Direct Peel Monitoring of Xenobiotics in Fruit by Direct Analysis in Real Time Coupled to a Linear Quadrupole Ion Trap–Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer

2013

Study of xenobiotics present in fruit peel by exposing it (without any pretreatment) to direct analysis in real time coupled to a high-resolution orbitrap mass spectrometer (DART-HRMS) is reported for the first time. Variables such as DART gas heater temperature and pressure, source-to-MS distance, and sample velocity are investigated. The analysis of one sample by DART-MS lasts ca. 1 min, and the benefits of both high-resolution and tandem mass spectrometry to elucidate nontarget or unknown compounds are combined. Identification of postharvest fungicides, antioxidants, and sugars in fruit peel is performed in the positive ion mode. A possible elemental formula is suggested for marker compo…

gcType : a high-quality type strain genome database for microbial phylogenetic and functional research

2020

Abstract Taxonomic and functional research of microorganisms has increasingly relied upon genome-based data and methods. As the depository of the Global Catalogue of Microorganisms (GCM) 10K prokaryotic type strain sequencing project, Global Catalogue of Type Strain (gcType) has published 1049 type strain genomes sequenced by the GCM 10K project which are preserved in global culture collections with a valid published status. Additionally, the information provided through gcType includes >12 000 publicly available type strain genome sequences from GenBank incorporated using quality control criteria and standard data annotation pipelines to form a high-quality reference database. This …

MDA: a MATLAB-based program for morphospace-disparity analysis

2003

A MATLAB® program that examines patterns of state-space occupation is described. Four subroutines are available with which to visualize morphospace patterns: (i) in terms of their features such as dispersion, aggregation and location, thereby allowing users to extract complementary quantitative information about how the state-space is structured, and (ii) in terms of changes in those patterns that can be compared with other biotic (e.g., extinction, origination rates) or abiotic (e.g., environmental proxy) information. The program incorporates many of the latest and most widely used statistical parameters for describing multivariate spaces. The parameters are estimated on the basis of boots…

Scientific and Technical Contributions from Research Projects

2019

The main goal of this project is to demonstrate the advantages of sensor integration on a remotely controlled robotic platform for increasing operator safety and improving the classification of explosive targets. This is accomplished by combining the imaging provided by radars and an optoelectronic sensor, a time-of-flight (ToF) depth camera. An additional aim is to demonstrate the operability and practicality of the system in a field with landmine simulants having plastic cases.

OpenHVSR - Processing toolkit: Enhanced HVSR processing of distributed microtremor measurements and spatial variation of their informative content

2018

Abstract The investigation of seismic ambient noise (microtremor) in spectral ratio form, known as the Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio technique, is extremely popular nowadays both to investigate large areas in a reduced amount of time, and to leverage a wider choice of low cost equipment. In general, measurements at multiple locations are collected to generate multiple, individual spectral ratio curves. Recently, however, there has been an increasing interest in spatially correlating informative content from different locations. Accordingly, we introduce a new computer program, “OpenHVSR – Processing Toolkit”, developed in Matlab (R2015b), specifically engineered to enhance data proc…

Hierarchically nested factor model from multivariate data

2005

We show how to achieve a statistical description of the hierarchical structure of a multivariate data set. Specifically we show that the similarity matrix resulting from a hierarchical clustering procedure is the correlation matrix of a factor model, the hierarchically nested factor model. In this model, factors are mutually independent and hierarchically organized. Finally, we use a bootstrap based procedure to reduce the number of factors in the model with the aim of retaining only those factors significantly robust with respect to the statistical uncertainty due to the finite length of data records.

A Little Bird Told Me: Discovering KPIs from Twitter Data

2020

The goal of our research and experiments is to find the definitions and values of key performance indicators (KPIs) in unstructured text. The direct access to opinions of customers served as a motivating factor for us to choose Twitter data for our experiments. For our case study, we have chosen the restaurant business domain. As in the other business domains, KPIs often serve as a solution for identification of current problems. Therefore, it is essential to learn which criteria are important to restaurant guests. The mission of our Proof-of-Concept KPI discovery tool presented in this paper is to facilitate the explorative analysis taking Twitter user posts as a data source. After process…

A Selective Change Driven System for High-Speed Motion Analysis.

2016

Vision-based sensing algorithms are computationally-demanding tasks due to the large amount of data acquired and processed. Visual sensors deliver much information, even if data are redundant, and do not give any additional information. A Selective Change Driven (SCD) sensing system is based on a sensor that delivers, ordered by the magnitude of its change, only those pixels that have changed most since the last read-out. This allows the information stream to be adjusted to the computation capabilities. Following this strategy, a new SCD processing architecture for high-speed motion analysis, based on processing pixels instead of full frames, has been developed and implemented into a Field …

Toward fast and accurate emergency cases detection in BSNs

2020

International audience; In body sensor networks (BSNs), medical sensors capture physiological data from the human body and send them to the coordinator who act as a gateway to health care. The main aim of BSNs is to save peoples' lives. Therefore, fast and correct detection of emergencies while maintaining low-energy consumption of sensors is essential requirement of BSNs. In this study, the authors propose a new adaptive data sampling approach, where the sampling ratio is adapted based on the sensed data variation. The idea is to use the modified version of the cumulative sum (CUSUM) algorithm (modified CUSUM) that they previously proposed for wireless sensor networks to monitor the data v…
