Associations between air pollution and pediatric eczema, rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma: A meta-analysis of European birth cohorts

2020

Background: Uncertainly continues to exist regarding the role of air pollution on pediatric asthma and allergic conditions, especially as air pollution levels have started to decrease in recent decades. Objective: We examined associations of long-term air pollution levels at the home address with pediatric eczema, rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma prevalences in five birth cohorts (BIB, EDEN, GASPII, RHEA and INMA) from seven areas in five European countries. Methods: Current eczema, rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma were assessed in children aged four (N = 6527) and eight years (N = 2489). A multi-morbidity outcome (≥2 conditions versus none) was also defined. Individual outdoor levels of nitrog…

Diving below the spin-down limit: Constraints on gravitational waves from the energetic young pulsar PSR J0537-6910

2021

We present a search for continuous gravitational-wave signals from the young, energetic X-ray pulsar PSR J0537-6910 using data from the second and third observing runs of LIGO and Virgo. The search is enabled by a contemporaneous timing ephemeris obtained using NICER data. The NICER ephemeris has also been extended through 2020 October and includes three new glitches. PSR J0537-6910 has the largest spin-down luminosity of any pulsar and is highly active with regards to glitches. Analyses of its long-term and inter-glitch braking indices provided intriguing evidence that its spin-down energy budget may include gravitational-wave emission from a time-varying mass quadrupole moment. Its 62 Hz …

The SCOPE of definitive chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced esophageal cancer: what direction for the future?

2016

Exclusive chemoradiotherapy (CRT) delivering 50 Gy over 5 weeks with cisplatin and fluorouracil-based chemotherapy is a cornerstone in locally advanced esophageal cancer or non-operable patients since the results of the pivotal study of US Intergroup RTOG-8501 (1). This trial has successfully demonstrated that some patients with esophageal carcinoma may be long-term survivors so that this treatment is now definitely accepted as curative (2). Nevertheless the prognosis is still very disappointing with a 5-year overall survival rate of approximately 25%. Attempts to improve overall survival by escalating the dose of radiotherapy with concurrent cisplatin and fluorouracil has been assessed in …

Staļiniskās ideoloģijas izpausmes latviešu daiļliteratūrā: atspoguļojums Latvijas PSR presē no 1945.-1956.gadam

2021

Lindas Neimanes bakalaura darbs “Staļiniskās ideoloģijas izpausmes latviešu daiļliteratūrā: atspoguļojums Latvijas PSR presē no 1945.-1956.gadam” izstrādāts Latvijas Universitātes Vēstures un filozofijas fakultātē. Bakalaura darbs sastāv no ievada, avotu un literatūras apskata, piecām nodaļām, divām apakšnodaļām, secinājumiem, izmantotās literatūras un avotu saraksta. Pētījuma aktualitāte ir noskaidrot, kādi bija staļiniskās ideoloģijas principi, ko tas sevī ietvēra. Prese bija viens no mehānismiem, kas mēģināja ietekmēt literatūru, pamācīt literātus, nosakot, kādiem ir jābūt viņu darbiem. Secinājums: Daiļliteratūras darbi no 1945.- 1956. gadam bija ļoti vienveidīgi, kuros tika attēlota pad…

2020

In 2020 for the first time a PhD history students’ session was organised as part of the 78th Annual International Conference of the University of Latvia. 8 doctoral students applied for participation under the overall session title “The Unknown Pages in the History of Latvia and the Region: Opportunities”. The reports cover various social aspects in the history of Latvia and the Region, the role of women and individuals in historical processes and economic history, the operation of international abstinence organizations, the participation of Latvian volunteers in the Spanish Civil War and the language issues in television broadcasts in the Latvian SSR. This volume contains the abstracts of …

Respiratory support in patients with severe COVID-19 in the International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infection (ISARIC) COVID-19 study: a …

2022

Invasive mechanical ventilation; COVID-19; Critical care Ventilación mecánica invasiva; COVID-19; Cuidado crítico Ventilació mecànica invasiva; COVID-19; Atenció crítica Background Up to 30% of hospitalised patients with COVID-19 require advanced respiratory support, including high-flow nasal cannulas (HFNC), non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIV), or invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, outcomes and risk factors for failing non-invasive respiratory support in patients treated with severe COVID-19 during the first two years of the pandemic in high-income countries (HICs) and low middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods This is a multin…

Pulsating in Unison at Optical and X-Ray Energies: Simultaneous High Time Resolution Observations of the Transitional Millisecond Pulsar PSR J1023+00…

2019

PSR J1023+0038 is the first millisecond pulsar discovered to pulsate in the visible band; such a detection took place when the pulsar was surrounded by an accretion disk and also showed X-ray pulsations. We report on the first high time resolution observational campaign of this transitional pulsar in the disk state, using simultaneous observations in the optical (TNG, NOT, TJO), X-ray (XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, NICER), infrared (GTC) and UV (Swift) bands. Optical and X-ray pulsations were detected simultaneously in the X-ray high intensity mode in which the source spends $\sim$ 70% of the time, and both disappeared in the low mode, indicating a common underlying physical mechanism. In addition, o…

Effective Management of Severe Asthma with Biologic Medications in Adult Patients: A Literature Review and International Expert Opinion

2021

International audience; Severe asthma often remains uncontrolled despite effective treatments and evidence-based guidelines. A group of global experts in asthma and biologic medications from nine countries considered the most relevant clinical variables to manage severe asthma in adult patients and guide treatment choice. The resulting recommendations address the investigation of biomarker levels (blood eosinophil count along with fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide [FeNO]), clinical features (oral corticosteroid [OCS] dependency, specific comorbid disease entities associated with severe type 2 asthma), and safety considerations. Current evidence suggests that biomarkers, inclu…

Integrated care pathways for airway diseases (AIRWAYS-ICPs)

2014

International audience; The objective of Integrated Care Pathways for Airway Diseases (AIRWAYS-ICPs) is to launch a collaboration to develop multi-sectoral care pathways for chronic respiratory diseases in European countries and regions. AIRWAYS-ICPs has strategic relevance to the European Union Health Strategy and will add value to existing public health knowledge by: 1) proposing a common framework of care pathways for chronic respiratory diseases, which will facilitate comparability and trans-national initiatives; 2) informing cost-effective policy development, strengthening in particular those on smoking and environmental exposure; 3) aiding risk stratification in chronic disease patien…
