Water-level fluctuations in Mediterranean reservoirs: Setting a dewatering threshold as a management tool to improve water quality

2005

Water-level fluctuations, often linked to seasonal climatic trends, are a natural phenomenon which occur in almost all aquatic ecosystems. In some climatic regions, as the Mediterranean one, they are particularly wide due to the occurrence of two well separated periods: the rainy winter and the almost completely dry summer. Precipitation is concentrated in the first period, whereas in the second strong evaporation losses take place. According to these climatic features, and to ensure a continuous supply of water throughout the year, man-made lakes store water during winter and are subjected to dewatering during summer to compensate the lack of precipitation. These ecosystems are thus charac…

Stochastic assessment of climate impacts on hydrology and geomorphology of semiarid headwater basins using a physically based model

2015

Hydrologic and geomorphic responses of watersheds to changes in climate are difficult to assess due to projection uncertainties and nonlinearity of the processes that are involved. Yet such assessments are increasingly needed and call for mechanistic approaches within a probabilistic framework. This study employs an integrated hydrology-geomorphology model, the Triangulated Irregular Network-based Real-time Integrated Basin Simulator (tRIBS)-Erosion, to analyze runoff and erosion sensitivity of seven semiarid headwater basins to projected climate conditions. The Advanced Weather Generator is used to produce two climate ensembles representative of the historic and future climate conditions f…

Post-fire hydrological response and suspended sediment transport of a terraced Mediterranean catchment

2017

In July 2013, a wildfire severely affected the western part of the island of Mallorca (Spain). During the first three post-fire hydrological years, when the window of disturbance tends to be more open, the hydrological and sediment delivery processes and dynamics were assessed in a representative catchment intensively shaped by terracing that covered 37% of its surface area. A nested approach was applied with two gauging stations (covering 1.2 km2 and 4.8 km2) built in September 2013 that took continuous measurements of rainfall, water and sediment yield. Average Suspended Sediment Concentration (1,503 mg l-1) and the maximum peak (33,618 mg l-1) were two orders of magnitude higher than tho…

Carbon isotope exchange between gaseous CO2 and thin solution films: Artificial cave experiments and a complete diffusion-reaction model

2017

Abstract Speleothem stable carbon isotope (δ 13 C) records provide important paleoclimate and paleo-environmental information. However, the interpretation of these records in terms of past climate or environmental change remains challenging because of various processes affecting the δ 13 C signals. A process that has only been sparsely discussed so far is carbon isotope exchange between the gaseous CO 2 of the cave atmosphere and the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) contained in the thin solution film on the speleothem, which may be particularly important for strongly ventilated caves. Here we present a novel, complete reaction diffusion model describing carbon isotope exchange between gase…

Evaluation of the environmental impact of volcanic emissions from the chemistry of rainwater: Mount Etna area (Sicily)

2001

Abstract The S, halogen and NO 3 contents of rainwater samples from the Etnean area were studied in order to define the environmental impact of plume emissions on the local environment. Samples, collected on a network of 11 bulk rain gauges, show significant variability in anion content, which can be ascribed to different meteorological and environmental conditions at each sampling site and to a variable distance from the different source areas. Data analysis suggests that S, F, Cl and Br are mainly magma-derived, whereas NO 3 mainly originates from anthropogenic sources. Samples collected from sites close to craters display considerable temporal variability, with increased anion concentrat…

Design, construction and operational results of a pilot plant for the treatment and valorization of pickling waste solutions

2021

An innovative hybrid technology for both minimizing the waste production and optimizing the pickling process through the continuous control of pickling baths composition has been proposed by means of a pilot-plant installed at the Tecnozinco Srl, Carini (PA) hot-dip galvanizing plant. The recovery process has been accomplished by coupling a diffusion dialysis (DD), where HCl is recovered, a membrane distillation (MD), where HCl is concentrated, and a reactive precipitation (RP), where metal ions are recovered as iron hydroxide and ammonium/zinc chloride solution, to be used in the fluxing baths of the plant. The pilot plant was commissioned and operated using synthetic HCl solutions first a…

Microradiography and confocal laser scanning microscopy applied to enamel lesions formed in vivo with and without fluoride varnish treatment

1996

The aim of the present investigation was to combine 2 techniques suitable for lesion characterization: quantitative microradiography (TMR) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) on in vivo induced lesions with and without a fluoride varnish (Duraphat(R)) treatment. Orthodontic bands were attached to premolars to be extracted for orthodontic reasons to induce enamel caries on the buccal surfaces. In the caries development part of the study, 1 tooth of each pair received at the start 1 topical application with the fluoride varnish Duraphat(R), the contralateral tooth serving as untreated control. All teeth were extracted after 4 weeks. In the caries progression part, the premolars were…

Moisture source in the Hyblean mountains region (south-eastern Sicily,Italy):Evidence from stable isotopes signature

2006

Abstract Here the authors present results of an isotope study on precipitation collected during a 2-a period from a rain-gauge network consisting of 6 stations located at different elevations in the Hyblean Mountains (HM) region, in south-eastern Sicily. The slope of the local meteoric water line ( δD  = 6.50 δ 18 O + 9.87) obtained for the region suggests that precipitation is affected by evaporation during rainfall events. The main variations in rainwater isotope composition are due to seasonal effects and elevation. An average 2 H excess value of +21.2‰ was found for precipitation events less affected by evaporation (i.e. when the rainfall was >65 mm/month). The spatial distribution of O…

Magnetic Properties of Ni II Cr III Layered Double Hydroxide Materials

2008

This paper describes the isolation of four layered double hydroxide (LDH) compounds having the general formula[NiII3–xCrIIIx(OH)6](CO3)x/2·yH2O [x = 0.57 (1), 0.69 (2), 0.81 (3) and 0.93 (4)] by using homogeneous precipitation methods and varying the metal ratio in the synthetic solutions. All the reported compounds have carbonate anions in the interlamellar space. This fact forces the interlayer distances to remain unchanged in all the cases, thus providing an ideal system in which the changes observed in magnetic properties can be correlated with metal composition along the hydroxide layers.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Novel Paraoxonase 2-Dependent Mechanism Mediating the Biological Effects of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa Quorum-Sensing Molecule N-(3-Oxo-Dodecanoyl)-l…

2015

ABSTRACT Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces N -(3-oxo-dodecanoyl)- l -homoserine lactone (3OC12), a crucial signaling molecule that elicits diverse biological responses in host cells thought to subvert immune defenses. The mechanism mediating many of these responses remains unknown. The intracellular lactonase paraoxonase 2 (PON2) hydrolyzes and inactivates 3OC12 and is therefore considered a component of host cells that attenuates 3OC12-mediated responses. Here, we demonstrate in cell lines and in primary human bronchial epithelial cells that 3OC12 is rapidly hydrolyzed intracellularly by PON2 to 3OC12 acid, which becomes trapped and accumulates within the cells. Subcellularly, 3OC12 acid acc…
