Heredity and obesity-associated hypertension: impact of hormonal characteristics and left ventricular mass. J Hypertens

1995

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of heredity on obesity-associated hypertension, we evaluated casual and 24-h blood pressure, left ventricular mass and some metabolic and hormonal measurements in normotensive obese subjects. DESIGN: Healthy, normotensive obese subjects (n = 81) with positive or negative family history of hypertension were studied. Both groups were also subdivided according to a positive or a negative family history of obesity. Accordingly, 45 obese subjects had a positive family history of hypertension, 25 of these having a positive (subgroup A) and 20 having a negative family history of obesity (subgroup B). The other 36 obese subjects had a negative family history…

Impact of obstructive sleep apnea on metabolic dysfunction in severe obesity.

2011

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) seems to worsen metabolism. This effect has not evaluated in morbid obesity (MO). We hypothesized that the metabolic profile is more impaired in MO patients with OSA than in those without and investigated whether any specific metabolic dysfunction is related to OSA in MO. A prospective multi-centre cross-sectional study was conducted in consecutive subjects before bariatric surgery. OSA was defined as apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI)≥15 by overnight polysomnography (PSG). Anthropometrical, blood pressure (BP) and fasting blood measurements were obtained the morning after. Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) was defined according to NCEP ATPIII modified criteria. 159 patient…

A taxonomic revision of the Capparis spinosa group (Capparaceae) from eastern Africa to Oceania

2015

The variability, autecology and distribution of the Capparis spinosa group have been studied in eastern Africa, Madagascar, southern Asia, Australia and Oceania. In these areas the taxonomic treatment of the group, also represented in holoarctic Regions of the Old World, is still critical. The forms widespread in the study area are here referred to four subspecies of C. spinosa . The recognized subspecies mostly show geographical vicariance, except in some contact areas of the Middle East and western Himalaya. Two nomenclatural novelties, i. e. C. spinosa subsp. cordifolia comb. et stat. nov. and C. spinosa subsp. himalayensis stat. nov., are proposed. Among the recognized taxa, C. spinosa …

Diffusion-weighted imaging in oncology: An update

2020

To date, diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) is included in routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocols for several cancers. The real additive role of DWI lies in the “functional” information obtained by probing the free diffusivity of water molecules into intra and inter-cellular spaces that in tumors mainly depend on cellularity. Although DWI has not gained much space in some oncologic scenarios, this non-invasive tool is routinely used in clinical practice and still remains a hot research topic: it has been tested in almost all cancers to differentiate malignant from benign lesions, to distinguish different malignant histotypes or tumor grades, to predict and/or assess treatment resp…

Thinking about ophthalmology in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic

2020

There is no part of the health care system that has remained unscathed by the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of its organizational, scientific or medical models. The surgical specialities were called upon to analyse the concepts of urgency and deferrable, reconsider the procedures and the times for those, and to evaluate new and specific strategies for the remote and safe management of patients. The aim of this paper is to evaluate new and different approaches in the field of ophthalmology triggered by the COVID-19 emergency. We analysed literature and on line documents; key words for the research were: SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19, ophthalmology, ophthalmologist, eye, guidelines, and their combination…

Image processing applications in object detection and graph matching : from Matlab development to GPU framework

2020

Automatically finding correspondences between object features in images is of main interest for several applications, as object detection and tracking, flow velocity estimation, identification, registration, and many derived tasks. In this thesis, we address feature correspondence within the general framework of graph matching optimization and with the principal aim to contribute, at a final step, to the design of new and parallel algorithms and their implementation on GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) systems. Graph matching problems can have many declinations, depending on the assumptions of the application at hand. We observed a gap between applications based on local cost objective functio…

Characterization of the immune cells response and ultrastructural study of dendritic cell Golgi Apparatus role in ORF virus infection

2014

Contagious Ecthyma is an acute skin anthropozoonosis caused by orf virus (ORFV), which affects sheep and goat. The infectious agent is an epitheliotropic, double- stranded DNA poxvirus. Infection happens via the hurt skin, and causes a localized virus production in the epidermal cells and keratinocytes. This paper characterize the cellular immune response by cytochemistry in ORFV infection and studies the role of Golgi Apparatus (GA) of keratinocytes by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and 3D models. Twenty cutaneous biopsies in sheep from ORFV infected lesions were fixed in 10% formalin and embedded in paraffin for light microscopy. Paraffin sections were immunocytochemically stained…
