indicating the universality of such complexes.
GENEFISHING: AN ALTERNATE METAGENOMIC APPROACH FOR CAPTURING TARGETED BACTERIAL DIVERSITY IN AN ENGINEERED RECIPIENT E. COLI STRAIN
2009
International audience; The metagenomic approach, defined as the direct recovery and cloning of bacterial DNA from the environment in domesticated bacterial hosts has been widely used to study bacterial populations and their functional genes in numerous environments. The advantage of this approach over conventional culture based techniques is that it encompasses a wider range of bacteria by bypassing the bias of uncultivability of more than 99% of the bacteria in soil. However, in complex and rich environments such as soils, the huge level of bacterial diversity requires construction, handling and screening of several million clones in order to cover a significant proportion of bacterial ge…

Observation of the suppression of the flux of cosmic rays above 4x10^19eV
2008
The energy spectrum of cosmic rays above 2.5 × 10¹⁸ eV, derived from 20,000 events recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory, is described. The spectral index γ of the particle flux, J ∝ E-γ, at energies between 4 × 10¹⁸ eV and 4 × 10¹⁹ eV is 2.69 ± 0.02(stat) ± 0.06(syst), steepening to 4.2 ± 0.4(stat) ± 0.06(syst) at higher energies. The hypothesis of a single power law is rejected with a significance greater than 6 standard deviations. The data are consistent with the prediction by Greisen and by Zatsepin and Kuz'min.

Perception of a blending odor mixture: an fMRI study in humans
2012
Supported by grants from the Burgundy Regional council and EU-ERDF, European Dijon-Dresden Laboratory (LEA 549); Odors we perceive from our environment arise from the processing of mixtures of odorants. Some mixtures can lead to configural or elemental perception depending, in part, on experience. However, the neural bases of such influences are still unknown. In the present study, we examined the neurophysiological correlates of the configural and elemental processing of a binary odor mixture (AB). This AB mixture has previously been shown to blend into one percept, but also to produce a more or less configural perception depending on pre-exposure to either the mixture itself or to the sin…
