An experimental investigation on natural convection of air in a vertical channel

1993

Abstract The free convection of air in a vertical channel is studied experimentally in a laboratory model of height H = 2.6 m and rectangular cross-section b × s , with b = 1.2 m and the channel width s variable. One of the channel walls is heated with a uniform heat flux. Tests are made with different values of channel gap and heating power ( s = 7.5, 12.5, 17 cm; q c = 48–317 W m −2 ). On the basis of the results two empirical formulae are found, giving Nu and Re as functions of Ra and the geometrical parameter s/H ; Nu = 0.9282 Ra 0.2035 (s/H) 0.8972 ; Re = 0.5014 Ra 0.3148 (s/H) 0.418 . The mathematical form of these relationships reproduces other previously published formulae, valid fo…

Heat and work fluxes in thermoelectric coolers

2021

Abstract Thermodynamics considers heat and work as the observables of energy. Then, in a non-equilibrium process, the fluxes of heat, work and energy are related. The expressions for the heat and energy flux densities are well known; although several conventions have been adopted. The work flux density defined from the heat and energy flux densities can be very useful in describing the energy balance when chosen to emphasize observable quantities. This paper discusses the advantages of the use of the conduction heat flux density given by Fourier’s law and a work flux density defined from it. As a case study, heat and work fluxes are evaluated in the elements of a thermoelectric cooler using…

Constraints on the spatial variation of Planck constant

2021

AbstractInspired by recently published researches, we present two protocols for setting an upper limit to the claimed variation of$$\hbar $$ħupon the position. The protocols, both within today state of art, involve the use of two delayed laser pulses driving an atom. The distinct positions of the laboratory, due to the Earth motion, affects$$\hbar $$ħand hence the atomic dynamics. The first protocol measures the difference in population of the atomic ground state while the second one the red-shift of the harmonics emitted by the atom in the two moments of the experiment. The protocols improve the reported upper limit of$$\varDelta \hbar /\hbar $$Δħ/ħ. The theory shows that$$\hbar (\varvec{r…

Analysis of a severe pollution episode in Valencia (Spain) and its effect on ground level particulate matter

2013

Abstract This study analyzes the atmospheric particles concentration at ground level during a severe pollution event that took place in Valencia (Spain) from 7 to 12 February 2011. The episode was related to a subtropical anticyclone system that affected the Iberian Peninsula and western Europe. The dominant anticyclone imposed an extended low gradient pressure system and a low mixing layer height in the region that caused the accumulation of pollutants over the western Mediterranean. Moreover, the stagnant conditions led to the formation of the local sea breeze, accompanied by an increase of relative humidity and the decrease of ambient temperature. Our study is mainly focused on the analy…

Investigation of flow and heat transfer in corrugated passages—I. Experimental results

1996

Abstract An experimental and numerical study of flow and heat transfer was conducted for a crossed-corrugated geometry, representative of compact heat exchangers including air preheaters for fossil-fuelled power plant. In this paper, we describe the method of applying thermochromic liquid crystals and true-colour image processing to give local Nusselt number distribution over the surface, and average Nu, both of quantitative reliability; a careful uncertainty analysis is also presented. Typical experimental results for heat transfer and pressure drop are presented and discussed for various geometries and Reynolds numbers, and are compared with literature data. Numerical predictions are disc…

Enhancement of heat exchanger thermal hydraulic performance using aluminum foam

2018

Abstract This paper deals with an experimental study of a turbulent forced convection in a rectangular channel partly fitted with aluminum metallic foam blocks. Experiments were carried out on samples having a constant porosity of 93.8%, different grades of 5, 20 and 40 PPI, and three different height ratios of 0.6, 0.8 and 1. The blocks were arranged in a baffle like configuration. A constant heat flux of 2 W/cm2 was applied on the bottom wall of the test section, while air velocity was varied from 1 to 5 m·s−1. Temperatures of the wall along the flow direction as well as those of the inlet and outlet sections have been measured. Additionally, pressure drop measurements across the aluminum…

Ab Initio Phase Diagram of Chromium to 2.5 TPa

2022

Chromium possesses remarkable physical properties such as hardness and corrosion resistance. Chromium is also a very important geophysical material as it is assumed that lighter Cr isotopes were dissolved in the Earth’s molten core during the planet’s formation, which makes Cr one of the main constituents of the Earth’s core. Unfortunately, Cr has remained one of the least studied 3d transition metals. In a very recent combined experimental and theoretical study (Anzellini et al., Scientific Reports, 2022), the equation of state and melting curve of chromium were studied to 150 GPa, and it was determined that the ambient body-centered cubic (bcc) phase of crystalline Cr re…

Ventricular Fibrillation and Tachycardia Detection Using Features Derived from Topological Data Analysis

2022

A rapid and accurate detection of ventricular arrhythmias is essential to take appropriate therapeutic actions when cardiac arrhythmias occur. Furthermore, the accurate discrimination between arrhythmias is also important, provided that the required shocking therapy would not be the same. In this work, the main novelty is the use of the mathematical method known as Topological Data Analysis (TDA) to generate new types of features which can contribute to the improvement of the detection and classification performance of cardiac arrhythmias such as Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) and Ventricular Tachycardia (VT). The electrocardiographic (ECG) signals used for this evaluation were obtained from…

Location Optimisation in the Process of Designing Infrastructure of Point Pollutant Emitters to Meet Specific Environmental Protection Standards

2022

This article addresses the challenge of searching for the optimal location for a newly designed pollutant emitter (new factory or other facility) in relation to the requirements imposed by environmental protection regulations on the concentrations of selected pollutants in a given area, taking into account the currently existing levels of analysed substances. The paper presents the key issues of the dispersion of pollutants in atmospheric air and pollutant dispersion models. The Gaussian model of a plume, based on the Pasquill diffusion equation, is chosen to simulate the dispersion of pollutants in atmospheric air. The key issue within the paper constitutes the research section responsible…

Dual Stimuli-Responsive Polysaccharide Hydrogels Manufactured by Radiation Technique

2022

Featured Application Stimuli-responsive hydrogels encompassing biobased polymers are anticipated for utilization in various fields, starting from drug delivery systems through temporal actuators and water reservoirs to biodegradable microelements and nutrient delivery depots. This paper describes the results of the radiation-induced crosslinking of polysaccharides modified with hydroxypropyl and carboxymethyl functional groups, hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), respectively, without and with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) as a crosslinking agent, to obtain dual stimuli-responsive hydrogels. The gels were characterized in terms of water uptake and gel f…
