Geometric Properties of Planar BV -Extension Domains
2009
We investigate geometric properties of those planar domains that are extension for functions with bounded variation. We start from a characterization of such domains given by Burago–Maz'ya and prove that a bounded, simply connected domain is a BV -extension domain if and only if its com- plement is quasiconvex. We further prove that the extension property is a bi-Lipschitz invariant and give applications to Sobolev extension domains.
A Note on Algebraic Sums of Subsets of the Real Line
2002
AbstractWe investigate the algebraic sums of sets for a large class of invari-ant ˙-ideals and ˙- elds of subsets of the real line. We give a simpleexample of two Borel subsets of the real line such that its algebraicsum is not a Borel set. Next we show a similar result to Proposition 2from A. Kharazishvili paper [4]. Our results are obtained for ideals withcoanalytical bases. 1 Introduction We shall work in ZFC set theory. By !we denote natural numbers. By 4wedenote the symmetric di erence of sets. The cardinality of a set Xwe denoteby jXj. By R we denote the real line and by Q we denote rational numbers. IfAand Bare subsets of R n and b2R , then A+B= fa+b: a2A^b2Bgand A+ b= A+ fbg. Simila…
Una generalizzazione del birapporto sopra un anello
1990
We generalize to the case of the projective line over a (not necessarily commutative) ring the well-know theorem on the bijective maps preserving a given cross-ratio.
Tree automata, tree decomposition and hyperedge replacement
2005
Recent results concerning efficient solvability of graph problems on graphs with bounded tree-width and decidability of graph properties for hyperedge-replacement graph grammars are systematised by showing how they can be derived from recognisability of corresponding tree classes by finite tree automata, using only well-known techniques from tree-automata theory.
(p,q)-summing sequences
2002
Abstract A sequence (x j ) in a Banach space X is (p,q) -summing if for any weakly q -summable sequence (x j ∗ ) in the dual space we get a p -summable sequence of scalars (x j ∗ (x j )) . We consider the spaces formed by these sequences, relating them to the theory of (p,q) -summing operators. We give a characterization of the case p=1 in terms of integral operators, and show how these spaces are relevant for a general question on Banach spaces and their duals, in connection with Grothendieck theorem.
Varieties of superalgebras of almost polynomial growth
2011
Abstract Let V gr be a variety of superalgebras and let c n gr ( V gr ) , n = 1 , 2 , … , be its sequence of graded codimensions. Such a sequence is polynomially bounded if and only if V gr does not contain a list of five superalgebras consisting of a commutative superalgebra, the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra and the algebra of 2 × 2 upper triangular matrices with trivial and natural Z 2 -gradings. In this paper we completely classify all subvarieties of the varieties generated by these five superalgebras, by giving a complete list of finite dimensional generating superalgebras.
Proper identities, Lie identities and exponential codimension growth
2008
Abstract The exponent exp ( A ) of a PI-algebra A in characteristic zero is an integer and measures the exponential rate of growth of the sequence of codimensions of A [A. Giambruno, M. Zaicev, On codimension growth of finitely generated associative algebras, Adv. Math. 140 (1998) 145–155; A. Giambruno, M. Zaicev, Exponential codimension growth of P.I. algebras: An exact estimate, Adv. Math. 142 (1999) 221–243]. In this paper we study the exponential rate of growth of the sequences of proper codimensions and Lie codimensions of an associative PI-algebra. We prove that the corresponding proper exponent exists for all PI-algebras, except for some algebras of exponent two strictly related to t…
Absolutely summing operators on C[0,1] as a tree space and the bounded approximation property
2010
Abstract Let X be a Banach space. For describing the space P ( C [ 0 , 1 ] , X ) of absolutely summing operators from C [ 0 , 1 ] to X in terms of the space X itself, we construct a tree space l 1 tree ( X ) on X. It consists of special trees in X which we call two-trunk trees. We prove that P ( C [ 0 , 1 ] , X ) is isometrically isomorphic to l 1 tree ( X ) . As an application, we characterize the bounded approximation property (BAP) and the weak BAP in terms of X ∗ -valued sequence spaces.
Conjunction and Disjunction Among Conditional Events
2017
We generalize, in the setting of coherence, the notions of conjunction and disjunction of two conditional events to the case of n conditional events. Given a prevision assessment on the conjunction of two conditional events, we study the set of coherent extensions for the probabilities of the two conditional events. Then, we introduce by a progressive procedure the notions of conjunction and disjunction for n conditional events. Moreover, by defining the negation of conjunction and of disjunction, we show that De Morgan’s Laws still hold. We also show that the associative and commutative properties are satisfied. Finally, we examine in detail the conjunction for a family \(\mathcal F\) of t…
Countably compact weakly Whyburn spaces
2015
The weak Whyburn property is a generalization of the classical sequential property that was studied by many authors. A space X is weakly Whyburn if for every non-closed set \({A \subset X}\) there is a subset \({B \subset A}\) such that \({\overline{B} \setminus A}\) is a singleton. We prove that every countably compact Urysohn space of cardinality smaller than the continuum is weakly Whyburn and show that, consistently, the Urysohn assumption is essential. We also give conditions for a (countably compact) weakly Whyburn space to be pseudoradial and construct a countably compact weakly Whyburn non-pseudoradial regular space, which solves a question asked by Angelo Bella in private communica…
