Design and evaluation of prosody-based non-speech audio feedback for physical training application
2011
Abstract Methodological support for the design of non-speech user interface sounds for human–computer interaction is still fairly scarce. To meet this challenge, this paper presents a sound design case which, as a practical design solution for a wrist-computer physical training application, outlines a prosody-based method for designing non-speech user interface sounds. The principles used in the design are based on nonverbal communicative functions of prosody in speech acts, exemplifying an interpersonal approach to sonic interaction design. The stages of the design process are justified with a theoretical analysis and three empirical sub-studies, which comprise production and recognition t…
ANALISI PROSODICO DELL’ITALIANO PARLATO PER SPAGNOLI: IL CASO DELLE INTERROGATIVE POLARI
2011
[EN] In this work we propose to present the prosodic features characteristic of the interrogatives yes/no of the spanish who learned italian as a foreign language. The two varieties considered for evaluation are the Italian variety of Venice, Madrid and the Spanish variety. Both have already been studied in the past, however, as far as I know, this is the first study that systematically puts compared in a comprehensive way. This description of the transfer is strongest fundamental in education for the teachers involved in teaching Italian as a foreign language are aware of the fact that the L1 prosodic features are very strong and difficult subject to conscious control of the speaker. In th…
Evidentials, politeness and prosody in Spanish: A corpus analysis
2014
This paper analyzes three Spanish particles, namely al parecer, por lo visto and según parece, whose status as pure evidentials (i.e., elements that only convey"source of information") has been put into question. The aim of this study is twofold: firstly, to observe the incidence of prosody in triggering the contextual meanings usually expressed by evidentials, i.e., politeness, impoliteness and self-image activities; secondly, to find out whether their prosodic behaviour provides any hint of their core meaning being"source of information". In order to carry out this analysis, a corpus of circa three million words of Peninsular Spanish has been compiled, which aims to reflect a variety of r…
Temporal features of imagined locomotion in normal aging.
2010
Motor imagery is the ability to mentally simulate a movement without executing it. Previous investigations have reported a deterioration of this ability during complex arm movements in aged adults. In the present study, we aimed to extend these findings by investigating the temporal features of imagined precision gait in healthy elderly adults. Locomotion is a unique example of imagined movement because it involves simulated full-body movement and the concurrent updating of environmental spatial information. Nine young and nine older adults actually or mentally walked (walking distance: 5m) along three paths having different widths (15cm, 25cm, and 50cm). The narrowest path required balance…
School choice criteria and school segregation in the city of Valencia
2022

The scientific and practical fields-especially high-performance sports-increasingly request a stronger focus be placed on individual athletes in human movement science research. Machine learning methods have shown efficacy in this context by identifying the unique movement patterns of individuals and distinguishing their intra-individual changes over time. The objective of this investigation is to analyze biomechanically described movement patterns during the fatigue-related accumulation process within a single training session of a high number of repeated executions of a ballistic sports movement-specifically, the frontal foot kick (mae-geri) in karate-in expert athletes. The two leading r…
Contributions regarding 3D modelling of biomechanics of the foot
2021
Within this paper, a detailed study is elaborated regarding the human foot during both orthostatic and gait, the main goal being to develop 3D models which are very useful in the foot motion and loading state research. In order to elaborate the accurate 3D modelling of the human foot assembly, a thorough biomechanical study is done. Such a study was required due to the fact of the high anatomical complexity of the motions within the foot, taking into consideration the 26 bones and 33 joints consisting it. The research aims the CAD modelling of the biomechanics of the healthy subjects alongside with predisposed pathological conditions. The resulting models will have important utility in both…

“Accent issue”: foreign accent syndrome following ischemic stroke
2019
Background: Foreign accent syndrome (FAS) is arare syndrome associated with altered speech rhythm and prosody, which listeners perceive as foreign; cerebrovascular accidents, tumors and multiple sclerosis are reported as possible causes of FAS. The pathophysiology of FAS is not yet understood. Case presentation: A 68-year-old Italian man was admitted to the EmergencyDepartment for non-fluent aphasia and dysarthria. Computed tomography (CT) scan did not show abnormalities; the patient was treated with systemic thrombolysis. A repeated brain CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed an infarct in the left primary motor cortex and mild extension to cortico-subcortical frontal regions. …
Korpusavusteinen diskurssintutkimus (CADS): analyysiesimerkki homouden ja heterouden digitaalisista diskursseista
2018
The article aims at combining two methodological approaches, namely corpus linguistics and discourse studies. Both of these approaches are present in corpus-assisted discourse studies (CADS) which makes use of both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. First, an attempt is made to discuss the differences and similarities of these two traditions based on Leech’s (2000) listing. However, it turns out that this listing does not include all necessary viewpoints, and those are further discussed. In the empirical section of the paper, the Suomi24 corpus is analysed in order to provide an example of CADS. The analysis was carried out through collocation and discourse prosody analyses. The re…
