‘Cos I’m a Survivor’ : Narratives of coping and resilience in recollections of difficult childhood in post-war Finland
2018
In post-war Finland thousands of children experienced poor upbringing, neglect and abuse, and had to deal with their experiences without social support from adults. In this article we study how difficult and bitter experiences related to childhood crises are remembered, reinterpreted and reframed in later life and in contemporary Finland. As research material we use both oral and written reminiscences of childhood in the post-war years collected in the period 2014–2016. We argue that in the recollections of difficult childhood coping and resilience emerge as major narrative themes. Although informants in their childhood were forced to suffer in silence, they remember themselves as being res…
Muistojen sukupolvisuhteet : merkitykselliset aikuiset lapsuudessa
2007
Yhteiskunnallisten muutosten myötä myös sukupolvien välisen kanssakäymisen on arvioitu Suomessa vähentyneen. Ajankohtaisena huolenaiheena on pidetty lasten aikuiskontaktien niukkuutta. Aihetta on melko vähän varsinkin suomalaisessa yhteydessä tutkittu. Omien tutkimusintressiemme ohella teimme laadullisen tutkimuksemme Jyväskylässä vuosina 2002-2004 toimineen Sukupolvet verkoksi -hankkeen tarpeisiin. Hankkeen kautta saimme 12 1930-1980-luvuilla syntynyt…
Mielisairaalan varjoista : nostalgia ja melankolia mielisairaala-alueilla asuneiden lapsuusmuistoissa
2018
1940–1960-luvuilla suomalaisten mielisairaaloiden henkilökunta perheineen asui tyypillisesti sairaala-alueilla tarkoitusta varten rakennetuissa asunnoissa.

Background Contractile myofibroblasts (MFs) accumulate in the joint capsules of patients suffering from posttraumatic joint stiffness. MF activation is controlled by a complex local network of growth factors and cytokines, ending in the increased production of extracellular matrix components followed by soft tissue contracture. Despite the tremendous growth of knowledge in this field, inconsistencies remain in practice and prevention.

Effects of losartan and atorvastatin on the development of early posttraumatic joint stiffness in a rat model

2019
Background After a trauma, exuberant tissue healing with fibrosis of the joint capsule can lead to posttraumatic joint stiffness (PTJS). Losartan and atorvastatin have both shown their antifibrotic effects in different organ systems. Objective The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the influence of losartan and atorvastatin on the early development of joint contracture. In addition to joint angles, the change in myofibroblast numbers and the distribution of bone sialoprotein (BSP) were assessed. Study design and methods In this randomized and blinded experimental study with 24 rats, losartan and atorvastatin were compared to a placebo. After an initial joint injury, rat knees were …
Influence of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-4 on human joint capsule myofibroblasts
2016
Post-traumatic joint contracture was reported to be associated with elevated numbers of contractile myofibroblasts (MFs) in the healing capsule. During the physiological healing process, the number of MFs declines; however, in fibroconnective disorders, MFs persist. The manifold interaction of the cytokines regulating the appearance and persistence of MFs in the pathogenesis of joint contracture remains to be elucidated. The objective of our current study was to analyze the impact of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-4 on functional behavior of MFs. Cells were isolated from human joint capsule specimens and challenged with three different concentrations of IL-4 with or without…
Möglichkeiten der CT-Arthrographie in der Diagnostik von Schulterinstabilitäten
1990
In the course of a prospective study, CT arthrography was carried out on 40 patients with shoulder instability. In 35 of these patients a lesion of the capsule and labrum was demonstrated, indicating glenohumeral instability; in three patients this was shown primarily by CT arthrography. In three patients, multidirectional instability was demonstrated. In four patients there was an isolated lesion of the labrum, whereas in one patient all the findings were normal. Compared with the capsulo-labral lesions, bone changes involving the head of the humerus and the glenoid were of lesser importance, although their severity affected the choice of operative treatment in four patients. Fifteen of th…
MR-Tomographie versus CT-Arthrographie bei glenohumeralen Instabilitäten
1992
In a prospective study the diagnostic value of MRI compared to CT arthrography (CT-A) was evaluated in 26 patients with 27 instable shoulder joints. Surgical and/or arthroscopic correlation was available in all cases. Both methods showed a high accuracy (96% CT-A, 94% MRI) in the evaluation of the glenoid labrum. CT-A was significantly superior to MRI in the detection of capsular lesions (sensitivity 96% vs. 44%, accuracy 96% vs. 72%, negative predictive value 96% vs. 67%). CT-A and MRI results regarding humeral head fractures were similar; fractures of the glenoid rim were better detected by CT-A, the difference, however, was statistically not significant. Overall, CT-A proved to be superi…
