Encapsulation of Alcohol Dehydrogenase in Mannitol by Spray Drying

2014

The retention of the enzyme activity of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) has been studied in various drying processes such as spray drying. The aim of this study is to encapsulate ADH in mannitol, either with or without additive in order to limit the thermal denaturation of the enzyme during the drying process. The retention of ADH activity was investigated at different drying temperatures. When mannitol was used, the encapsulated ADH was found inactive in all the dried powders. This is presumably due to the quick crystallization of mannitol during spray drying that resulted in the impairment of enzyme protection ability in comparison to its amorphous form. Maltodextin (dextrose equivalent = 11)…

Advanced endoscopic imaging for gastric cancer assessment: new insights with new optics?

2014

The most immediate strategy for improving survival of gastric cancer patients is secondary prevention through diagnosis of early gastric cancer either through screening or follow-up of individuals at high risk. Endoscopy examination is therefore of paramount importance and two general steps are to be known in assessing gastric mucosa - detection and characterization. Over the past decade, the advent of advanced endoscopic imaging technology led to diverse descriptions of these modalities reporting them to be useful in this setting. In this review, we aim at summarizing the current evidence on the use of advance imaging in individuals at high-risk (i.e., advance stages of gastric atrophy/int…

Structure of matrices based on pectin : formulation, characterization, functionality and controlled release during the encapsulation

2016

In this thesis, we studied the interactions between an anionic polysaccharide (pectin) and monovalent cation (Na+) and divalent cations (Ca2+, Zn2+, Ba2+, Mg2+) in dilute regime (c Ca2+ > Zn2+ > Mg2+; this may be related to the affinity between the water molecules from the coordination sphere and the cation. Indeed, the affinity of the cation for water molecules increases in the reverse order: Ba2+ < Ca2+ < Zn2+ < Mg2+. Finally, we have used the three polysaccharides (PGA, LMP and ALMP - amidated low methoxyl pectin) in association with calcium ions to produce microparticles containing rutin to target drug release in the intestine. We have linked the rutin release kinetics to the network st…

Three New Species of the Bothriomirine Genus Leprocapsus Poppius from Indonesia (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae: Cylapinae)

2012

Abstract Three new species of the genus Leprocapsus Poppius from Indonesia, L. irianjayensis n. sp. and L. parvus n. sp. (Irian Jaya), and L. schuhi n. sp. (Sulawesi), are described. A color photograph of the adult and illustration of the antennal segments I and II of each treated taxa, dorsal habitus drawing of L. schuhi, illustration of the male genitalia of L. parvus, and scanning electron micrographs of selected structures of L. irianjayensis, L. schuhi, and L. scutellaris are provided. A key to all known species, diagnosis and the distribution map of the genus Leprocapsus are given.

From In Silico to Experimental Validation: Tailoring Peptide Substrates for a Serine Protease.

2020

Smart nanocarriers for the transport of drugs to tumor cells are nowadays of great interest for treating cancer. The use of enzymatic stimuli to cleave peptide-based drug nanocapsules for the selective release of nanocapsule cargo in close proximity to tumor cells opens new possibilities in cancer research. In the present work, we demonstrate a methodology for finding and optimizing cleavable substrate sequences by the type II transmembrane serine protease hepsin, which is highly overexpressed in prostate cancer. The design and screening of combinatorial libraries in silico against the binding cavity of hepsin allow the identification of a panel of promising substrates with high-calculated …

Biowaiver Monographs for Immediate-Release Solid Oral Dosage Forms: Nifedipine

2015

Literature data relevant to the biopharmaceutical properties of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) nifedipine are reviewed to evaluate whether a waiver of in vivo bioequivalence (BE) testing of immediate-release (IR) dosage forms formulated as tablets and soft gelatin capsules is warranted. Nifedipine's solubility and permeability, its therapeutic use and index, pharmacokinetics, food drug interactions, and any reported BE/bioavailability problems were all taken into consideration. Solubility and BA data indicate conclusively that nifedipine is a class II substance of biopharmaceutics classification system (BCS) and that the formulation of drug product plays a key role on the dissol…

Nanocarriers for optimizing the balance between interfollicular permeation and follicular uptake of topically applied clobetasol to minimize adverse …

2015

The treatment of various hair disorders has become a central focus of good dermatologic patient care as it affects men and women all over the world. For many inflammatory-based scalp diseases, glucocorticoids are an essential part of treatment, even though they are known to cause systemic as well as local adverse effects when applied topically. Therefore, efficient targeting and avoidance of these side effects are of utmost importance. Optimizing the balance between drug release, interfollicular permeation, and follicular uptake may allow minimizing these adverse events and simultaneously improve drug delivery, given that one succeeds in targeting a sustained release formulation to the hair…

Statistical tools and control of internal lubricant content of inhalation grade HPMC capsules during manufacture

2016

The internal lubricant content (ILC) of inhalation grade HPMC capsules is a key factor to ensure good powder release when the patient inhales a medicine from a dry powder inhaler (DPI). Powder release from capsules has been shown to be influenced by the ILC. The characteristics used to measure this are the emitted dose, fine particle fraction and mass median aerodynamic diameter. In addition the ILC level is critical for capsule shell manufacture because it is an essential part of the process that cannot work without it. An experiment has been applied to the manufacture of inhalation capsules with the required ILC. A full factorial model was used to identify the controlling factors and from…

Toddlers' Play in Early Childhood Education Settings

2018

More and more toddlers participate in early childhood education outside home, sharing a significant part of their day with teachers and peers, often in play. Despite the knowledge that has accumulated on toddlers’ playing skills and on the psychology underlying the development of play, research on toddlers’ play from the educational and pedagogical viewpoints is limited. Whereas teachers of toddlers report high respect for play and the importance of play in toddlers’ lives, research shows that the position of play is generally weak. This chapter, drawing on existing research, reviews the development and characteristics of toddlers’ play, describes the ways in which they play, and discusses …
