Biodegradable plastics for hygienic disposable products

2003

Disposable products satisfy many requirements that are difficult to achieve with long-life products, so we are obliged to use them even if they have a strong environmental impact. Furthermore it is interesting to note that large part of these products are made of plastic materials. This class of products can be redesigned with a smaller environmental impact using biodegradable polymer. The case study of a disposable product (a toothbrush for restaurants made of a starch based plastic) will be discussed as an application example

O niedomówieniach i nadinterpretacjach, czyli dziedzictwo kulinarne Śląska w kontekście Listy produktów tradycyjnych

2018

The issue in question is the culinary heritage of Silesia, represented in the List of traditional products of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (created in 2004). Basing on the example of wodzionka and other soups made of water and bread, the authors bring emphasis to some important issues associated with the description of selected traditional foods and kitchen products that lead to understatements and overinterpretations. The article proposes also a new definition of traditional dish, which takes into account two elements of a recipe (fixed and variable).

Considerations regarding the alleged association between Herbalife products and cases of hepatotoxicity: a rebuttal.

2014

We thank Dr. K Appelhans et al. for their comments [1] on our paper [2], published online first in April 2012. In our review, we aimed to draw the attention of physicians to the uncontrolled and increasingly alarming use of herbal products and dietary supplements in the general population. In fact, in Italy this phenomenon, though still limited, has rapidly increased over the last few years. Here, use of herbal medicine products has increased to 3.7 %, while in other countries consumption is higher, reaching 20 % in the UK, and 40 % in the USA. Young non-smoking women with a high level of education appear to be the most common consumers [3]. It seems that women use these products more than …

Loyal Employees. A Key Factor in the Success of a Company

2015

The most important asset of any business is its employees. Given this fact, normally, every business should have a solid plan to make sure that its employees are satisfied professionally and are loyal to the company. Unfortunately, this is usually not the case. Many companies believe that if they have an excellent product or service that generates high incomes and employees should be content. Generally, employers try to guarantee that its employees will not leave by offering them different benefits, trainings and great compensation. But is that enough to ensure loyalty among staff members? According to different statistics: each year the average company loses 20-50% of its employee base, re…

Receptor for advanced glycation end products is subjected to protein ectodomain shedding by metalloproteinases.

2008

The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is a 55-kDa type I membrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin superfamily. Ligand-induced up-regulation of RAGE is involved in various pathophysiological processes, including late diabetic complications and Alzheimer disease. Application of recombinant soluble RAGE has been shown to block RAGE-mediated pathophysiological conditions. After expression of full-length RAGE in HEK cells we identified a 48-kDa soluble RAGE form (sRAGE) in the culture medium. This variant of RAGE is smaller than a 51-kDa soluble version derived from alternative splicing. The release of sRAGE can be induced by the phorbol ester PMA and the calcium ionophore c…

Protection of islets in culture by delivery of oxygen binding neuroglobin via protein transduction.

2005

Islet transplantation has become an accepted method to treat type 1 diabetes. To succeed and achieve normal levels of glucose in transplant recipients, the quality of the transplanted islets is of the utmost importance. Lack of oxygen during organ procurement, islet isolation, and subsequent culture triggers apoptosis or necrosis and loss of islet function, causing the yield and quality to diminish. A promising candidate for cytoprotection against oxygen deprivation is neuroglobin (Ngb). Ngb is a recently described member of globin family and is expressed in neurons, retina, and pancreatic islets. To overexpress this protein in the islets and study its ability to protect them, we utilized p…

Stilistiskie izteiksmes līdzekļi pārtikas produktu reklāmas plakātos

2021
