The last glacial cycle in Central Europe is dominated by processes of aeolian dust transport and accumulation. These dust deposits are preserved in soils and lake sediments and provide detailed information about the climate variability during cold and dry periods. Especially the transitions from warm into cold periods are characterized by turbulent climate conditions. The main problems of terrestrial paleoclimate reconstructions are the completeness of the core material and a sampling resolution. During the last twelve years the ELSA Project (Eifel Laminated Sediment Archive) at Mainz University has drilled a total of about 52 cores from 27 maar lakes and filled-in maar basins in the Eifel/Germany. Dating has been completed for the Holocene cores using 6 different methods (210Pb and 137Cs activities, palynostratigraphy, event markers, varve counting, 14C). In general, the different methods consistently complement one another within error margins. Event correlation was used for relating typical lithological changes with historically known events such as the two major Holocene flood events at 1342 AD and ca 800 BC. Pielāgojot literatūrā aprakstītas metodes, darbā izpētīti gāzu hromatogrāfiskās analīzes apstākļi, lai identificētu īso ķēžu taukskābes bioloģiskos paraugos. Eksperimentālajā daļā noteikta etiķskābes, propionskābes un butānskābes koncentrācija fermentācijas barotnēs ar gāzu hromatogrāfiju, detektēšanai izmantojot liesmas jonizācijas detektoru.
Search for Extraterrestrial Point Sources of Neutrinos with AMANDA-II

We present the results of a search for point sources of high energy neutrinos in the northern hemisphere using AMANDA-II data collected in the year 2000. Included are flux limits on several AGN blazars, microquasars, magnetars and other candidate neutrino sources. A search for excesses above a random background of cosmic-ray-induced atmospheric neutrinos and misreconstructed downgoing cosmic-ray muons reveals no statistically significant neutrino point sources. We show that AMANDA-II has achieved the sensitivity required to probe known TeV gamma-ray sources such as the blazar Markarian 501 in its 1997 flaring state at a level where neutrino and gamma-ray fluxes are equal.
Safety and immunomodulatory effects of three probiotic strains isolated from the feces of breast-fed infants in healthy adults: SETOPROB study.

We previously described the isolation and characterization of three probiotic strains from the feces of exclusively breast-fed newborn infants: Lactobacillus paracasei CNCM I-4034, Bifidobacterium breve CNCM I-4035 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus CNCM I-4036. These strains were shown to adhere to intestinal mucus in vitro, to be sensitive to antibiotics and to resist biliary salts and low pH. In the present study, a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 100 healthy volunteers in three Spanish cities was carried out to evaluate the tolerance, safety, gut colonization and immunomodulatory effects of these three probiotics. Maģistra darbā „Apgrūtināto teritoriju informācijas sistēmas ieviešana Latvijā” aplūkoti Apgrūtināto teritoriju informācijas sistēmas (turpmāk - ATIS) izveidošanas un ieviešanas Latvijā tiesiskie un praktiskie aspekti, kā arī analizēta nekustamo īpašumu lietošanas tiesību apgrūtinājumu reģistrācijas kārtība pirms un pēc ATIS ieviešanas. Analīzes rezultātā identificēti problēmjautājumi un sniegts piedāvājums to risinājumam. Darbā analizēts normatīvais regulējums, kas reglamentē ATIS darbību. Veicot normatīvā regulējuma un juridiskās prakses analīzi, autore aplūkojusi arī Latvijā ar likumu noteiktos nekustamo īpašumu lietošanas tiesību aprobežojumus.
Predictive distributions that mimic frequencies over a restricted subdomain

A predictive distribution over a sequence of $$N+1$$ events is said to be “frequency mimicking” whenever the probability for the final event conditioned on the outcome of the first N events equals the relative frequency of successes among them. Exchangeable distributions that exhibit this feature universally are known to have several annoying concomitant properties. We motivate frequency mimicking assertions over a limited subdomain in practical problems of finite inference, and we identify their computable coherent implications. In the physical education (PE) teachers’ profession, physical tasks comprise a large part of the job. PE teachers identify their health as good, and they are satisfied with their job. Nevertheless, the work ability of PE teachers may be decreasing. Purpose: The purpose of this article was to explore the work ability of Finnish PE teachers. What disorders or physical problems do PE teachers experience as a result of their job, and how do they affect job satisfaction? Are there differences between men and women or older and younger teachers?
