Properties and interactions – melting point of tribromobenzene isomers
2021
The melting points of tribromobenzene isomers are correlated with the number, nature and distribution of intermolecular interactions in their structures.
Tailor‐Made Amino Acids and Fluorinated Motifs as Prominent Traits in Modern Pharmaceuticals
2020
Structural analysis of modern pharmaceutical practices allows for the identification of two rapidly growing trends: the introduction of tailor-made amino acids and the exploitation of fluorinated motifs. Curiously, the former represents one of the most ubiquitous classes of naturally occurring compounds, whereas the latter is the most xenobiotic and comprised virtually entirely of man-made derivatives. Herein, 39 selected compounds, featuring both of these traits in the same molecule, are profiled. The total synthesis, source of the corresponding amino acids and fluorinated residues, and medicinal chemistry aspects and biological properties of the molecules are discussed.
Dynamics of supramolecular associative polymer networks at the interplay of chain entanglement, transient chain association, and chain‐sticker cluste…
2019
The dynamic mechanical properties of supramolecular associative polymer networks depend on the average number of entanglements along the network‐forming chains, Nₑ, and on their content of associative groups, f. In addition, there may be further influence by aggregation of the associative groups into clusters, which, in turn, is influenced by the chemical structure of these groups, and again by Nₑ and f of the polymer. Therefore, the effects of these parameters are interdependent. To conceptually understand this interdependency, we study model networks in which (a) Nₑ, (b) f, and (c) the chemical structure of the associative groups are varied systematically. Each network is probed by rheolo…
Immobilization of enzymes by multilayer microcapsules
1994
A method is described to obtain a new type of microcapsules for immobilization of enzymes or living cells. The wall of these capsules consists of several layers of poly(ethyleneimine) and poly(acrylic acid). The idea is that diverging properties of the whole assembly can be better controlled when the membrane is built up by several consecutive steps, each being optimized with respect to a special property, for example, permeability or mechanical strength. The encapsulation of acidic phosphatase and the cleavage of p-nitrophenyl phosphate was used as a model system. The charged capsules were characterized by their enzymatic activity, as a function of membrane composition (number and sequence…

Sir Thomas More's Utopia : An overlooked economic classic
2019
Sir Thomas More's Utopia, published in 1516, is a classic work of how to organise a society based on common property. With a unique mix of common property, institutions and sound economic insights, we argue that More built a framework for a society that could be viable in the long run. While the conditions that make Utopia work are quite restrictive, it does provide a sketch of a society where common property may not stifle long‐term development, but is associated with productive workers and people content with their lives. peerReviewed
2017
The progress of the commons as main subject in social sciences and in public debate has caused a new focus on the genealogy of proprietorship and his ideology. Framing this ideology, for a long time individual proprietorship has been represented as opposite to discourses that justified collective resource management. However, looking at the past of juridical systems, it is possible to highlight several links between individual property rights and collective rights. In particular historical analysis reveals that the main conceptual tool for producing both individual and collective ownership consists in instituting the goods as «objects». Both individual ownership and common goods are the eff…
L’espropriazione nella Repubblica Popolare di Polonia negli anni 1944–1956. Analisi storica e dottrinale
2018
The Manifesto of the Polish Committee of National Liberation (an organization created by the Soviet Union) of 22 July 1944 initiated on the territory of Poland radical changes in the political and social-economic organization of the country. The self-appointed communist authorities, at the beginning of the new system’s development, as one of the key challenges recognized the necessity for transformation of the ownership structure of Poland in accordance with the doctrine they propagate. The first decrees already expressed a disregard for the achievements of Western civilization in the area of protection of acquired rights, including in the context of individual property rights. In the force…
