Intraoperative measurement of parathyroid hormone: A Copernican revolution in the surgical treatment of hyperparathyroidism

2016

Intraoperative parathyroid hormone (PTH) monitoring in the setting of the operating room represents a valuable example of the rationale use of the laboratory diagnostic in a patient-oriented approach. Rapid intraoperative PTH (ioPTH) assay is a valid tool for an accurate evaluation of the success of parathyroid surgery. The reliability of the user-friendly portable systems as well as the collaboration between operators and surgical staff allow the one-site monitoring of the ioPTH decrements on the course of the surgical management of hyperparathyroidism. The rapid answer provided by an effective decrement of PTH during parathyroidectomy contributes dramatically to the efficacy of parathyroi…

Evolution of the complex permittivity of biological tissue at microwaves ranges: Correlation study with burn depth

2014

The evolution of the muscle tissue's complex permittivity represents a growing interest in terms of characterization in medicine and biology. The influence of a burned part on the permittivity is not very developed. In this work, an estimation of the complex permittivity of biological tissues is performed as a function of the depth of burn tissues. The sensor, an open-ended coaxial probe, is placed directly against each sample. The evolution of the complex permittivity is studied for two measurements conditions (in the air and in a physiological solution). A correlation study is attempted with the depth of burn tissue.

Survival of two strains of Phthorimaea operculella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) reared on transgenic potatoes expressing a Bacillus thuringiensis cryst…

1998

Measurement of the atmospheric muon flux with a 4 GeV threshold in the ANTARES neutrino telescope

2010

A new method for the measurement of the muon flux in the deep-sea ANTARES neutrino telescope and its dependence on the depth is presented. The method is based on the observation of coincidence signals in adjacent storeys of the detector. This yields an energy threshold of about 4 GeV. The main sources of optical background are the decay of 40K and the bioluminescence in the sea water. The 40K background is used to calibrate the efficiency of the photo-multiplier tubes.

Quantitative subsurface defect detection in composite materials using a non-contact ultrasonic system

2002

The results of an experimental study conducted to detect subsurface defects in a thick Gr/PPS composite test sample using a noncontact ultrasonic system are presented. Surface waves are generated by a pulsed laser and detected by an air-coupled capacitance transducer. By controlling the surface wave wavelength through a shadow mask, it is possible to control surface wave penetration depth in the sample. Surface wave peak-to-peak amplitude is related to the near-surface material condition. Results indicate that signal amplitude decreases as the width of the defect increases and an approximately linear relation can be deduced.

Fe K α and Fe K β line detection in the NuSTAR spectrum of the ultra-bright Z source Scorpius X-1

2021

Context.Low-mass X-ray binaries hosting a low-magnetised neutron star, which accretes matter via Roche-lobe overflow, are generally grouped into two classes called Atoll and Z sources after the path described in their X-ray colour-colour diagrams. Scorpius X–1 is the brightest persistent low-mass X-ray binary known so far, and it is the prototype of the Z sources.Aims.We analysed the firstNuSTARobservation of this source to study its spectral emission, exploiting the high-statistics data collected by this satellite. The colour-colour diagram shows that the source was probably observed during the lower normal and flaring branches of its Z track. We separated the data from the two branches in…

Disappearance of Hard X-Ray Emission in the Last BeppoSAX Observation of the Z Source GX 349+2

2003

We report on the results from two BeppoSAX observations of the Z source GX 349+2 performed in February 2001 and covering the broad energy range 0.12-200 keV. The light curve obtained from these observations shows a large flaring activity, the count rate varying from ~130 to ~260 counts/s, indicating that the source was in the flaring branch during these observations. The average spectrum is well described by a soft blackbody and a Comptonized component. To well fit the energy spectrum three gaussian lines are needed at 1.2 keV, 2.6 keV, and 6.7 keV with corresponding equivalent widths of 13 eV, 10 eV, and 39 eV, probably associated to L-shell emission of Fe XXIV, Ly-alpha S XVI, and Fe XXV,…
