Peripapillary staphyloma associated with morning glory anomaly,

We report a patient with concomitant occurrence of peripapillary staphyloma and morning glory anomaly. The morning glory anomaly presented with an optic nerve head with oblique entrance, located on one side of the peripapillary staphyloma, giving an unusually asymmetric and previously undescribed appearance to the abnormality. The optical coherence tomography provided useful information about the shape and deepness of the peripapillary staphyloma and disclosed a retinal detachment not appreciated ophthalmoscopically.

Synthesis of benzopyran derivatives as PPARα and/ or PPARγ activators

International audience; We describe the synthesis of 26 compounds, small polycerasoidol analogs, that are Lipinski’s rule-of-five compliant. In order to confirm key structural features to activate PPARα and/or PPARγ, we have adopted structural modifications in the following parts: (i) the benzopyran core (hydrophobic nucleus) by benzopyran-4-one, dihydrobenzopyran or benzopyran-4-ol; (ii) the side chain at 2-position by shortening to C3, C4 and C5-carbons versus C-9-carbons of polycerasoidol; (iii) the carboxylic group (polar head) by oxygenated groups (hydroxyl, acetoxy, epoxide, ester, aldehyde) or non-oxygenated motifs (allyl and alkyl). Molecular Mechanisms Controlling the Self-Assembly Process of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

The distance dependent interaction between polyelectrolyte-covered mica surfaces in aqueous solution was investigated with the surface forces apparatus. We find the following:  (i) The surface charge changes sign, when an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte from a concentrated polyelectrolyte solution is adsorbed. (ii) Tails and loops of the adsorbed polyions dangle into the bulk phase, inducing a small steric force. If polycations and poyanions are adsorbed on top of each other, a strong short range attractive force is seen due to ion-pair formation after crossing a large repulsive electrostatic/steric barrier. 4-4-20 anti-fluorescyl IgG Fab' recognition of membrane bound hapten: direct evidence for the role of protein and interfacial structure.

The surface forces apparatus was used to identify the molecular forces that control the interactions of monoclonal 4-4-20 antifluorescyl IgG Fab' fragments with fluorescein-presenting supported planar bilayers. At long range, the electrostatic force between oriented Fab' and fluorescein monolayers was controlled by the composition of the protein exterior surrounding the antigen-combining site rather than by the overall protein charge. Hic situs Emmanuel, plangite Sicelides. Le esequie reali di Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia nella cattedrale di Palermo

Lo studio prende le mosse dal ritrovamento presso la Biblioteca Nacional de España di una rara incisione seicentesca raffigurante le esequie solenni del giovane viceré Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, celebrate a Palermo il 26 e 27 agosto del 1624 con la realizzazione di complessi apparati effimeri e la costruzione di un monumentale catafalco, per il quale si propongono adesso nuove ipotesi attributive. La stampa si rivela essere la più antica raffigurazione oggi nota dell'interno della cattedrale palermitana, acquisendo così un innegabile valore di testimonianza iconografica per lo studio e delle architetture effimere in ambiente ispanico e del tempio normanno nella sua perduta configurazione.

Molecular mechanisms determining the strength of receptor-mediated intermembrane adhesion

The strength of receptor-mediated cell adhesion is directly controlled by the mechanism of cohesive failure between the cell surface and underlying substrate. Unbinding can occur either at the locus of the specific bond or within the bilayer, which results in tearing the hydrophobic anchors from the membrane interior. In this work, the surface force apparatus has been used to investigate the relationship between the receptor-ligand bond affinities and the dominant mechanism of receptor-coupled membrane detachment. Specific Protein Binding to Functionalized Interfaces

We report on the characterization of specific binding reactions between streptavidin and biotinylated model membrane surfaces. Self-assembly techniques as well as the Langmuir-Blodgett-Kuhn method were employed to prepare reactive, functionalized surfaces on various solid supports in contact with the aqueous protein solution. Ligand-receptor interactions directly measured with the surface forces apparatus

1991

Ligand-receptor interactions give rise to very strong bonds due to perfect geometrical fit. Using the Surface Forces Apparatus we have studied the interactions between membrane-bound biotin ligands and streptavidin receptors. We find an unusually strong short-range binding force associated with equally specific molecular rearrangements-both qualitatively and quantitatively unlike anything previously measured.
