Posterior meniscal root repair: a biomechanical comparison between human and porcine menisci

2019

The aim of the present study was to compare the biomechanical characteristics of posterior meniscal root repair of porcine and human menisci. Methods. In vitro biomechanical testing was performed using 12 porcine menisci and 12 human menisci. All menisci were sectioned at the midpoint of their circumference and mounted on an electro-mechanic testing machine. The posterior root was sutured with three single stitches using a no. 2 non-absorbable suture. All specimens were subjected to cyclic axial loading followed by load-to-failure testing. Displacements were recorded at the conclusion of cycles 1, 100, 500 and 1000. Further, load-displacement curves of each specimen were recorded and analyz…

Guidance to 2018 good practice: ARIA digitally-enabled, integrated, person-centred care for rhinitis and asthma

2019

AIMS: Mobile Airways Sentinel NetworK (MASK) belongs to the Fondation Partenariale MACVIA-LR of Montpellier, France and aims to provide an active and healthy life to rhinitis sufferers and to those with asthma multimorbidity across the life cycle, whatever their gender or socio-economic status, in order to reduce health and social inequities incurred by the disease and to improve the digital transformation of health and care. The ultimate goal is to change the management strategy in chronic diseases. METHODS: MASK implements ICT technologies for individualized and predictive medicine to develop novel care pathways by a multi-disciplinary group centred around the patients. STAKEHOLDERS: Incl…

Socs3 induction by PPARγ restrains cancer-promoting inflammation

2013

The presence of proinflammatory cytokines in the tumor microenvironment can support further growth of established cancers. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARγ) ligand, has been shown to suppress inflammation and limit tumor progression in vivo. Are the anticancer properties of DHA relying on its ability to prevent inflammation? If so, what are the molecular links between the anti-inflammatory properties of DHA and its anticancer effects? DHA is an n-3 polyinsaturated fatty acid mainly found in fish oil that was shown to contribute to inflammation resolution by preventing the release of proinflammatory mediators in vivo.1 DHA has also been as…

Direct interaction of the Usher syndrome 1G protein SANS and myomegalin in the retina

2011

Contains fulltext : 96822.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) The human Usher syndrome (USH) is the most frequent cause of combined hereditary deaf-blindness. USH is genetically heterogeneous with at least 11 chromosomal loci assigned to 3 clinical types, USH1-3. We have previously demonstrated that all USH1 and 2 proteins in the eye and the inner ear are organized into protein networks by scaffold proteins. This has contributed essentially to our current understanding of the function of USH proteins and explains why defects in proteins of different families cause very similar phenotypes. We have previously shown that the USH1G protein SANS (scaffold protein containing ankyrin repeat…

Towards a mean body for apparel design

2016

This paper focuses on shape average with applications to the apparel industry. Apparel industry uses a consensus sizing system; its major concern is to fit most of the population into it. Since anthropometric measures do not grow linearly, it is important to find prototypes to accurately represent each size. This is done using random compact mean sets, obtained from a cloud of 3D points given by a scanner and applying to the sample a previous definition of mean set. Additionally, two approaches to define confidence sets are introduced. The methodology is applied to data obtained from a real anthropometric survey. This paper has been partially supported by the following grants: TIN2009-14392…

The apparent losses due to metering errors: a proactive approach to predict losses and schedule maintenance

2014

The effects of water meter age and private tanks on the apparent losses due to metering errors were evaluated by experimental and theoretical analyses. A monitoring campaign on a small district metered area (DMA) was carried out to determine the causes of apparent losses and implement a numerical model. Metering errors are affected by the flow rate passing through the meter, which is dependent on the network pressure and water level of the private tank. A node model that reproduces the effect of private tanks was coupled with EPANET and was applied to the DMA. The proposed modelling approach was used to identify where apparent losses are higher and to schedule maintenance. The model predict…
