Racemic and Optically Pure Heptahelicene-2-carboxylic Acid: Its Synthesis and Self-Assembly into Nanowire-Like Aggregates

2010

Heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid was effectively synthesised from suitably functionalised naphthalene building blocks. Methoxy-substituted 1,1'-ethyne-1,2-diylbis(2-but-3-yn-1-ylnaphthalene) was cyclised in the presence of CpCo(CO)(2)/PPh(3) to 2-methoxy-7,8,11,12-tetrahydroheptahelicene, which was converted into heptahelicen-2-yl trifluoromethanesulfonate. This reactive intermediate underwent Pd(OAc)(2)/dppp-catalysed methoxycarbonylation reaction to provide, after hydrolysis, heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid. The racemate was resolved into enantiomers by semipreparative HPLC on a chiral column. The helicity of (+)-(P)-heptahelicene-2-carboxylic acid was assigned by correlating its CD spectr…

Synthesis of a quenchable high-pressure form of magnetite (h-Fe3O4) with composition Fe1(Fe2+0.75Mg0.26)Fe2(Fe3+0.70Cr0.15Al0.11Si0.04)2O4

2014

We report the synthesis of h-magnetite, ideally h-Fe 3 O 4 with considerable amounts of substitutional cations (Cr, Mg, Al, Si) and quenchable to ambient conditions. Two types of experiments were performed at 18 GPa and 1800 °C in a multi-anvil press. In one, we used an oxide mixture with a majoritic stoichiometry Mg 1.8 Fe 1.2 (Al 1.4 Cr 0.2 Si 0.2 Mg 0.2 )Si 3 O 12 , with Si and Mg in excess as starting material (MA-367, MA-380). In the second type of experiment (MA-376), we started from an oxide mixture on the composition of the Fe-oxide phase obtained in MA-367. The Fe-oxide phases of both experiments were investigated by electron microprobe and transmission electron microscopy includin…

ChemInform Abstract: Fluorescent Chemosensors Containing Polyamine Receptors

2000

Chemosensors have attracted interest in many different scientific fields, such as environmental chemistry, medicine, and the processing and storage of information. These molecular-scale devices have the advantage of working on the same spatial scale as the chemical structures that are responsible for macroscopic behaviour observed in the environment or those associated with health problems. Moreover, they allow the construction of molecular-scale devices for information storage. In this review, we describe a family of chemosensors based on a polyamine receptor and a fluorescent signalling unit. Polyamine receptors are water-soluble ambidentate receptors; they are able to coordinate either m…

PUNAS: A Parallel Ungapped-Alignment-Featured Seed Verification Algorithm for Next-Generation Sequencing Read Alignment

2017

The progress of next-generation sequencing has a major impact on medical and genomic research. This technology can now produce billions of short DNA fragments (reads) in a single run. One of the most demanding computational problems used by almost every sequencing pipeline is short-read alignment; i.e. determining where each fragment originated from in the original genome. Most current solutions are based on a seed-and-extend approach, where promising candidate regions (seeds) are first identified and subsequently extended in order to verify whether a full high-scoring alignment actually exists in the vicinity of each seed. Seed verification is the main bottleneck in many state-of-the-art a…

A New pH-Dependent Macrocyclic Rhodamine B-Based Fluorescent Probe for Copper Detection in White Wine

2019

For efficiently measuring copper (II) ions in the acidic media of white wine, a new chemosensor based on rhodamine B coupled to a tetraazamacrocyclic ring (13aneN4CH2NH2) was designed and synthesized by a one-pot reaction using ethanol as a green solvent. The obtained chemosensor was characterized via NMR, UV and fluorescent spectra. It was marked with no color emission under neutral pH conditions, with a pink color emission under acidic conditions, and a magenta color emission under acidic conditions where copper (II) ions were present. The sensitivity towards copper (II) ions was tested and verified over Ca2+, Ag+, Zn2+, Mg2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Fe3+, and Mn2+, with a detection…

The moderating effect of attachment styles on the relationships between maltreatment experiences and internalizing and externalizing problems among a…

2020

Multiple studies have documented the relationship between child maltreatment and internalizing and externalizing problems. Evidence suggests that the link between child maltreatment and these psychopathological outcomes may be moderated by various factors. Attachment styles may be one such moderating factor in this relationship. This study seeks to explore whether different attachment style profiles are associated with different forms of maltreatment as well as internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and whether attachment styles may moderate the link between different forms of maltreatment and internalizing and externalizing problems. For this purpose, 387 students from Italian public hi…

The role of executive function in social competence and behavioral problems in the last year of preschool

2018

Diverse studies have found a relationship between executive function, behavioral problems and social competence. However, until this moment, few studies have investigated the role of the distinct components of executive function in social competence, or in the most frequently encountered behavioral problems in childhood education. For this reason, the principal objective of this article is to evaluate the relation of the exec-utive functions with behavioral problems and social competence in infancy. The study included 260 students in their last year of preschool. The results of path analysis showed that all components of executive functions predict, at least, a behavioral problem. However, …

Amphibian survival compromised by long-term effects of chytrid fungus

2022

AbstractChytridiomycosis, the disease caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has been unambiguously implicated in the decline of amphibian populations worldwide. However, the impact of this devastating infectious disease can be difficult to gauge without empirical data on the population-level effects of Bd. Often, assessments of the amphibian chytridiomycosis panzootic are based primarily on expert opinions; as a result, declines in tropical areas are promptly attributed to Bd while its impact on temperate species not suffering from adult mass mortalities is frequently overlooked. Here, we investigated the survival probability in an amphibian species from a tempe…

Emergent ultrafast phenomena in correlated oxides and heterostructures

2017

The possibility of investigating the dynamics of solids on timescales faster than the thermalization of the internal degrees of freedom has disclosed novel non-equilibrium phenomena that have no counterpart at equilibrium. Transition metal oxides (TMOs) provide an interesting playground in which the correlations among the charges in the metal $d$-orbitals give rise to a wealth of intriguing electronic and thermodynamic properties involving the spin, charge, lattice and orbital orders. Furthermore, the physical properties of TMOs can be engineered at the atomic level, thus providing the platform to investigate the transport phenomena on timescales of the order of the intrinsic decoherence ti…

ALIGNEMENT UNI ET TRIDIMENSIONNEL DE MOLÉCULES PAR IMPULSION LASER FEMTOSECONDE

2007

This thesis is devoted to the study of the alignment of linear and asymmetric top molecules generated by an intense laser pulse. In the case of short pulses with respect to molecular rotation, periodic alignment appears in field-free conditions after the extinction of the field. We study theoretically and experimentally the effects of intensity, temperature and polarization of the electric field on produced alignment. If the field is linearly polarized, the interaction leads to the alignment of the most polarizable axis of the molecule. If the field is elliptically polarized, the pulse can generate a simultaneous alignment of the three principal axes of inertia of an asymmetric top molecule…
