Effects of alcohol-free beer on lipid profile and parameters of oxidative stress and inflammation in elderly women
2009
We assessed the influence of alcohol-free beer on factors implicated in atherosclerosis, such as lipid profile, oxidative stress parameters, and proinflammatory cytokines, in postmenopausal women, a population particularly at risk for atherosclerotic disease. The study was carried out in 29 nuns, 58 to 73 y old, who live in a convent with a disciplined, regular, and homogeneous lifestyle. The nuns maintained their habits and diet routine, but their meals were supplemented with 500 mL/d of alcohol-free beer (0.0%) divided into two doses over a 45-d period. Lipid profile, inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein, interleukins 1 and 6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and parameters of o…
Isoflavones and cardiovascular disease
2010
The specific profile of estrogens on cardiovascular risk, with limiting action on atherogenesis but a less clear protection on cardiovascular episodes, might be improved by other agonists of the estrogen receptor, such as isoflavones. By using a systematic search based on the electronic Medline database plus a hand-search of reference lists of selected review papers, we reviewed the rapidly growing body of experimental and clinical data that, on average, follow a pattern of benefit rather similar to estrogens. Experimental models have used endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells, isolated arteries, and live animals, including monkeys. The clinical evidence arises from studies on the li…

The impact of chocolate on cardiovascular health
2011
Cardiovascular disease is the leading determinant of mortality and morbidity in women. Functional foods are attracting interest as potential regulators of the susceptibility to disease. Supported by epidemiological evidence, chocolate has emerged as a possible modulator of cardiovascular risk. Chocolate, or cocoa as the natural source, contains flavanols, a subclass of flavonoids. The latter years have witnessed an increasing number of experimental and clinical studies that suggest a protective effect of chocolate against atherogenesis. Oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial function define three biological mechanisms that have shown sensitivity to chocolate. Moreover, the consumpt…
Identification of a novel mutation of MTP gene in a patient with abetalipoproteinemia.
2011
Abetalipoproteinemia (ABL), or Bassen-Kornzweig syndrome, is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of lipoprotein metabolism, characterized by fat malabsorption, hypocholesterolemia retinitis pigmentosa, progressive neuropathy and acanthocytosis from early infancy. We describe the clinical and molecular characterization of a 6-month-old infant born of consanguineous, apparently healthy parents from Iran. The patient was hospitalized because of failure to thrive, greasy stool and vomiting. The patient's serum lipid profile, the clinical phenotype and the duodenal histology suggested the clinical diagnosis of ABL. The MTP gene analysis by direct sequencing revealed a novel homozygous mutation (…
Common etiological pathways between toxic substance use, Internet and cybersex addiction: The role of expectancies and antisocial deviance proneness
2016
This study examined Internet and cybersex addiction in adolescents and how such behaviour was associated with substance use (in particular, cigarettes, alcohol, and drug use). Participants were 312 adolescents, aged 14-16, who completed survey instruments. Study measures included demographic, toxic substance use, expectancies toward substances consumption, antisocial deviance proneness, Internet, and cybersex addiction variables. Descriptive, bivariate analyses, exploratory/confirmatory factor analyses, and structural Equation Modeling were performed. Nearly 60%, 26%, and 25% of adolescents reported having drunk alcohol, used drugs and smoked cigarettes respectively. Prevalence of Internet …
Lipid profile of tenon's capsule in glaucoma patients
2009
International audience; Purpose: To provide data on the lipid profile of the Tenon’s capsule in Human glaucomatous eyes and to establish possible relationships with the short term outcome of filtration surgery. Methods: Fragments of Tenon’s capsule were collected during glaucoma surgery in patients suffering from open angle glaucoma (10 trabeculectomies and 17 non penetrating deep sclerectomies). The lipid profile of the human samples was determined by gas chromatography. A successful outcome after glaucoma surgery was defined by an intraocular pressure (IOP) ≤ 15 mmHg at 6 months without any IOP‐lowering agent. Results: We included 27 patients (12 males, 15 females) with a mean age of 65.5…
Impact of osteoporosis and vertebral fractures on quality-of-life. a population-based study in Valencia, Spain (The FRAVO Study)
2011
Abstract Background To describe the health related quality of life in a population sample of postmenopausal women over the age of 50 and resident in the city of Valencia (Spain), according to the presence/absence of osteoporosis and the severity of prevalent morphometric vertebral fractures. Methods A cross-sectional age-stratified population-based sample of 804 postmenopausal women of 50 years of age and older were assessed with the SF-12 questionnaire. Information about demographic features, lifestyle, clinical features, educational level, anti-osteoporotic and other treatments, comorbidities and risk factors for osteoporosis were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire …
Sex-Differences in the Pattern of Comorbidities, Functional Independence, and Mortality in Elderly Inpatients: Evidence from the RePoSI Register
2019
Background: The RePoSi study has provided data on comorbidities, polypharmacy, and sex dimorphism in hospitalised elderly patients. Methods: We retrospectively analysed data collected from the 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016 data sets of the RePoSi register. The aim of this study was to explore the sex-differences and to validate the multivariate model in the entire dataset with an expanded follow-up at 1 year. Results: Among 4714 patients, 51% were women and 49% were men. The disease distribution showed that diabetes, coronary artery disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, and malignancy were more frequent in men but that hypertension, anaemia, osteoarthritis, de…
Concordancia de las escalas REGICOR y SCORE para la identificación del riesgo cardiovascular alto en la población española
2007
Introduction. The aims of this study were to evaluate the consistency between the SCORE (Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation) and REGICOR (Registre Gironi del Cor) scales in identifying high cardiovascular risk and to describe the characteristics of those individuals for whom scale results were discrepant. Methods. This cross-sectional study involved 8942 subjects aged 40-65 years who had an indication for a complete lipid profile. The agreement between SCORE (for low-risk countries) and Framingham-REGICOR (with a high risk threshold of 10%) scales in classifying patients as high risk was evaluated using the kappa statistic. Subjects for whom there was a discrepancy between classifications …
