Terminoloģijas pārnese ar lietu tiesībām saistītu dokumentu tulkojumos no angļu valodas latviešu valodā

2017

Rezultāti norāda uz to, ka izvēlētie termini seko juridiskās ekvivalences principam, uzsverot kultūras u…

Perceived problems with collateral: The value of informal networking

2020

Abstract Many businesses in emerging economies are financially constrained due to their limited use of formal loans. Recent evidence suggests that negative perceptions discourage entrepreneurs from applying for loans. One of the main issues entrepreneurs mention is unattainable collateral requirements. In this paper, we contribute to this line of research by investigating the effect of networking with fellow entrepreneurs on perceived collateral problems. Drawing on quantitative and qualitative data originating from female entrepreneurs in Tanzania, we find that through networking, entrepreneurs are exposed to stories of their peers’ experiences with loans which influence their perceptions …

Patterns of Transnational Urban Drift to Latvia

2021

This chapter extends the previous knowledge on the effects of migrants’ transnational lifestyle by studying residential patterns and life preferences of Latvian return migrants and arriving foreigners. We aim to explore the geographies and narratives from interviews with migrants who had shifted to more dynamic and prosperous urban/suburban locations. The contribution sends forward the interplay between immigration and return migration experiences by questioning: (1) What are the migratory flows’ geographical contexts? (2) How do they overlap and illuminate the process of ‘urban drift’? (3) How do the ‘urban drifters’ value their current life preferences and migratory experiences? Using sec…

The Role of Public Entity in Coopetiotion and Convergence

2007

We investigate upon the strategic impact of the public entity to catalyze coalition formation among competitors around an essential facility. The public entity is usually represented as if moved by mere political scopes. However, the presence of a publicly-owned asset or infrastructure, which can be termed an essential facility, gives leeway to shed the opportunity to satisfy potentially new and different type of demand or consumer cluster needs. The increase in value stemming from a renewal in the utilization of the facility might loosen up political restraints against the involvement in the management of the facility of a multiplicity of actors. This allows us to add a new dimension to th…

Co‐parenting through subsidiaries: A model of value creation in the multinational firm

2017

Research summary We analyze a novel way to configure and manage multinational networks and propose a model of "co-parenting", characterized by the sharing of parenting roles and distribution of responsibilities between two units. We develop our argument around the notion of the springboard subsidiary, an operating subsidiary which assumes headquarters’ functions since it shares greater institutional closeness with both the headquarters’ country as well as with the host region. Based upon qualitative data, our inductive model revolves around three stages: establishment, consolidation and maturity, each of which reflects distinct roles and loci of decision making among the three actors involv…

Piero Sraffa's lectures on the advanced theory of value 1928–31 and the rediscovery of the classical approach

2005

Abstract Sraffa's Lectures on the Advanced Theory of Value 1928–1931 and his two preparatory Notes of summer and November 1927 provide a wealth of material, up to now unpublished, for a reconstruction of the early stage of his inquiry into the cognate fields of pure economic theory and its history. The three manuscripts show that in the late 1920s Sraffa rejected the Marshallian constant-cost interpretation of classical economics, an interpretation to which he had adhered in his 1925 and 1926 papers. Moreover, in the Lectures, Sraffa presents for the first time his own interpretation of classical economics based on the concepts of surplus, physical real costs and asymmetric treatment of dis…

Spectral scattering dependencies of controllable PLZT occluder for vision science applications

2001

Summary form only given. PLZT ceramics have an unique property - a facility to change the light scattering efficiency with the applied electric field. This effect is well manifested especially in the visible, just where the transparency windows of PLZT begins. Formerly we developed eye occlusion devices for vision science applications to introduce a dynamic decrease of the image contrast in stereovision tests. In future we plan to construct, using controllable scattering in PLZT, an eye simulator to study cataract caused retinal image quality reduction. The present work reports on spectral dependencies of such an eye occluder studied with the double optical integrated sphere technique.

Symmetry in Computer Vision

2002

Symmetry properties establish the invariance of a system to a given set of transformations. Physicists assign special meaning whenever symmetry is broken in nature; for example, groups of symmetry have been used to explain and predict the spatial organization of atoms in a crystal. Psychologists consider relevant the property of symmetry in the perception of visual signals. The paper will briefly describe different approaches, introduced in computer vision, to measure symmetry. A review of some applications at the Computer Vision Group (Department of Mathematics and Applications of Palermo University) is presented. They regard attentive visual processing, the analysis of faces, the recognit…

Perceptual uncertainty is a property of the cognitive system

2012

AbstractWe qualify Frost's proposals regarding letter-position coding in visual word recognition and the universal model of reading. First, we show that perceptual uncertainty regarding letter position is not tied to European languages – instead it is a general property of the cognitive system. Second, we argue that a universal model of reading should incorporate a developmental view of the reading process.

Oxygenation Status of Rhabdomyosarcoma Spheroids with Different Stages of Differentiation

1994

Multicellular tumor spheroids with regional heterogeneities of proliferation and substrate concentrations have been investigated recently to study the biological properties of small tumor nodules prior to onset of vascularization (for reviews see: Mueller-Klieser, 1987; Sutherland, 1988).
